Download or read book Facts And Mysteries In Elementary Particle Physics Revised Edition written by Martinus J G Veltman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of modern particle physics accessible to anyone with a true passion for wanting to know how the universe works. We are introduced to the known particles of the world we live in. An elegant explanation of quantum mechanics and relativity paves the way for an understanding of the laws that govern particle physics. These laws are put into action in the world of accelerators, colliders and detectors found at institutions such as CERN and Fermilab that are in the forefront of technical innovation. Real world and theory meet using Feynman diagrams to solve the problems of infinities and deduce the need for the Higgs boson.Facts and Mysteries in Elementary Particle Physics offers an incredible insight from an eyewitness and participant in some of the greatest discoveries in 20th century science. From Einstein's theory of relativity to the spectacular discovery of the Higgs particle, this book will fascinate and educate anyone interested in the world of quarks, leptons and gauge theories. This book also contains many thumbnail sketches of particle physics personalities, including contemporaries as seen through the eyes of the author. Illustrated with pictures, these candid sketches present rare, perceptive views of the characters that populate the field. The Chapter on Particle Theory, in a pre-publication, was termed 'superbly lucid' by David Miller in Nature (Vol. 396, 17 Dec. 1998, p. 642).

Download or read book The Second Creation written by Robert P. Crease and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Creation is a dramatic--and human--chronicle of scientific investigators at the last frontier of knowledge. Robert Crease and Charles Mann take the reader on a fascinating journey in search of "unification" with brilliant scientists such as Niels Bohr, Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Erwin Schrödinger, Richard Feynman, Murray Gell-Mann, Sheldon Glashow, Steven Weinberg, and many others. They provide the definitive and highly entertaining story of the development of modern physics, and the human story of the physicists who set out to find the "theory of everything."
Download or read book Theory of Particle and Cluster Emission written by Doru S. Delion and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-11-10 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays experimental nuclear physics pushes its limits towards highly unstable nuclei. The theoretical description of proton-rich and neutronrich nuclei or superheavy elements has become an important part of the modern nuclear physics. The main tool to investigate such unstable nuclei concerns radioactive decays, from proton emission to fission processes. We review the main theoretical methods describing decay processes induced by the strong interaction, like Coupled channels method for Gamow resonances, R-matrix theory, Distorted wave approach, Semiclassical approach, Multi step and Two center shell model. Thus, most of the book is addressed to a broad audience within the nuclear physics community. Secondly, this book is an attempt to clarify some fundamental aspects connected with the fine structure or anisotropy in alpha decay and ternary cold fission. Finally, the self consistent microscopic theory of the alpha decay is analyzed.

Download or read book The Structure of the Proton written by R. G. Roberts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-11-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate/research level book describes our present knowledge of protons and neutrons, the particles which make up the nucleus of the atom. Experiments using high energy electrons, muons and neutrinos reveal the proton as being made up of point-like constituents, quarks. The strong forces which bind the quarks together are described in terms of the modern theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the â€~glue' binding the quarks being mediated by new constituents called gluons. Larger and new particle accelerators probe the interactions between quarks and gluons at shorter distances. The understanding of this detailed substructure and of the fundamental forces responsible is one of the keys to unravelling the physics of the structure of matter. This book will be of interest to all theoretical and experimental particle physicists.
Download or read book ABC Relaxation Theory written by Jonathan C. Smith, PhD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relaxation is the world's most popular therapy--used by more psychologists, counselors, social workers, and rehabilitation specialists than any other tool. ABC Relaxation Theory offers a new treatment strategy by presenting and enhancing the effectiveness of current relaxation treatments into an approach tailored to each client. Based on the most ambitious scientific exploration of relaxation (20 studies and 5,000 subjects from all cultures and walks of life), Smith presents some of his groundbreaking findings, including the first demonstration and replication of differences among African Americans, Latinos, and Whites; men and women; those with religious and secular beliefs approaches; and more. His work is highly readable, practical, and comprehensive and will appeal to clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, and students of psychology.
