Book The Experiences of Refugee Youth from Burma in an American High School

Download or read book The Experiences of Refugee Youth from Burma in an American High School written by Lisa Roof and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume uses critical ethnographic methods to trace the experiences and identities of refugee students from Burma as they move through their final year of schooling in an urban high school in the United States. Against the backdrop of increasing tensions surrounding immigration and identity in America, The Experiences of Refugee Youth from Burma in an American High School presents an analysis of the academic paths of adolescent immigrants and the challenges they face throughout their schooling. Delving into the historical and socio-political context of the school and surrounding landscape, this volume offers an immersive, insider perspective of the educational circumstances of SaySay, Paw Htoo, and Hlaing, the three newcomer youths—from Burma. Through detailed ethnographic narratives, readers are introduced to resilient adolescents who navigate their way through the maze of social expectations, language-learning demands, and ethnic-related tensions to rebuild their identities in the United States. By highlighting the students’ stories and identities, the book shows how racism is subtly woven into the fabric of education in the United States, and how schools can provide more equitable schooling for newcomers from other nations. This volume will benefit graduate students, researchers, academics, and pre-service teachers in the fields of English language learning, refugee and immigrant education, and the sociology of education. Those with an interest in urban and multicultural education will also find this text useful.

Book Students from Indo China

Download or read book Students from Indo China written by Paula Kelly and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes the situation of young refugees from Kampuchea, Laos and Viet Nam in Australian schools. It aims to promote understanding of the problems facing Indo-Chinese students and of their experiences and attitudes. It is intended as a working document for people involved in education and curriculum development. Data were gathered from students, parents and educators by means of case studies, interviews, questionnaires and workshops. The six chapters include information on: 1) the experiences of refugees in their own countries and during resettlement in Australia; 2) the different cultural and religious backgrounds of the various ethnic groups; 3) the educational systems in their countries of origin; 4) the techniques used in schools in Australia and the attitudes of teachers to refugee students; 5) the results of questionnaires and interviews with teachers, students and parents; and 6) five individual case studies. The research findings are presented in both tabular and descriptive form. The authors emphasize that refugees from Indo-China constitute a wide range of cultural, socio-economic, religious and political groups. However, in many cases, students are stereotyped by the media and by teachers, who view them as a homogeneous group and ignore their different ethnic origins. While there are some innovative teachers and programmes in Australia, the authors found that these were isolated and there was no opportunity for sharing experiences. There is a lack of trained ethnic teachers. The authors conclude that many students have not succeeded in adapting from the educational system in their countries of origin to the educational system in Australia. Most schools have reacted to the migration in an unplanned and uncoordinated manner. Among the specific causes of action recommended are suitable training for teachers; the exchange of ideas among teachers; and the integration of ethnic teachers. The study ends with a bibliography.

Book National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988

Download or read book National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 written by Laura Horn and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1992 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88) is the third in a series of longitudinal studies sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics. The NELS:88 is being conducted in several waves, beginning with a base year experience of approximately 25,000 eighth graders. This report profiles the family characteristics and the level of involvement reported by the parents of 1988 eighth graders, using the base year survey and dropout data from the first follow-up. About 93 percent of the parents of the first year sample were interviewed to provide information about home life and family experiences. The parent component is not, however, a representative sample of eighth graders' parents. Their inclusion is linked to the student participants. This study examined child-directed involvement, including activities such as parent-child discussions and school-directed involvement such as parent-teacher association membership and volunteering in the school. There was some indication that parent involvement was related to whether or not students scored below the basic level in reading or mathematics proficiency, but there was a strong relationship between parent involvement and whether or not a student dropped out of school between the 8th and 10th grades. There are 26 tables and 18 figures presenting study findings. (SLD)
