Book A Study of the Impact of Response to Intervention on Student Achievement Scores in Elementary Schools

Download or read book A Study of the Impact of Response to Intervention on Student Achievement Scores in Elementary Schools written by Daniel Todtfeld and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project utilized data that reaches back five school years. Scores from MAP Communication Arts tests and Performance Series Communication Arts tests were collected. An ANOVA was calculated with MAP scores and Performance series data. The independent variable was the level of RTI students have received. The first group in the ANOVA consisted of students who received no RTI. Group 2 received one year of RTI and group 3 received two years of RTI. The dependent variable in the first ANOVA was MAP scores and the dependent variable in the second ANOVA was Performance Series scores. This study was inconclusive because there was a significant difference in the MAP Index, however, there was no significant difference in ELA Performance Series. Additionally, the review of literature does not provide strong enough reasoning to conclude that RTI does make a difference in student achievement.

Book The Effect of Implementation of a Response to Intervention Model on Student Achievement Special Education Referrals and Special Education Eligibility

Download or read book The Effect of Implementation of a Response to Intervention Model on Student Achievement Special Education Referrals and Special Education Eligibility written by Joseph Anthony Kucera and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to determine what, if any, differences existed in student achievement in reading for an elementary school employing a Response to Intervention (RTI) process in reading instruction and an elementary school using the school district's regular reading instructional program, and (b) to determine what, if any, differences existed between the two elementary schools related to the proportion of students referred for, and deemed eligible for, special education services. The performance of third-grade students at two elementary schools within the same central Texas school district, Elementary School 1 (employing a locally developed RTI process) and Elementary School 2 (employing the district's standard reading curriculum and standard referral process) was studied. The 2007 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) third-grade reading scores were obtained from the district's Elementary Curriculum Department. The number of special education referrals and diagnostic decisions for each elementary school were obtained from the district's Instructional Services Office at the completion of the 2006-2007 school year. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, and Fisher's z Test. Results indicated that the RTI process did not have an effect on student reading achievement, the proportion of students referred to special education, or the proportion of students found eligible for special education services. The failure to find an effect for RTI may be attributed to the limited time and experience that the teachers had in implementing the RTI process, the restricted range of achievement test scores, and the fact that the study was limited to third-grade students.

Book The Effect of Response to Intervention RTI on Student Achievement in 1st Grade

Download or read book The Effect of Response to Intervention RTI on Student Achievement in 1st Grade written by Amanda Raletz and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the use of RTI (Response to Intervention) in a first grade classroom made a significant difference upon student achievement. An elementary school in a rural Midwestern area had no implementation of RTI in the 2010-2011 school year, then implemented the RTI model in the 2011-2012 school year with a 30 minute implementation for the second half of the year in reading, then the 2012-2013 for 30 minutes in reading and then 30 minutes of math. The reading RTI has been monitored by the use of the DIBELS assessment though a beginning, middle, and end of the year benchmarks as well as progress monitoring every 2 weeks throughout the year. To analyze the DIBELS assessment the researcher found an average of all of the scores, compared the progress between the beginning of the year (BOY) to the middle of the year (MOY), middle of the year to the end of the year (EOY), and then the beginning of the year to the end of the year. I then ran an ANOVA to see if there was a significant difference between the beginning of the year and the end of the year. Through this analysis I found that there was a significant difference and that RTI in this case can be said to be effective.

Book The Effects of Response to Intervention on the Mathematics Achievement of Seventh and Eighth Grade Students

Download or read book The Effects of Response to Intervention on the Mathematics Achievement of Seventh and Eighth Grade Students written by Annette Sargent Cornelius and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the effectiveness of a system-wide Response to Intervention (RTI) program on the mathematical achievement of seventh and eighth grade students. The study consisted of five district schools with a total of 502 participants. The students were identified as belonging to one of two tiers, which differed in regard to amount of intervention. The first tier (Tier 1) of students only received the regular classroom instruction while the second tier (Tier 2/3) received an additional thirty minutes of intervention strategies. The students receiving interventions, the Tier 2/3 students, were divided into two groups. One group received primarily teacher-directed instruction (TDI) as an intervention while the other group received computer-assisted instruction (CAI) as an intervention. For the purpose of this study, the CAI intervention involved the use of the commercial program, Odyssey Math. The students were benchmark tested at the beginning and end of the 2010-2011 school year using the STAR Math assessment program and also progress monitored on a regular basis. In an attempt to determine the effectiveness of the RTI program, a gain score ANOVA was conducted using the scaled scores of the two tiers from the beginning and the end of the school year. The analysis indicated that Tier 2/3 students did demonstrate greater growth than the students in Tier 1. The gain scores of the two groups of Tier 2/3 were also used in a gain score ANOVA to measure differences in growth. An additional analysis of their mean scores was also conducted using ANCOVA. Both analyses indicated that the CAI group demonstrated greater gains. A third analysis was conducted in order to determine how accurately the STAR Math assessment program could predict student success (reaching either a Proficient or Advanced level) on the state assessment. While the STAR Math program did not accurately predict the students' level in every case, the logistic regression analysis did indicate that the program was successful in identifying struggling students.

