Book excerpt: Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild is Michelle Malkin's unrestrained and uncensored exposé of hate-mongering Leftists. With wit, wisdom, and a bullet-proof vest, Malkin ruthlessly and raucously skewers the myths of liberal tolerance, peace, and civility while responding to the incendiary insults and vile slurs directed at her and other conservatives. With infuriating details that are not for the faint of heart, Malkin chronicles the bizarre world of foaming-at-the-mouth Leftists in their natural habitats: the mainstream media, academia, Hollywood, and Washington.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role played by testing in the nation's public school system has been increasing steadily-and growing more complicated-for more than 20 years. The Committee on Educational Excellence and Testing Equity (CEETE) was formed to monitor the effects of education reform, particularly testing, on students at risk for academic failure because of poverty, lack of proficiency in English, disability, or membership in population subgroups that have been educationally disadvantaged. The committee recognizes the important potential benefits of standards-based reforms and of test results in revealing the impact of reform efforts on these students. The committee also recognizes the valuable role graduation tests can potentially play in making requirements concrete, in increasing the value of a diploma, and in motivating students and educators alike to work to higher standards. At the same time, educational testing is a complicated endeavor, that reality can fall far short of the model, and that testing cannot by itself provide the desired benefits. If testing is improperly used, it can have negative effects, such as encouraging school leaving, that can hit disadvantaged students hardest. The committee was concerned that the recent proliferation of high school exit examinations could have the unintended effect of increasing dropout rates among students whose rates are already far higher than the average, and has taken a close look at what is known about influences on dropout behavior and at the available data on dropouts and school completion.

Book The College Dropout and the Utilization of Talent

Download or read book The College Dropout and the Utilization of Talent written by Lawrence A. Pervin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the complicated personal and institutional factors that influence a student's decision to terminate his studies; it investigates ways to enable him to resume his education and utilize his talents. The opening chapters approach the problem from an administrative point of view, reporting on statistical and psychological research and indicating future directions. Subsequent chapters deal with personal dimensions: relations between the student and his college environment; the effects of timing of readmission; family attitudes toward the dropout; the effectiveness of psychiatric treatment; personality traits that contribute to a student’s difficulties. College administrators will find this study relevant to policy decisions on admissions, medical services, and course structuring. Clinicians and researchers will find guidelines for therapy and suggestions for further investigation. Finally, parents of college dropouts will gain new understanding of the problem and the best way to meet it. Originally published in 1966.
