Book A Survey of Measurements and Measuring Techniques in Rapidly Distorted Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layers

Download or read book A Survey of Measurements and Measuring Techniques in Rapidly Distorted Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layers written by Eli Reshotko and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This AGARDograph presents a wide range of recent work on compressible turbulent boundary layers. Special attention has been paid to flows with rapid changes in pressure including flows with shock waves, curved walls and expansions. Recent developments in the theory and experimental practice for these flows are presented. The application of rapid distortion theory to flows traversing expansion and shock waves is reviewed. This is followed by an account of experiments in progress aimed at elucidating the large scale structures present in supersonic boundary layers. The current status of the techniques of Laser-Doppler and Hot Wire anemometry in supersonic flow is discussed, and a new interferometric technique for the determination of wall-stress is described. The use of small pressure transducers to deduce information abut the structure of zero pressure-gradient and severly perturbed boundary layers is investigated. Finally there is an extension of the review and data presentation of AGARDographs 223, 253 and 263 to cover some of the experiments dealing with rapidly distorted layers.

Book excerpt: The material in this NASA TM is to appear as a chapter on Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) in the AGARDograph entitled, A Survey of Measurements and Measuring Techniques in Rapidly Distorted Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layers. The application of LDA (specifically, the dual-beam, burst-counter approach) to compressible flows is discussed. Subjects treated include signal processing, particle light scattering and tracking, data reduction and sampling bias, and three-dimensional measurements. Johnson, Dennis A. Book Compressible Turbulence Measurements in a Supersonic Boundary Layer Including Favorable Pressure Gradient Effects

Download or read book Compressible Turbulence Measurements in a Supersonic Boundary Layer Including Favorable Pressure Gradient Effects written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of a favorable pressure gradient on the turbulent flow structure in a Mach 2.9 boundary layer (Re/m approx. 1.5 x 10(exp 7)) is investigated experimentally. Conventional flow and hot film measurements of turbulent fluctuation properties have been made upstream of and along an expansion ramp. Upstream measurements were taken in a zero pressure gradient boundary layer 44 cm from the nozzle throat in a 6.35 cm square test section. Measurements are obtained in the boundary layer, above the expansion ramp, 71.5 cm from the nozzle throat. Mean flow and turbulent flow characteristics are measured in all three dimensions. Comparisons are made between data obtained using single and multiple-overheat cross-wire anemometry as well as conventional mean flow probes. Conventional flow measurements were taken using a Pitot probe and a 10 degree cone static probe. Flow visualization was conducted via imaging techniques (Schlieren and shadowgraph photographs). Results suggest that compressibility effects, as seen through the density fluctuations in the Reynolds shear stress are roughly 10% relative to the mean velocity and are large relative to the velocity fluctuations. This is also observed in the total Reynolds shear stress; compressibility accounts for 50 - 75% of the total shear. This is particularly true in the favorable pressure gradient region, where though the peak fluctuation intensities are diminished, the streamwise component of the mean flow is larger, hence the contribution of the compressibility term is significant in the Reynolds shear.

Book An Experimental Investigation of the Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layer with a Favorable Pressure Gradient

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layer with a Favorable Pressure Gradient written by David L. Brott and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper describes the results of a detailed experimental investigation of a two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer in a favorable pressure gradient where the free-stream Mach number varied from 3.8 to 4.6 and the ratio of wall to adiabatic-wall temperature has a nominal value of 0.82. Detailed profile measurements were made with pressure and temperature probes; skin friction was measured directly with a shear balance. The velocity- and temperature-profile results were compared with zero pressure gradient and incompressible results. The skin-friction data were correlated with momentum-thickness Reynolds number and pressure-gradient parameter. (Author).

Book A Critical Commentary on Mean Flow Data for Two dimensional Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layers

Download or read book A Critical Commentary on Mean Flow Data for Two dimensional Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layers written by Hans-Hermann Fernholz and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a discussion of mean flow profile data for compressible boundary layers. In AGARDograph 223, (Fernholz and Finley, 1977) the predecessor of this volume, data were presented for nominally two-dimensional flows for which mean flow profile data were available in tabular form. Data for 59 experimental boundary layer studies were given, with a brief introduction. Comment and discussion were reserved for this volume, AGARDograph 253. Suitable cross-references are given to relate the discussion in this volume to the earlier publication. The commentary in this volume includes discussion of the theroetical basis for interpretation of measurements, concepts from low-speed studies, interpretation of mean flow data with and without pressure gradient. The causes of normal pressure gradients are described, so as to allow an estimation of their magnitude, and their influence on boundary layer scale lengths. A third volume is planned in this series, which will include additional data, some of which is discussed here. This work was sponsored by the Fluid Dynamics Panel of AGARD. (Author).

Book Thoughts on Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layers

Download or read book Thoughts on Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layers written by John Laufer and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A qualitative discussion is given on compressibility effects on turbulence. An attempt is made to extract the main features of supersonic and hypersonic turbulent boundary layers from the information available and to examine the calculation techniques and transformation methods used for predicting behavior. These predictions include estimations of mean velocity and temperature distribution. In the absence of a theory for compressible or even incompressible turbulent boundary layers, most analytical studies approach the problem by reducing it essentially to the problem of an incompressible fluid. A critical examination is made in terms of both the direct approach and the transformation method. Finally, some experiments are recommended to help generate a more consistent empirical formulation of the hypersonic boundary layer problem and improve present methods of measurement regarding mean velocity and mean temperature distributions.
