Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book Relations Among Parenting Strategies Family Contextual Variables and Child Behavior Problems Within Foster Families

Download or read book Relations Among Parenting Strategies Family Contextual Variables and Child Behavior Problems Within Foster Families written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children in foster care demonstrate higher risk for internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. What aspects of foster care might help explain these differential levels of behavioral problems found between foster and non-foster youth? Limited research exists concerning the influence of foster parenting strategies on child behavior problems and also characteristics of the foster home environment that might influence the use of certain parenting strategies over others. The primary goals of this study were to examine the relations between foster parenting strategies, child behavior problems, and family contextual variables. Participants were 335 foster/kinship parents (92.5% female; Mage = 45.44; 47.6% Kin; 40.9% Hispanic, 36.1% Caucasian, 16.4% African American, 6.6% multi/other) from San Diego County who were part of Keeping Foster Parents Trained and Supported (KEEP), a foster parent training intervention program. Data for the study were taken from baseline phone interviews, prior to intervention. Participants completed interviewer administered measures of parenting strategies, child behavior problems, and family contextual variables. Correlational and hierarchical and linear regression analyses were used to assess associations between foster parenting strategies, child behavior problems, and family contextual variables. Externalizing and internalizing child behavior problems were positively associated and controlled for in subsequent analyses. Regression analyses revealed more positive discipline was related to higher levels of externalizing behavior problems, controlling for internalizing behavior problems. Neither positive nor negative discipline explained a significant amount of variance in internalizing behavior problems, controlling for externalizing behavior problems. Non-kin caregivers used more positive reinforcement. Younger child age and fewer children in the home were related to more positive reinforcement. Higher levels of foster parent stress associated with child behavior problems was related to more positive discipline. Younger child age was associated with more positive discipline. Higher levels of foster parent stress and foster parent stress associated with child behavior problems were related to more negative discipline. Longer length of time the child spent in the home was associated with more negative discipline. Results extend the current limited research on these relations and offer implications for improving the efficacy of foster parent training interventions

Book The Effect of Foster Care Experience and Characteristics on Academic Achievement

Download or read book The Effect of Foster Care Experience and Characteristics on Academic Achievement written by Alexandra Calix and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of foster care experience and characteristics on educational outcomes. The typical strategy in examining the effect foster care has on educational outcomes is to compare the educational achievement of youth with foster care experience to that of their peers or to national norms. This strategy fails to take selection bias into account and thus findings based on this research can be misleading. Many studies also fail to provide information regarding how the experience of foster care may have contributed to low educational achievement. The study presented here used educational and child welfare data to assess the effect foster care has on educational outcomes. Four test-year cohorts of youth in North Carolina who took the Algebra I End of Course test in 1999-2002 were used in this study. The use of this data made it possible to apply propensity score matching techniques to systematically construct comparison groups of youth without foster care experience that account for selection bias. Once differences in achievement between foster care youth and non-foster care youth were examined, characteristics of the foster care experience that may contribute to low educational outcomes were assessed. Findings from this study suggest that youth with foster care experience score lower on the test and are less likely to pass than youth without foster care experience. This study also suggests that characteristics and variations based on the foster care experience such as race, reason for placement, age at entry, length of time in foster care, and number of foster care placement settings, are related to low educational achievement.

Book The Role of Foster Care Placement in Later Problem Behavior

Download or read book The Role of Foster Care Placement in Later Problem Behavior written by Sangmoo Lee and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foster care placement is an important child welfare service to protect children from further maltreatment. However, high problem behavior rates among foster youth have been a great concern. Significant limitations in the current knowledge examining the role of foster care placement in later problem behavior exist. This study seeks to increase knowledge about the potential role of foster care placement in problem behavior (juvenile delinquency, runaway, teen pregnancy, and truancy) among foster care youth, based on ecological problem solving model. Research questions are: 1) does foster care placement predict problem behavior among children who received foster care compared to those receiving Family Preservation Service? 2) what aspects of foster care placement are associated with problem behavior? This study uses the sample from a larger longitudinal study investigating the life course of children involved with child welfare services in a Midwestern metropolitan area. The sample consists of children who experienced foster care placement, as well as a comparison group of children who had records of Family Preservation Service, but no foster care. All subjects were born between 1982 and 1994 and they were followed for the present study through 2006. For research question 1, the foster care group was divided into those who had foster care only and those with both foster care and FPS. Propensity score methods were used to make the groups comparable. Survival analyses found that foster care placement is associated with increased risk of juvenile delinquency, runaway, and teen pregnancy. However, the likelihood of the problem behavior was fully or partially offset by having Family Centered Services. Survival analyses of research question 2 found that foster care characteristics, such as placement for other reasons in addition to prior maltreatment, being older at first entry into foster care, staying in therapeutic setting for the first and the last placement, higher number of placement changes, and high number of foster cares spell predicted increased risk of one or multiple types of problem behavior. The constellation of variables and foster care characteristics varied for different outcome behaviors with the exception that FCS appeared consistently associated with reduced risk.
