Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Blast Furnace Phenomena Still, the other question debated, be it borne in mind, is the economy of fuel in furnaces, whether charged into the furnace and consumed there, or supplied from without as caloric in the heated blast. Again, it is only when furnaces are working with the same, or nearly the same, charges of ore, flux, and fuel, i. E., same quality of raw materials, and yielding the same quality of iron, that we can get comparative results Of a reliable nature. Furnaces may be work ing in one district as well as in another, although using very different quantities of ore and fuel, and yielding very different quantities of iron, and Showing very different profit and loss accounts. Pig-iron making, like other manufactures, must be looked at both from the purely technical and the economical point of view. There is a technical maximum Of useful effect and an economical maximum of useful effect. The technical useful effect would be so much the greater as the yield of pig-iron from a given weight Of carbon and ores of the poorer qualities is greater. Book Blast Furnace Construction in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Blast Furnace Construction in America Classic Reprint written by Joseph Esrey Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blast-Furnace Construction in America This is in consequence of the great affinity of iron for oxygen, with which it will unite under almost all conditions of temperature and chemical environment found on the earth. This brings us to the fundamental fact in the metallurgy of iron which distinguishes it from all the other useful metals. Its only ores are its oxides. The sulphides are probably the most important ores of the other useful metals but sulphide of iron is not regarded primarily as an ore of iron but only as an ore of sulphur, partly because its sulphur value is greater than its iron value and partly because the blast furnace cannot produce good iron from material containing much sulphur. When the sulphur is burnt Off for conversion to sulphuric acid the iron takes up oxygen to replace the sulphur and becomes an oxide. These artificial oxides then become iron ores under certain conditions and with certain limitations which will be discussed later. But the use of iron sulphide as iron ore either by burning the sulphur off to waste, or directly in the furnace, as is so commonly done with the sulphides of other useful metals, is entirely unknown in the metallurgy of iron. Book The Principles Operation and Products of the Blast Furnace Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles Operation and Products of the Blast Furnace Classic Reprint written by J. E. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles Operation and Products of the Blast Furnace The rational subdivisions for a work on the blast furnace are: Construction, Principles, Operation and Product. Construction was treated in my recent book "Blast Furnace Construction in America." This volume treats of the last three subdivisions of the subject. The treatment of a subject from several different points of view involves a certain amount of repetition exactly as the mechanical engineer in making a drawing of a machine must show it on three planes of projection and must show some of the same parts in each view. The same conditions hold in presenting a complicated subject like the blast furnace. Any adequate treatment must show it from several points of view and a certain amount of repetition is not only inevitable but is desirable to drive home important considerations. The section on "Principles" might be called the theory of the blast furnace, but the word "theory" carries, to many minds, the unpleasant implication that it is something the opposite of practice, while it has been my greatest effort to develop a set of principles which should so thoroughly agree with practice that one would merge into the other, and that only an arbitrary dividing line could be drawn between them. The section on "Operation" may be criticized as inadequate to the vastness and importance of the subject, but the limitations of space must not be ignored. I have put into the chapters on operating difficulties a number of personal experiences which arc to some extent representative. Many other furnacemen have had experiences which I should like better to describe, but it is virtually impossible to obtain adequate descriptions of such experiences without living through them. It may be that some of my contentions in the section on "Products" will not be universally admitted for years to come, especially in regard to the effect of oxygen in cast iron, but the amount of proof available is so great that it has forced the acceptance of my conclusions by some of the highest authorities, and I confidently expect that others will follow. A chapter on "Commercial Considerations" is added at the close of the book, which I hope will be found to contain valuable information of a kind not usually given in technical books. I wish to acknowledge the help I have received in the form of facts and ideas from nearly all the furnacemen I have met. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blast Furnace and the Manufacture of Pig Iron: An Elementary Treatise for the Use of the Metallurgical Student and the Furnaceman The Fahrenheit scale and the British Thermal Unit have been given preference in the text, because they are more frequently encountered in engineering writings in English, and because data in those units are more readily obtained in this country. The ih sertion of Centigrade equivalents is more confusing than helpful, and the change, if desired, is readily made. Excerpt: ... 1*1 ATE RIALS -ORES CHAPTER II T is difficult to frame a definition which shall be absolutely accurate from all points of view, and furthermore, usage has much to do with the various terms employed, but in general iron ore is a compound of iron combined with certain elements. This compound is more or less intimately mixed with earthy impurities or gangue as it is called. In order to be an ore in the sense here used, the iron must be in sufficient quantities and in combination with such elements as shall permit its smelting on a commercially profitable basis. Although iron is one of the most widely distributed of the elements, it practically never occurs native or in the form of pure metallic iron, so great is its affinity for other elements. In general, the compounds of iron available for the blast furnace are the oxides, which include the three groups, the Hematites, the Brown Ores, and the Magnetites, these comprising more than 99% of the ore produced in this country, and the Carbonates, less than 1%. The above are given in the order of their importance. There is also the general division of all ores into two classes, i.e., Bessemer and nonBessemer or basic, dependent upon the content of phosphorus. This terminology comes from the fact that in the acid Bessemer method of making steel, no phosphorus is removed during the process. Hence, the pig iron from which the steel is made must have no greater quantity of phosphorus than will maintain the Bessemer limit, .1% phosphorus in the steel. Practically all the phosphorus in the ore goes into the pig iron. This usually means that a Bessemer ore must contain no more than .045% to .05% phosphorus, the limit being .001% phosphorusfor each per cent. of iron in the ore. Bessemer and non-Bessemer...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metallurgy of Cast Iron: A Complete Exposition of the Processes Involved in Its Treatment, Chemically and Physically, From the Blast Furnace Through the Foundry to the Testing Machine In compiling this volume, the author has been guided by a broad experience as a moulder and founder in loam, dry, and green sand work, in the various special ties Of founding, all of which require a knowledge of the subject as a whole in order to arrive at correct conclusions on questions pertaining to cast iron. A factor which 'has also aided the author in presenting this volume is that of being since 1892 surrounded, in his present foundry location, by blast furnaces, thus affording him every Opportunity Of making a close study of modern furnace methods and the principles involved in making iron. This has also enabled the author, as a foundryman, to determine wherein many principles involved in furnace practice can Often be well utilized in constructing and operating cupolas, as well as in mixing iron.
