In reality they also exhibit an amazing property that is not so widely known: under some conditions light flows along a metallic surface as if it were glued to it. Physical phenomena related to these light waves, which are called Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPP), have given rise to the research field of plasmonics. This thesis explores four interesting topics within plasmonics: extraordinary optical transmission, negative refractive index metamaterials, plasmonic devices for controlling SPPs, and field enhancement phenomena near metal nanoparticles.

Methods of increasing the dispersion of manufactured spectral instruments and constructing various infrared spectrometers are indicated. Book excerpt: The work has demonstrated that band theory is capable of giving a reasonably accurate account of the optical conductivity of both simple and transition metals in an energy region from the onset of direct interband transition up to excitations of the order of 5-10 eV. Lifetime broadening effects become appreciable as the excitation energy increases, but the basic structure of the optical conductivity is determined by the one electron theory. Even in the ferromagnetic transition elements, there is no evidence from any of the properties studied here that d electrons are localized, or that many body effects are unusually large. The degree of agreement between band theory and experiment is about as large for ferromagnetic metals as it is for simple metals. (Author).
