Abstract: This present research aimed (1) to examine the level of sexual health knowledge, patterns of sexual attitudes and prevalence of sex-related behaviours among college students in contemporary China; (2) to explore factors predicting knowledge, attitude and behavior regarding sexuality; and (3) to assess gender differences in both characteristics and correlates. Based on data collected from 274 college students (167 male and 107 female) by the way of convenience sampling, in Hefei, China, Phase 1 of the study first selected, examined and modified (if necessary) three instruments (Sexual Health Knowledge Scale, SHKS; Sexual Attitude Scale, SAS; Sex-Related Behaviour Questionnaire, SRBQ), which was used in Phase 2 of the Study. It was found that the examined and (if necessary) modified SHKS, SAS and SRBQ showed good psychometric properties and internal consistencies, which could be useful questionnaires for the measurement of Chinese college students' sexuality regarding knowledge, attitude and behaviour. Phase 2 of the Study including Section 1, 2 and 3 explored characteristics and correlates of sexual health knowledge, sexual attitudes and sex-related behaviors among an convenience sample of 1398 college students (828 male and 570 female) in Hefei, China. The results in Section 1 demonstrated college students had very limited sexual health knowledge and boys were likely to be much more knowledgeable than girls. Subscales and global score of sexual health knowledge correlated with received sexuality education, romantic relationship experience and coming from urban area, but the overall impact of the factors studied was not strong. The results in Section 2 indicated males had neutral attitudes about sexuality and females had relatively conservative attitudes. Although the overall impact of the factors studied was not strong, several variables (i.e., relationship experience, time spent online, parents' education, family income, urbanity and sexual health knowledge, ) were statistically significantly associated with subscales and global score of sexual attitude. Age was a positive predictor of permissiveness for males and a negative predictor for females. It was found in Section 3 that specific sex-related behaviours in the last one year varied in frequency. Prevalence of some sex-related behaviors (i.e., heterosexual intercourse, oral sex) remained low, while prevalence of other sexual behaviours (i.e., masturbation, pornography use) was high. The magnitude of gender differences in some sex-related behaviors (i.e., oral sex) was relatively small while there was the big gender gap in other sexual behaviours (i.e., masturbation). Moreover, students who had romantic relationship experience, lower educational aspiration or had received sexuality education reported more sexual behaviors involvement. Interestingly, males, but not females, were significantly influenced by time spent online. The thesis suggested significance at theoretical, empirical and practical level, limitations (i.e., gender-related reporting bias, limitation of generalization) and possible directions (i.e., safe sex, sexual and gender monitories, qualitative, cross-cultural and longitudinal study) for future research by reflecting on the findings of this research. Finally, the research was evaluated in terms of practical implications for sexuality education an

Book Construction and Initial Validation of a Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Behavior Survey for College Students

Download or read book Construction and Initial Validation of a Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Behavior Survey for College Students written by Heather Eastman-Mueller and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers an in-depth investigation into the development of an online, sexual health survey for college students. Within this study the focus areas were limited to three components: (1) sexual knowledge, (2) sexual attitudes, and (3) sexual behavior. Sexual health topics examined within these components included: sexually transmitted diseases, rape susceptibility, alcohol and sexuality, contraceptive methods, and emergency contraception. Within this study psychometric properties of test items and internal consistency of the instrument were examined. Second, multiple correlational analyses were conducted with an established external criterion. Third, the factorial structure of the instrument was investigated. Finally, a follow-up verification of the construct validity was conducted on the final survey instrument. The results of this study identified a five-factor structure with reliability coefficients of 0.74 to 0.91. Convergent and divergent evidence was provided at the item level and the factor level. Based on these results, the final survey contained 24 knowledge items, 48 attitude items, 33 behavior items, 9 demographic items, and 13 social desirability scale items for a total of 127 items.

