Book A SURVEY OF CONVENTIONAL AND UNCONVENTIONAL SUB MARINE PROPULSION SYSTEMS

Download or read book A SURVEY OF CONVENTIONAL AND UNCONVENTIONAL SUB MARINE PROPULSION SYSTEMS written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey is made of a variety of conventional and unconventional submarine propulsion systems. Included are three all-mechanical systems, two inboard turboelectric systems, and six in board/outboard turboelectric systems incorporating free-flooding propulsion motors. Some of these systems also provide ship control features in addition to the requisite normal propulsion. A current FBM ship, SSB(N)616, is used as a reference design throughout, and only the propulsion system is varied. The propulsion system as considered starts at the main steam line and ends with generation of thrust. It includes one or more steam turbine prime movers, mechanical or electric power transmissions, and propulsors. The eleven systems are described and compared, and four are indicated as offering potential improvements over the current propulsion system.

Book Impacts of Electric Propulsion Systems on Submarine Design

Download or read book Impacts of Electric Propulsion Systems on Submarine Design written by Michael Alfred Ballard and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical study was carried out on the effects of replacing submarine turbine-reduction gear propulsion drive systems with an equivalent electric drive system. Alternating current (A.C.) and direct current (D.C.) systems were designed using computer based machine synthesis programs. The systems considered included direct drive motors operating at the speed of the submarine drive shaft and motors operating at higher speeds in conjunction with integral single stage reduction gears. Methods to improve the efficiency of the various motors for speeds other than rated speed were examined. The impacts of the electric system designs were evaluated in terms of the ability of a mechanical drive submarine design to accept the replacement of the mechanical components with the equivalent electric components and meet standard submarine design closure criteria. All electric drive variants met the basic naval architectural feasibility requirements. Electric drive systems were heavier, required less arrangeable volume and were generally less efficient than the mechanical baseline ship. Gear reduced electric systems were lighter and more than the direct drive, low speed motor based systems. Electric submarine drive is a feasible alternative to conventional mechanical, locked train transmission systems. Electric drive installations carry penalties in terms of added weight and reduced propulsion plant efficiency that must be recognized and accepted by the ship designer. Keywords: Theses; Submarine engineering; Electric propulsion system.

Book Analysis of the Operational Impacts of Alternative Propulsion Configurations on Submarine Maneuverability

Download or read book Analysis of the Operational Impacts of Alternative Propulsion Configurations on Submarine Maneuverability written by Brian Douglas Heberley and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to develop submarine designs that deliver reduced size submarines with equivalent capabilities of the current USS VIRGINIA (SSN-774 Class) submarine, a joint Navy/Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) called the Tango Bravo (TB) program was initiated in 2004 to overcome technology barriers that have a large impact on submarine size and cost. A focus area of the TB program is propulsion concepts not constrained by a centerline shaft. This thesis investigates the operational impacts that a conceptual propulsion configuration involving the use of azimuthing podded propulsors has on a submarine. Azimuthing pods have been used commercially for years, with applications on cruise ships being quite common although their use on large naval platforms has been nonexistent to date. The use of such systems on a submarine would allow for the removal of systems related to the centerline shaft; freeing up volume, weight, and area that must be allocated and potentially allowing the submarine designer to get outside the speed-size-resistance circular path that results in large, expensive platforms. Potential benefits include having the pods in a relatively undisturbed wake field -possibly increasing acoustic performance as well as improving operational maneuvering characteristics. For this thesis a submarine maneuvering model was created based on analytical techniques and empirical data obtained from the DARPA SUBOFF submarine hullform. This model was analyzed for two configurations: ** A centerline shaft configuration utilizing cruciform control surfaces for yaw and pitch control; ** A podded configuration utilizing pods for propulsion as well as yaw and pitch control. The maneuvering characteristics for each configuration were investigated and quantified to include turning, depth changing, acceleration, deceleration, and response to casualties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propulsion system behaviour is a key aspect for the overall dynamics of a ship. However, despite its great importance, numerical methodologies for detailed investigations on marine propulsion dynamics are not yet widely covered in scientific literature. This book presents the main steps for the development of a multi-physic simulation platform, able to represent the motions of a twin screw ship in six degrees of freedom, taking into account the whole propulsion system and automation effects. A number of mathematical sub-models had been developed and calibrated by a set of experimental tests, in model and full scale. Finally, the sea trials campaign of a ship is used to validate and tune the developed simulator. The proposed simulation methodology can be used in the ship preliminary design phase, in order to plan and test the propulsion system and automation. Further applications can include the design optimization and crew training.

Book Concepts in Submarine Design

Download or read book Concepts in Submarine Design written by Roy Burcher and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-10-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the many engineering and architectural aspects of submarine design and how they relate to each other and the operational performance required of the vessel. Concepts of hydrodynamics, structure, powering and dynamics are explained, in addition to architectural considerations which bear on the submarine design process. The interplay between these aspects of design is given particular attention, and a final chapter is devoted to the generation of the concept design for the submarine as a whole. Submarine design makes extensive use of computer aids, and examples of algorithms used in concept design are given. The emphasis in the book is on providing engineering insight as well as an understanding of the intricacies of the submarine design process. It will serve as a text for students and as a reference manual for practising engineers and designers.

Book Forged in War

Download or read book Forged in War written by Gary E. Weir and published by Naval Historical Center. This book was released on 1993 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to analyze the partnership between the Navy, industry, and science forged by World War II and responsible for producing submarines in the United States in the period from 1940 through 1961. The naval-industrial complex was not the result of a single historical event. Neither was it a political-economic entity. Instead it was made up of many unique and distinct components, all of which developed simultaneously; each reflected the development, significance, and construction of a particular vessel or technology within its historical context. Together these components emerged from World War II as a network of distinct relationships linked together by the motives of national defense, mutual growth, and profit. None of the major players in the drama planned or predetermined the naval-industrial complex, and it did not conform to the views of any individual or confirm the value of a particular system of management. Instead it grew naturally in response to the political environment, strategic circumstances, and perceived national need, its character defined gradually not only by the demands of international conflict but also by the scores of talented people interested in the problems and possibilities of submarine warfare. Their combined efforts during this short period of time produced remarkable advances in nuclear propulsion, submerged speed, quieting, underwater sound, and weaponry, as well as a greater appreciation within the Navy and the shipbuilding industry for the ocean environment. This book won the Roosevelt Prize for naval history.
