Book POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS AT A NC PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL A PROGRAM EVALUATION

Download or read book POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS AT A NC PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL A PROGRAM EVALUATION written by Christopher Lynn Meadows and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AB STRACTChris Meadows, POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS AT A NC PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL: A PROGRAM EVALUATION (Under the direction of Dr. Marjorie Ringler). Department of Educational Leadership, December 2020.Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a multi-tiered framework utilized in over 26,000 schools across the United States, to create a school culture consisting of a positive learning environment and successful student (Sugai & Horner, 2020). This study sought to determine the effectiveness of PBIS at a North Carolina public charter school in regards to three major indicators: student attendance; student academic achievement; and student discipline. The rise of charter schools in both the US and NC is discussed along with charter school advocate and critic perceptions. To gain a greater understanding of the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of PBIS at this charter, many topics were detailed to mirror the charter's student population. At the time of the study, the study site was predominately African American and high poverty. Because of the predominate student population of the study's site, African American and high poverty student issues and concerns are discussed based on numerous educational theorist's ideas and their respective research. Determining the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of PBIS at the charter occur through data collection procured through various PBIS documents from the three years at the charter, equating to the first year (2017-18) of PBIS implementation, the second year (2018-2019) of PBIS implementation, and the third year (2019- 2020) of PBIS implementation. The three years of data included student proficiency on NC End of Grade (EOG) assessments, student suspension data, and student attendance rates. Qualitative data was obtained from charter school staff responses of semi-structured interview questions. The evaluation of this this program was completed with the CIPP (Context; Input; Process; and Product) method. The program evaluation was favorable overall in the fidelity of PBISimplementation and generated the following findings: academic growth in each of the three years of PBIS implementation; a decrease in student short-term suspensions in each of the three years of PBIS implementation; and a steady and remarkable increase in student attendance rate in each of the three years of PBIS implementation.

Book School Wide Positive Behavior Support Programs in Elementary Schools

Download or read book School Wide Positive Behavior Support Programs in Elementary Schools written by Chelsea T. Siegel and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavior problems continue to be an issue for teachers and parents to address. Studies have shown that challenging behaviors in early childhood are linked to problems in the areas of academics and socialization in adolescence and adulthood. Most schools use a reactive, consequence-based approach to behavior management. With school violence and behavior incidents on the rise, it seems there is a need to look at alternative ways of addressing these problems. School-wide positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) is a concept that creates an inclusive school environment, addressing all students' behavioral challenges on a continuum of need. Students are taught social skills and appropriate behaviors, and reinforced for exhibiting those behaviors by staff and teachers consistently. For the past ten years, researchers have been looking at the effects of PBS and have found that it has been successful in improving learning environments, reducing problem behaviors, and even improving academic achievement. The purpose of this literature review is to learn more about school-wide behavior programs at the elementary school level and the key elements that make them successful. If these programs do, in fact, improve learning outcomes for students, then what are the implications for future educational practice and school reform?

Book The Impact of School wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support on Special Groups of Students

Download or read book The Impact of School wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support on Special Groups of Students written by Shavoncia C. Watts and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research study was to investigate the impact School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (SWPBIS) had on the academic achievement and behavior of African American, special education, economically disadvantaged, and English Language Learner students in a high-performing high school. These subpopulation students often have lower rates of academic achievement and higher incidences of anti-social behaviors within educational settings. The data collected from this study indicate a relationship between SWPBIS and increased academic achievement and decreased incidences of anti-social behavior of students. The findings from this study will inform building level and district-level educators of the implications of SWPBIS for special groups of students in order to bolster their behaviors and academic achievement, thereby facilitating success for all.

Book The Effects of School wide Behavior Support on Special Education Students Achievement and Office Discipline Referrals

Download or read book The Effects of School wide Behavior Support on Special Education Students Achievement and Office Discipline Referrals written by Sandy Dawes and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effect School-Wide Positive Behavior Support had on special education students. achievement and office discipline referrals. Sixty-nine special education students from eight elementary schools participated in this study. Thirty-four participants were in the group with School-Wide Positive Behavior Support, and 35 participants were in the group with no discipline program. The participants all had attended their schools for a minimum of two consecutive years. A quantitative causal comparative research method was utilized to compare the participants with School-Wide Positive Behavior Support to the participants with no School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Program. This study utilized two school years of archival data to obtain students. TCAP math and language achievement test scores. Several methods were utilized to obtain the office discipline referrals from the participating schools. The data was then analyzed and the nine null hypotheses were tested. A t- test was utilized for much of the data to compare the means and determine a means difference. Some of the data was not normally distributed and a non-parametric test also was utilized for three of the null hypotheses. The researcher in this study set the alpha level of significance at .05. After careful analysis of the data this study concluded that School-Wide Positive Behavior Support does not have a statistically significant effect on math and language achievement scores or office discipline referrals. The null hypotheses were retained. This study was conducted after a year of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support implementation. The literature review found that the longer the program is in effect the more probable it is for schools to see significant results. Also, the researcher found that if the alpha had been set at .10 a statistical significance would have been found, in terms of office discipline referrals. It is recommended that further research be conducted on the effects of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support. If this study were replicated after the program has been in place for four years, the data analysis may find different outcomes. Utilizing an entire school population would give the researcher more information and might have different results also. Utilizing School-Wide Positive Behavior Support is aiding in meeting the discipline needs of schools across the country, and research on its effects should be continued.

