Affective modes of communication are central to everyday discourse, yet psychotherapists have tended to marginalize their personal reactions to clients as idiosyncratic and subjective--or, worse, devalue them as intrusive, counterproductive, and unprofessional. This book is based on the premise that the affective states therapists experience when treating clients are frequently a consequence of interacting with clients who experience intense emotions and have problematic interpersonal behaviors. In addition to tracking their clients' affective states, therapists need to monitor and regulate their own affective reactions. If therapists fail to recognize such emotional reactions, or perceive them only as noise in the therapeutic process, they risk missing an important source of data that may directly or indirectly affect the therapeutic alliance and negatively influence treatment outcomes. By increasing their awareness of how clients throw them off balance, therapists are more likely to develop a more compassionate stance toward both their clients and themselves. With the exception of psychoanalytic work on countertransference, little has been written on the therapist's affective experience while conducting psychotherapy. This book adopts an integrative perspective, arguing that all therapists, regardless of orientation, are vulnerable to a wide range of problematic emotions, and all practitioners will increase their understanding of the process of psychotherapy by acknowledging how their reactions are an important source of clinical data"--Preface. For reasons that she cannot recall, the discussion had turned to the topic of "old-fashioned" ideas in psychology-perspectives and beliefs that had once enjoyed widespread support but that are now regarded as quaint curiosities. The students racked their brains to outdo one ofthe historical trivia of psychology: Le Bon's another with their knowledge fascination with the "group mind," Mesmer's theory of animal magnetism, the short-lived popularity of "moral therapy," Descartes' belief that erec tions are maintained by air from the lungs, and so on. When it came his tum to contribute to the discussion, one student brought up an enigmatic journal he had seen in the library stacks: the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology. He thought that the inclusion of abnormal and social psychology within the covers of a single journal seemed an odd combination, and he wondered aloud what sort of historical quirk had led psychologists of an earlier generation to regard these two fields as somehow related. Our colleague then asked her students if they had any ideas about how such an odd combination had found its way into a single journal.

A diplomate in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology, Kornreich has had extensive experience in clinical work and research supervision; he teaches in the psychology program of Brooklyn College, City University of New York.

Cupid aimed his first arrow at Daphne, a beautiful nymph who loved her freedom; the next struck Apollo, who lusted after Daphne. Daphne, frightened and intent upon virginity, fled Apollo but was unable to run fast enough. When her strength was almost gone, she sought protection in the familiar waters of her father's river. He answered her prayers: Her hair became leaves, and her feet, roots growing into the ground; she was transformed into a laurel tree. Apollo, kissing the sprouting bark, pledged to honor Daphne by placing a laurel wreath on the head of every hero who won a victory. Unable to evade the consequences of the arrow that wounded her, Daphne called upon the river, the creative power of both nature and time-a symbol of fertility, but also of oblivion-to help her survive when her strength was gone. Daphne's inner triumph in the face of injury is an appropriate sym bol for the types of transformation witnessed by psychologists. In his book on symbols, Circlot (1962, p. 173) writes that the crowning of the poet, artist, or conqueror with laurel leaves "presupposes a series of inner victories over the negative and dissipative influence of the basest forces. " Further, the tree "denotes the life of the cosmos: its consistence, growth, proliferation, generative, and regenerative processes" (Circlot, 1962, p. 328).
