Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine how accurately student achievement in reading could be predicted by student perceptions of certain school climate domains (student support, disciplinary structure, academic expectations, student engagement, and the prevalence of teasing and bullying). Research demonstrated a predictive relationship between school climate domains and student academic achievement. This study applied a quantitative, correlational design to determine the predictive ability of school climate domains on student achievement in reading in rural schools. Rural school outcomes were measured by student responses for each climate domain on the 2018 Virginia School Climate Survey while academic achievement in reading was measured by school pass rates on the 2018 Virginia reading end-of-course standards-of-learning assessment. All 102 rural Virginia high schools were included in this study. Results indicated that while a weak association existed between student perceptions of school climate domains and student achievement in rural schools, a linear combination of student perceptions of school climate domains was not significantly predictive of student achievement in rural schools.

Using survey methods, data were collected using the Organizational Climate Descriptive Questionnaire Revised for Elementary Schools (OCDQ-RE) from 599 teachers in 33 schools located within the Region VII Education Service Center area. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Pearson r correlational analysis method and descriptive statistics to determine the relationship between teachers' perceptions of school climate and student achievement. Findings revealed a moderate relationship between teachers' perceptions of teacher openness when compared to standardized test scores and a small association among teachers' perceptions of principal openness and standardized test scores. By examining the overall campus climate evidence was found that campuses having an open or engaged climate typically had a higher percent of students meeting the TAKS standard when compared to campuses with a closed or disengaged climate.

Book excerpt: Elementary and middle school students' sense of self-efficacy-their belief in their abilities to achieve at desirable levels on school-related tasks-has been empirically found to be significantly related to the school climate in which it is nurtured. A paucity of research exists about the relationship between self-efficacy and school climate among high school students, however. This gap in the research is problematic as self-efficacy and school climate are important correlates of student achievement and both begin to decline as students move through middle school and into high school. This study examines the association between high school students' perceptions of a triad of widely adopted domains of school climate-teaching and learning, interpersonal relationships, and the institutional environment of the school-and their beliefs in three complementary domains of self-efficacy-academic, emotional, and social self-efficacy. This cross-sectional correlational study used survey research to capture data on perceptions of school climate and self-efficacy beliefs from 10th- and 11th-graders (N = 60) at an urban high school in Texas. A Spearman's rho correlational analysis revealed a single significant positive correlation with a medium effect size between students' perceptions of the institutional environment domain of school climate and their beliefs in their emotional self-efficacy. The study's findings suggest that other factors may mediate/moderate the relationship between the domains of school climate and self-efficacy under study, although the robustness of these conclusions must be qualified due to sampling issues that arose during the data capture.

Research shows aspects of school climate impact students, parents, teachers and administrators. Climate is global to the school yet exists as a microclimate in the classroom. The influencers of climate and reaction to climate are intertwined; as one influences the others, a variety of perspectives contribute to the overall picture. This study considers the teacher perspective as an indicator of climate as part of overall organizational health. As one must consider organizational health as a pertinent part of overall school climate, this research study utilized a reduced form of the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire designed by Bentley and Rempel to measure teacher morale (1980). Teachers from two schools within one district voluntarily and anonymously answered questions on ten subtopics reflecting their experiences as a teacher in the school environment. This organizational health inventory provided feedback from participants on 10 factors indicating levels of agreement or disagreement on a four point Likert scale (from 4 = strongly agree to 1= strongly disagree). Teachers were also asked to indicate years of experience on the presurvey question, as this study also considered if factors such as teacher years of experience had any impact on teacher perspective of climate. School climate data and data from the averages of standardized PARCC test scores per school and subject area were analyzed using Bivariate Correlation tests, revealing no significant relationship between school climate and student achievement. Although survey data provided potential consideration for areas of improvement for the district in the study, recommendations by the researcher are for further study in a wider scope to increase generalizability. More specifically, this study examined school climate as it relates to student academic achievement, attendance, and disciplinary referrals. Participants consisted of 29 females and 14 males in grades 6, 7 and 8, and their parents, from a rural middle school located in upstate New York. Schhool climate was measured using the Student version of the Yale Child Study School Development Program, School Climate Survey-Revised Version (Emmons, Haynes, & Comer, 2002). Parents reported on their child's school performance. Data analysis consisted of a One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Pearson Product-Moment Correlations, and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis. Results indicated that student-teacher relations are related to academeic achievement and that student interpersonal relationhsips affect whether students attend school. Developmentally, students at the start of middle school have a greater perception that teachers treat them fairly. As they grow older this belief decreases."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Education reformers have long sought to apply scientific framework analysis to engineer the ideal system in which both students and teachers are highly successful. Grounded in the evidence based theoretical framework of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), many academicians and practitioners are now focusing on determinants of school structure and supportive learning environments to bolster students' enjoyment of school, which supports increased positive outcomes. The Abbreviated School Climate Survey (Student Version) (Ding, Liu and Berkowitz, 2011) instrument was designed to explore student perspective of school climate as an indicator of student outcomes based on seven variables. The purpose of this study was to determine how the construct of "Structured Supportive Environment" correlates to students' enjoyment of school, using the seven-factor variables of the Abbreviated School Climate Survey, in a sample of two (2) traditional and two (2) charter public middle schools in Missouri (N=729). Using Structured Equation Modeling, the analysis demonstrated a strong positive correlation of the measured factors on enjoyment of school, thus supporting the reliability and validity of the Abbreviated School Climate Survey in measuring and predicting the effect of students' perceptions of school climate factors on outcomes. Given the strong correlation of these school climate factors--both organizational and socioemotional--on student outcomes, it should be these factors, rather than discrete standardized test scores, that should drive education policy and assessment of school quality. Future studies could use this instrument to measure the effect of school climate factors on student outcomes, including academic, social and economic aspects.

School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports provides a framework and set of ideals for educators to create a positive school culture. The current study examined differences in staff and student perceptions, as well as perceptions in primary versus secondary buildings, related to several factors of school climate (rules and expectations, safety, student relationships, teacher-student relationships). Data was collected through staff and student ratings on the Delaware School Climate Surveys and the results were compared using a MANOVA. A significant interaction was found on the Rules and Expectations and the School Safety Scales. Ideas for teaching students appropriate behavior, using data to make decisions about building practices, and matching the level of support with the needs of the students were discussed.
