Book A Study of the Spotted Tinamous and the Pale Spotted Tinamous of Argentina

Download or read book A Study of the Spotted Tinamous and the Pale Spotted Tinamous of Argentina written by Gardiner Bump and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tinamous are the principal upland game birds of South America. The spotted tinamou group Nothura is the most widely distributed and abundant of the tinamous resident in Argentina. It inhabits short grasslands, often rather intensively grazed and utilized but is not dependent upon adjacent cultivation. Various species appear to a climatically adaptable to the southern and southwestern United States. This study presents in detail the characteristics, habitat and climatic requirements, life history, and propagation of the several species and subspecies of spotted and pale spotted tinamous as a means of evaluating the desirability of and potential for a successful trial introduction in the United States.

Book Mourning Dove Status Report 1967

Download or read book Mourning Dove Status Report 1967 written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nationwide dove population indexes presented in the 1967 Mourning Dove Status Report were obtained by essentially the same data gathering and analyzing procedures as in 1966. A refinement was made in the base year index, using the mean of the 1966 and 1967 readings as the base for all States. There was a slight adjustment in physiologic region boundaries. Data analyses suggest that the 1967 dove populations declined to approximately the 1965 level in all units. Present population indexes in all units are below the 10-year (1957-1966) mean. Long-term trends in population densities indicate that dove breeding populations in all units are considerably below the peak of 1960 and, with the exception of the Eastern Management Unite, are at their lowest level since 1957.

Book Conservation of Endangered Species in Captivity

Download or read book Conservation of Endangered Species in Captivity written by Edward F. Gibbons Jr. and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1995-08-31 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-disciplinary approach to conservation of endangered species in captivity is organized taxonomically and by scientific discipline. The seven taxonomic groups included are invertebrates; fish, reptiles and amphibians, birds, marine mammals, primates, and other mammals. Within each taxonomic group, four scientific disciplines are explored: conservation, reproductive physiology, behavior, and captive design. Conservation chapters summarize the status of the taxonomic group both in the wild and in captivity. Reviewed in the reproductive physiology chapters are anatomy, endocrinology and physiology for females and males of the taxonomic group. In the section on behavior the functions of captive animal research, the methods used, and the problems encountered are discussed. And, in examining captive design the authors provide a general historical outline of the philosophies, trends, and scientific issues for the targeted taxonomic group.

Download or read book Avian Growth and Development written by J. Matthias Starck and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first re-appraisal in 50 years of concepts of development made in birds. This book is a case study in evolutionary diversification of life histories. Although birds have a rather uniform body plan and physiology, they exhibit marked variation in development type, parental care, and rate of growth. Altricial birds are fully dependent on their parents for warmth and nutrition and begin posthatching life in a more or less embryonic condition. At the other extreme, such superprecocial species as the megapodes are independent of all parental care from hatching, and the neonate, able to fly, resembles an adult bird. This book thus attempts to present an integrative perspective of organism biology, ecology, and evolution.
