Book excerpt: This qualitative collective case study aimed to explore that attitudes and perceptions of alumni engagement at a private women’s college in the Southeastern United States. A total of thirteen alumni from one of two generational cohorts: baby boomers or millennials, were interviewed and six participated in two focus group sessions. Interviews and focus groups sessions were transcribed and coded for emerging themes. Questions for the interviews and focus groups were directly related to the study’s five research questions: (1) What are the personal and situational characteristics of alumni by giving level to the alma mater?, (2) What is the relationship between student involvement and subsequent alumni engagement?, (3) What are the attitude and perceptions of alumni towards annual giving to the alma mater?, (4) What are the general attitudes toward charitable giving of alumni?, and (5) What is the relationship between graduation recency and alumni engagement? Analysis of the data revealed that overall participants’ attitudes and perceptions of alumni engagement at their alma mater were extremely positive in nature. Alumni had strong feelings regarding giving back to the alma mater both financially and otherwise to help ensure that current and future students could continue to have the same experience. There were six themes which emerged as a result of this study.

Book excerpt: This research explores how frequent communication and emotional closeness, as fostered by the use of social network sites (SNSs) such as Facebook, influence alumni attitudes and behavior toward volunteering for and making charitable gifts to their alma mater. Research was conducted at a large Northeastern University. First, an exploratory study of interviews and participant observation was conducted in order to better understand how and why alumni currently use Facebook. This was followed by the collection of survey data from 3,085 University alumni. The data were analyzed using hierarchical linear regression, which revealed several significant findings. First, active participation in alumni groups on Facebook positively predicts strong social network ties to other alumni and the University along two dimensions: frequency of communication and emotional closeness. Second, these strong ties have an effect on alumni's attitude and actual behavior toward volunteering for and making charitable donations to the University.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the Alumni Attitudes Study was to determine the influence of measured variables on alumni attitudes and perception toward Auburn University and the Auburn Alumni Association. The sample population consisted of 2,284 university alumni who responded to a branded survey sent to alumni selected from the Auburn University alumni database. Based on the outcomes of this study, a conceptual model can be developed to better predict the supportive behaviors of alumni. Data was analyzed to establish statistically significant relationships between measured variables that influence those supportive behaviors of alumni. The findings involving this data can aid Auburn University and other institutions of higher education in identifying supportive alumni during with ever decreasing resources. The key to analyzing the findings of this study is to identify factors that influence alumni, then creating effective marketing strategies that target segments of alumni who are most likely to give to their alma mater.