Book The Effects of the First Year of Implementation of Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports

Download or read book The Effects of the First Year of Implementation of Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports written by Rosalind Flanigan Operton and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disciplinary practices and protocols in schools have been a notable concern over the past 30 years. The traditional punitive punishment-based tactics have not proven to be effective in changing student behavior. Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) is a proactive alternative that puts whole school systems in a place wherein students and teachers share in the responsibility of building a culture and climate of behaviors that produce positive outcomes. Research based on the implementation of PBIS in schools has concluded that problem behaviors decrease, students and staff feel safe, and attendance improves. There is a body of research that concludes that implementing such changes is effective in reducing office discipline referrals in major disciplinary actions and in creating a positive school climate. The current study examined the effectiveness of changing from reactive, punitive, zero-tolerance practices to proactive positive behavioral interventions. The research focused on the effects of PBIS on the percentage and number of office discipline referrals (ODRs) for African-American and special education students after the first year’s implementation of PBIS in a school district of approximately 6,000 students. The results indicate that ODRs decreased during the implementation of PBIS.

Book The impact of a school wide postive behavioral support approach on schools

Download or read book The impact of a school wide postive behavioral support approach on schools written by Brad C. Schwartzbauer and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All students should have the ability to be in a safe environment in which they are given every opportunity to learn. Creating an environment where all students can have success is an important topic for most administrators and educators. There is a great amount of money spent on programs to identify and work with challenging behaviors. One of these programs in Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a fairly new discipline model that is starting to be used in schools. The purpose of this thesis is to look at the effectiveness of a program like PBIS. The study found that if the PBIS is done effectively in schools, it can have a positive impact on student outcomes. That impact can be shown in better attendance, higher test scores, and fewer problem behaviors throughout the school year. PBIS can also have a positive impact on the staff that works under this model. The study found that teachers who work in an effectively run PBIS setting spend less time with discipline referrals, have continued access to professional development, and are able to use data to help drive instruction where it is needed.

Book A Developmental Examination of School wide Positive Behavior Support in Elementary School

Download or read book A Developmental Examination of School wide Positive Behavior Support in Elementary School written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) programs integrate research-based practice within a three-tier approach of prevention and intervention to impact change within school systems. Research suggests positive changes in student outcomes with the implementation of SWPBS. Supported by social-ecological and behavioral theory, this longitudinal study compared school climate and achievement outcomes in a school implementing a SWPBS program with one that is not. The use of time-series analysis and hierarchical and multinomial logistic regression analysis allowed for a complete picture to emerge of the effects of SWPBS programs. No treatment effects of SWPBS programs were noted between the target and comparison school with regard to school climate or academic outcomes. Relative risk and regression analysis converged to paint a picture of demographic characteristics that lead to increased disciplinary risk. Specifically, students from African American, low socioeconomic status, and highly mobile backgrounds were more likely to receive office discipline referrals before and after SWPBS implementation Conversely, disciplinary risk for Hispanic youth decreased over the years of the study.

Book Handbook of Positive Behavior Support

Download or read book Handbook of Positive Behavior Support written by Wayne Sailor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolution in working with difficult students began during the 1980s, with a dramatic shift away from dependence on simply punishing bad behavior to reinforcing desired, positive behaviors of children in the classroom. With its foundation in applied behavior analysis (ABA), positive behavior support (PBS) is a social ecology approach that continues to play an increasingly integral role in public education as well as mental health and social services nationwide. The Handbook of Positive Behavior Support gathers into one concise volume the many elements of this burgeoning field and organizes them into a powerful, dynamic knowledge base – theory, research, and applications. Within its chapters, leading experts, including the primary developers and researchers of PBS: (1) Review the origins, history, and ethical foundations of positive behavior support. (2) Report on applications of PBS in early childhood and family contexts, from Head Start to foster care to mental health settings to autism treatment programs. (3) Examine school-based PBS used to benefit all students regardless of ability or conduct. (4) Relate schoolwide PBS to wraparound mental health services and the RTI (response to intervention) movement. (5) Provide data and discussion on a variety of topics salient to PBS, including parenting issues, personnel training, high school use, poorly functioning schools, and more. This volume is an essential resource for school-based practitioners as well as clinicians and researchers in clinical child, school, and educational psychology.

Book Impact of a Citizenship Program on Middle School Students

Download or read book Impact of a Citizenship Program on Middle School Students written by Jeanette Alcock Mughal and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2015-02 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus on behaviour became an important feat to accomplish. The query was based on the disruptive methods students would use in order to circumvent basic rules and regulations within their learning communities. The old standard rule of teacher being in “charge of the classroom” with a mixture of a fear factor, (secretly diagnosed as respect) no longer was evident. President Bush’s introduction of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) mandates was brilliant with ist idea of inclusivity, but near eliminated accountability for those able students. Teachers became the main target group of this experiment in the promotion of all students. They became, scapegoats, if you will, of a system that made them accountable, and left those who should have been accountable in meeting educational objectives: administration, and more so, the student. Teachers became overwhelmed with teaching objectives and a multitude of paperwork to facilitate this new structure of responsibility. Actual teaching was foregone under the weight of segmenting students into their proper groups, then find the time to discipline and ensure that all pass the required end-of-year examinations. The result of these initiatives was to the repeal of NCLB, and schools becoming big business, with the teacher benefiting less under a continual weight of professional servitude, and the standard--no voice.