Book A Descriptive Study of the Sexual Health Practices of Hmong College Students Ages 18 24

Download or read book A Descriptive Study of the Sexual Health Practices of Hmong College Students Ages 18 24 written by Mai Kue (MK) Her and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Hmong college student population increases, improving services that target retention and persistence becomes more important. Understanding sexual health needs and concerns is one way to ensure academic success for college students. The Hmong are not considered an underrepresented minority group because they are lumped into the broader group of "Asian," which is populated with groups such as the Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Filipinos with higher levels of academic achievements. Unfortunately, empirical data regarding differences in sexual health behaviors and sexual health outcomes among Hmong heterosexual college students are scarce. The study examines the sexual health promotion practices, related outcomes, screening practices, and other prevention behaviors among Hmong college students. The research methodology includes an online survey questionnaire with 64 quantitative questions and one open-ended questionnaire and resulted in a final sample size of 455. For the purpose of this study, only the sexual health needs of traditional age college students who were between the ages of 18-24, single and identify as heterosexual/straight were analyzed. The final number of Hmong student respondents used for this study analysis was 250, with 171 females and 79 males, both with an average age of 20. Data were analyzed statistically using the chi-square test with an alpha level of .05. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) between sexually experienced students and Hmongness was conducted to look at the risky behaviors of the respondents. Crosstabulations on sexual health behaviors within sexually experienced (SE) and sexually inexperienced (SI) males and females were analyzed. An independent-samples t-test was run to compare the means between SE males and SE females who have engaged and never engaged in anal intercourse on sexual risk behaviors. Using thematic analysis, one open-ended question was grouped into four themes: 1) advice to college students about sexuality, 2) attitudes and values about sexuality, 3) Hmong culture and sexuality, and 4) type of education needed to appeal to Hmong students. The data analysis indicated Hmong students are like non-Hmong students in that they are delaying marriage/family to pursue education as well as utilizing contraceptive services while underutilizing STI/HIV screening. For SE respondents, the mean age at first intercourse for both sexes was 17 years of age. Males were more likely to have multiple lifetime number of partners (3.43) than females (2.26). More females than males have been tested for STIs (38.7 percent versus 13.3 percent) as well as HIV (33 percent versus 11.1 percent). Condom use was the most common method of contraception reported by male (62.2 percent) as well as female (39 percent). Sexually experienced males masturbated more on a daily and weekly basis (74.4 percent) compared to SE females (42.7 percent). Twenty-five percent of SE males and 37.1 percent of SE females have engaged in anal intercourse. Students who identified strongly with their Hmong culture and values were less likely to participate in several risk-taking behaviors (more than three partners in the last year, one-night stand, sex without a condom, cheating on a partner through intercourse, regretful sex, and anal intercourse). The study found Hmong students who were more acculturated exhibited a greater number of risky behaviors. A better understanding of intergenerational differences, acculturation factors as well as the role of Hmong traditions and family responsibilities further expand our ability to improve the health of Hmong in America. These results suggest that many college bound Hmong men and women are putting higher education before sexual relationships and are crafting a sexual ethic based more on responsibility. Finally, more research is needed that disaggregates Hmong data from the larger API group.

Abstract: Unsafe sexual behavior among teenagers and young adults would have critical personal impact as well as social and economic burden to the society. The major negative consequences of unsafe sexual behavior were the unwanted teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In recent decade, different types of adolescent sex education programs were developed in order to safeguard adolescents' health and relieve the public health burden resulting from the negative consequences of unintended teenage pregnancy and STDs; and different studies were published to evaluate the effectiveness of the adolescent sex education programs in the Asian countries. In this systematic review, 15 studies evaluating the effectiveness of adolescent sex education programs from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Thailand and Vietnam, were identified. The adolescent sex education program was an effective approach for increasing the knowledge towards HIV/AIDS; some of them were also beneficial on improving the refusal skills towards sexual appeal or knowledge, efficacy or attitude in condom use. Nevertheless, due to the difference of study designs, sample size and outcome variables across studies, it is difficult to give an overall result in this review. i DOI: 10.5353/th_b4842553 Subjects: Sex instruction for teenagers - Asia

Book The Influece of Parent youth Interaction on Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors Among Unmarried Youth in Vientiane Capital City Lao PDR