Book Comprehensive School Reform with a Focus on Literacy

Download or read book Comprehensive School Reform with a Focus on Literacy written by Gina M. Zyburt and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the past years of Comphrensive School Reform (CSR), educators have begun to be innovative and employ strategies to support teaching and learning by incorporating high standards and inspiring high performance. Unfortunately, student achievement is not increasing and the acheivement gap is continuing to widen. The next step for schools is to utilize programs that have been researched and have proven to accelerate student learning. Research has determined that schools that have implemented a Professional Learning Community (PLC), Response to Intervention (RTI), and Lindamood-Bell (LMB) reading programs have obtained increased levels of student achievement. This case study targeted an elementary school that developed and implemented a CSR model to include the PLC, RTI, and LMB components within a framework. This CSR model was examined by analyzing student acheivement results and focus group interviews to determine impact on student learning. Student achievement in reading was measured by two formative assessments the California Standards Test (CST) and the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) Skills Assessment. Retrospective data from the assessments from the selected and a comparison school was analyzed to determine the impact the CSR model had on student achievement. Narrative methodology was also utilized to analyze interview responses from teachers in an exploratory study on Professional Learning Communities. The findings indicate that a CSR model utilizing LMB, RTI, and PLC can significantly improve student literacy. A school's ability to increase the mean CST scale score, the SCOE Reading Comphrehension raw score, and the percentage of students moving into higher performance levels within a three-year window of CSR implementation is very signifcant. The case study also indicates the importance of having key leaders at the school site that have been influential in developing the CSR model and have continued to implement the framework as designed. The consistency of personnel and its importance is indicated through the narrative responses of the teachers wihtin the focus interviews conducted as well as the student achievement outcomes in the assessment analysis. This study's CSR model exemplifies how a very concerted effort at a school site can impact student achievement in literacy.

Book How the Response to Intervention Model Utilized by an External Provider Impacts Student Achievement in an Urban Setting

Download or read book How the Response to Intervention Model Utilized by an External Provider Impacts Student Achievement in an Urban Setting written by Christopher L. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine if the interventions utilized by an external provider was impacting the student achievement for ninth-graders in an urban high school. The Response to Intervention (RTI) model is currently being utilized by the external provider to provide interventions for incoming ninth-graders in the areas of literacy and math, grounded in RTI. The RTI model can be described as an approach to integrate assessment, instruction, and interventions through a multi-tiered system that seeks to help all students, especially struggling learners. The current external provider seeks to help the struggling schools by providing extra assistance in the classrooms with their service members, who are recent college graduates from diverse backgrounds around the country. The urban high school that is the focus of this study is designated as a low socioeconomic Title I school with 80% of the student body considered free and reduced lunch, with a 20% special education population, and a high minority student population (98%). It has been designated by the state department of education as having priority status, due to a three-year trend of low end-of-year benchmark exams. Using archived testing data and stakeholder interviews, the researcher sought to answer two research questions; is there evidence of academic growth by the students needing assistance; and what are the perceptions of the stakeholders regarding the effectiveness of the program? The testing data were collected from 144 ninth-grade students in math and literacy. Using paired t-test analysis, the year-to-year results were compared to determine if there was academic improvement. The qualitative interview data from the stakeholders was analyzed using the constant-comparative method to determine if themes arose that addressed the research questions. The results indicated that there was improvement in math and literacy by the third-year of the program, indicating a cumulative effect of the program meeting the needs of the students. The qualitative interview data indicated that the stakeholders involved with the program from both sides, felt that the program was effective and was making a difference in the educational outcomes of these at risk students.

Book Progress Monitoring to Detect the Effectiveness of Response to Intervention Reading Interventions for Low Performing Elementary Student

Download or read book Progress Monitoring to Detect the Effectiveness of Response to Intervention Reading Interventions for Low Performing Elementary Student written by Shannon Stephanie Gavin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of progress monitoring in an elementary school, as 16 second through fifth-grade students participated in Response to Intervention (RTI) nine-month small group instruction intervention in reading comprehension and fluency. This study examined the following research question: "What does student progress monitoring tell educators about the effectiveness of a Response to Intervention multi-tiered system of support with second through fifth-grade students who have IEPs and who have been referred for additional support through a Student Study Team process?" The dependent variable was the tracking and analysis of students' literacy skills over the school year on a trimester basis as recorded on the AIMSweb research-based assessment for monitoring literacy performance and progress. Results indicate that participating students experienced notable yet varying progress students in reading comprehension and fluency over the course of a school year. Data suggest that progress needed to be monitored on at least the trimester basis employed in this study to accurately capture students' growth in reading achievement. Progress monitoring assessment that followed the two-week winter break or a week break led to depressed performances for some students. Students had better results when they were assessed following periods of regular instruction without break or when assessed at the end rather than the beginning of a week.

Book Using RTI for School Improvement

Download or read book Using RTI for School Improvement written by Cara Shores and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource helps administrators and teachers implement RTI as a powerful school improvement process. Response to Intervention (RTI) is currently being adopted throughout the United States as a method for documenting eligibility for a learning disability as permitted in the reauthorization of IDEA 2004. The model most often chosen involves a three- or four-tier pyramid incorporating general education classroom components in the lower tiers and special education as the final tier. Using RTI for School Improvement illustrates how integrating RTI into all aspects of a school can go beyond assessing learning disabilities to make a significant positive impact on schoolwide student achievement. The authors show how educators can successfully implement each tier to provide effective instruction for all learners, develop an intervention approach for students at risk, and provide intensive intervention for non-responding learners.
