This book was released on 2012 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, more than 25 million adults and children worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS and more than 75% of these were in sub-Saharan Africa. Studies indicate that the incidence of HIV infection and the prevalence of high-risk behaviors among young populations continue to rise in developing countries. AIDS has severe economic impacts, especially in high-risk countries such as Nigeria. This project used secondary data from the 2003 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. The 2003 NDHS is a cross-sectional, multistage, stratified survey with systematic sampling that was designed to obtain information on key population and health indicators such as sexual activity, knowledge about AIDS and other STDs, and behavior associated with AIDS and other STDs for the entire Nigerian population, including people living in rural areas, urban areas, and six major geographic regions. Analyses were restricted to sexually active adolescents and young adults 15 to 24 years of age who are Nigerians living in Nigeria in 2003. The sample size was (n=2,418), of which 2,009 are females and 409 are males. Non-Nigerians and Nigerians in Diaspora were excluded in the original design of the survey. Also, those younger than 15 years or older than 24 years were excluded in this study. This research examined the association between independent variables and other covariates with risky sexual behaviors such as lack of condom use and multiple sex partners, as well as possible difference by gender. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using multivariate logistic regression models, adjusting for age, education and religion. All tests were done at 95% significant leve. l-- Abstract.

Book excerpt: The aim of this research is to investigate the perceptions of sexual health among adolescent Niuean females who were born in New Zealand. The main objectives were to explore sources of sexual health education and information among participants and to identify the barriers or gaps that prevent young Niuean women from accessing appropriate sexual health education, information, treatment and health services. Twenty participants were interviewed for this qualitative study. Participants needed to be female, of Niuean descent, New Zealand born, aged between 16-24 years and living in Auckland. Each individual was interviewed face to face using a semi structured approach. Data was analysed using a general inductive approach. The emerging themes which related to the research objectives were categorised into a framework which provided an underlying structure of the experiences from participants. Key themes explored were first sexual experience, sexual health activity, sexually transmitted infections, contraception, pregnancy and sexual health services. This study also explored where and what type of sexual health education or information participants had received and whether this had an impact on their sexual health behaviour. The study findings raised concerns around the lack of knowledge participants had towards contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted infections and sexual health services. There was a high number of unplanned teenage pregnancies among the young women. The lack of knowledge around the most common sexually transmitted infection Chlamydia was particularly evident, with knowledge only being present among those who had a history of acquiring this infection. The young women were also unaware of sexual health services available. A key finding of this study highlighted the important role Niuean women have, with mothers and sisters commonly identified as key educators in the transmission of sexual health information. Health professionals that were not Niuean and not their regular practitioner were also emphasised as important individuals participants would access for sexual health information. Health professionals were regarded as knowledgeable in sexual health information and topics, which was essential for participants as they wanted to be informed with accurate information which some felt was compromised if friends or family members were used. There is a clear preference for young Niuean women to use services that did not consist of Niuean health workers. This highlights a need for current health care professionals and health care services to be opportunistic and open to sexual health discussions with New Zealand born Niuean adolescent females.

Book An Intervention to Change Knowledge Attitudes and Behavior Related to Safe Sexual Practices in Adolescent Females to Reduce the Risk for HIV Infection

Download or read book An Intervention to Change Knowledge Attitudes and Behavior Related to Safe Sexual Practices in Adolescent Females to Reduce the Risk for HIV Infection written by Stephanie Ann Griffin and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent females in the United States and around the world are at an increase risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Understanding the factors that increase adolescent females vulnerability to HIV infection is necessary for the development of an effective HIV prevention program. The objective of this proposed research grant is to implement a community based HIV prevention program for adolescent females intended to change knowledge, attitudes, and behavior related to safe sexual practices. A quantitative experimental pre-test/post-test control group design will be utilized for the proposed research study. Two hundred and sixteen adolescent females aged 13 to 18 years of age who live in San Diego County will be recruited to participate in the study. The Health Belief Model (HBM) will be used as the framework for the intervention. Both the intervention group and the control group will receive six 60-minute sessions provided by four trained female healthcare facilitators. The intervention group will receive education on HIV infection and skill building activities necessary to practice safe sex. The control group will receive education on sexual health, healthy relationships, and keeping a healthy body. The intended outcome of the proposed study is to see if there is a change in knowledge, attitudes, and behavior related to safe sexual practices in adolescent females after completing a HIV prevention program. Outcomes of the intervention will be evaluated using four instruments: (1) HIV-Knowledge Questionnaire for adolescent girls (HIV-KQ AG), (2) Adolescents’ Attitudes: AIDS Precautions Scale (3) UCLA Multi-dimensional Condom Attitudes Scale (MCAS), and (4) An Adolescent and Young Adult Condom Self- Efficacy Scale. The proposed study is significant to nursing because the advanced practice nurse (APN) is a major provider in caring for the adolescent population. This gives the APN a valuable opportunity to provide HIV prevention education that is crucial for the adoption of lifelong attitudes, skills, and behavior that support the overall health and well being of adolescent females