Download or read book The Influece of Parent youth Interaction on Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors Among Unmarried Youth in Vientiane Capital City Lao PDR written by Sychareun Vanphanom and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Sexual attitudes and behaviors are important aspects of adolescent reproductive health because of the potential negative health consequences of having unsafe sex. Understanding the factors at the individual, partner, peer and family levels that influence the sexual attitudes and behaviors of youth will help us to design better health education programs for youth. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 2002 among 1,200 (700 males and 500 females) young people in urban areas of Vientiane province. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to collect data. Focus group discussions were undertaken to explore reproductive health behavior and attitudes of unmarried youth and parent-youth connectedness and sexual communication. In total, eight focus groups with 64 participants were completed. Respondents in the survey included urban male and female youth aged 18 - 24 years selected through a multi-stage sampling design and interviewed face-to-face using a structured questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using cross-tabulation, ANOVA, logistic regression, Cox Hazard regression and multiple linear regression. Results: Data was collected on sexual attitudes and behavior, and the socio-demographic, psychosocial and parental-interaction correlates of sexual attitudes and behavior. Key findings are highlighted below: -Less than half of male and about one-fifth of females was sexually experienced. The mean age at sexual debut was similar for males and females at 18.5 and 18.6 years respectively. .. Multiple partners and irregular condom use was reported. -Talking about sexual matters was more acceptable for males than for females. The majority of respondents held liberal sexual attitudes for males, agreeing that premarital sex is acceptable for young men in Lao society. -For males, age, attending school, education, feeling less happy and often feeling lonely were correlated with sexual attitudes and behavior, while for females, none of the socio-demographic background characteristics were correlated with sexual attitudes and behaviors. -There was a relationship between family structure variables (mother's education, mother working, and mother living) and male sexual attitudes. None of the family structure variables were significantly related to the sexual attitudes and behavior of female youth. -There was a negative correlation between mother-son connectedness and sexual behavior; whereas for females, there was no relationship between parent-respondent connectedness and sexual attitudes and behavior. -There was a negative relation between mother-son general communication and sexual attitudes. -Father-son sexual communication was related to liberal sexual attitudes. None of parentdaughter sexual communication variables were significantly related to sexual attitudes. -There was only a negative relationship between father-son sexual communication and male youth sexual attitudes and behaviors. In contrast mother-son sexual communication was related to early onset of first sexual intercourse and a higher likelihood of having multiple sex partners. -Specific sexual communication about sexuality has more effect on behaviors such as age at first sexual intercourse and condom use then general communication. There was a significant positive relationship between father-son discussion about birth control and condom use, whereas mother-son discussion about birth control was associated with reduced odds of condom use. There was a positive association between mother-son discussions about when to start having sex and later age at first sexual intercourse. -For the set of perceived parental expectations regarding sex, only the negative correlation between perceived mother disapproval of sex and sexual attitudes of female youth was statistically significant. -Several factors of intimate relationships and peer influence were strong predictors of sexual attitudes and behavior for both males and females. The results of this study point to the complexity of parent-youth interaction and the interrelationship between parenting processes and youth sexual attitudes and behavior. The model incorporating the full range of variables was able to explain significantly more variation in sexual attitudes and behavior compared to more restricted models. Conclusion: The findings indicate that sex education needs to take into account the influence of gender norms on the attitudes and behaviors of boys and girls in terms of their relationships. A gender specific approach to sex education is needed because of the difference between boys and girls in sexual attitudes and behaviors. Recommendations are made for developing and implementing sex education programs by involving parents in the prevention programs, enhancing parent-youth connectedness, providing timely and accurate information to their children, promoting youth's responsibility for their sexual health and helping the youth to build skills to protect their sexual health.

Book Predictors of Hookup Behaviors Among Asian and Asian American College Students in the United States

Download or read book Predictors of Hookup Behaviors Among Asian and Asian American College Students in the United States written by Yushan Zhao and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With norms for sexual behavior constantly changing in both the United States and Asia, there is a need for research examining participation in potentially risky sexual behaviors among Asian and Asian Americans attending college in the United States. This study focused on attachment orientation, hookup motivations, and cultural attitudes as predictors of hookup behaviors, which involve engaging in sexual behaviors without the expectation of a long-term relationship. Participants included 169 Asian or Asian American undergraduate students (107 female; 62 male) ranging in age from 18 to 27 years old who completed an online survey. Results indicated that over a third of participants reported engaging in hookup behaviors and that the strongest predictors of hookup behaviors were increased age, liberal sexual attitudes, and motivations viewing hookups as a way to achieve excitement or to find a long-term partner. These results provide insight into a profile of Asian American college students increasingly exploring sexuality throughout young adulthood. What is the public significance of this article? Results indicate that over a third of Asian and Asian American college students participating in this study reported engaging in hookup behaviors, which involve engaging in sexual behaviors without the expectation of a long-term relationship. Educational programming for Asian American college students should target beliefs and attitudes surrounding the exploration of sexual behaviors throughout young adulthood.
