This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minimum Health and Sanitation Standards in Schools Inasmuch as the union movement among teachers is characterized by a growing desire on the part of teachers to improve the conditions under which the work of teaching is carried on, the Teachers Union decided to go ahead with its plans. Accordingly, it was decided by the Union that the President should resign his position as teacher in a high school. The resignation was accepted January 3, 1921. The letter of resignation dated December 14, 1920, contains this statement quoted here to indicate the scope of the inquiry proposed: Among the conditions inquired into should be the following: The physical conditions, the conditions relative to ad ministration, the conditions relating to teaching. In addition, I believe it is important that studies be made of the quality of our ideals in relation to the prevailing schools of educational thought. In this connection, we should know the source of the moral, the' social, the civic and the professional inspiration of our teachers. The study of these conditions in relation to the product as shown in the output of our schools and in the quality of our citizenship should give us important leads for fundamental changes. Book Health Work in the Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Health Work in the Schools Classic Reprint written by Ernest Bryant Hoag and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Work in the Schools Educational hygiene has four chief divisions: (1) The Hygiene of Physical and Mental Growth; (2) Health Supervision in the Schools, including methods of health observation and teaching; (3) the Hygiene of Instruction; and (4) the Hygiene of the School Plant. The first of these divisions has been treated by one of the authors of this book in The Hygiene of the School Child, which has appeared as an earlier number of this Series, and the third, by the same author, is in preparation. The fourth division is to be covered by another author, and is also in preparation. The present volume deals with the problems in volved in health supervision, health examination, and hygiene teaching, in other words, with the second of the above divisions; and it is hoped that it will con tribute materially to the standardization of health supervision and to the broadening of its scope. Every one must realize that a great amount of what goes by the name of medical inspection of schools can be called health work only by courtesy. All along the line, among superintendents, teachers, school nurses, school boards, and even school doctors, education is needed which will lend a broader vision to the purpose and possibilities of genuine health supervision. Book The Health of the School Child Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Health of the School Child Classic Reprint written by W. Leslie Mackenzie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Health of the School Child The papers here reprinted are offered as a contribution to the practical side of the medical inspection of schools. In every civilised country the doctor and the school child are coming closer together. In Scotland, no less than in England, the interest is widespread and intense. This must be my apology for the present papers. The first paper was read at a Congress of sanitary administrators, official and unofficial. The second was read at a Congress of the Parents' National Union, where the majority were in a position to choose for their children the best education afforded by our present-day schools. The third was read before the Royal Society of Edinburgh, by whose kind permission it is now printed. On all three occasions, I found, as indeed in many places elsewhere in Scotland, that the Royal Commission on Physical Training (Scotland) and the Committee of Physical Deterioration had aroused the minds of every class of the community to the importance of personal hygiene in schools. The medical supervision of school children appeals to every class of the community. It is responded to by every class. It is no longer a topic for special pleaders. Book Health of School Children

Download or read book Health of School Children written by Luther Halsey Gulick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health of School Children: Statement of the Endeavors of the Board of Education to Conserve the Health of Children Under Its Care When one speaks of the schools of New York City, visions of great buildings containing thousands of children, situated in the congested parts of the city, come to mind. Public School 188, Man hattan, down on the lower East Side, has on its register 4, 363 pupils. Public School 84, Brooklyn, has on its register pupils. These enormous schools, embracing numbers equivalent to the population of a fair - sized village community, form, however, only one phase of the picture. Public School 121, Brooklyn, last winter had on its regis ter 36 pupils. The total number of principals, instructors, assistants, and the like was - one. Public School 7, Richmond, had 26 pupils on its roll; and in place of the 66 class-rooms in Public School 84, Brooklyn, it contained but one room, thus corresponding exactly to those village school buildings that have become so well known in the history of this country. Book School Health Administration Classic Reprint

Download or read book School Health Administration Classic Reprint written by Louis W. Rapeer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Health Administration In general, the thought is that before we can say what the public schools are or should be doing for individual and public health we must determine as accurately as possible with present-day statistics what the health needs and problems of individuals and the nation actually are, and how serious the health problem is, compared with other grave problems of life. The public school's share in the responsibilities for public health amelioration is very great, and growing, due to the lack or ineficiency of other insti tutions for such a purpose, to the admirable conditions of control in a state institution and with compulsory attend ance and general community support, and to the fact that such a large share of health mal-adjustment is due to health ignorance, and the lack of adequate health habits and ideals which it is so largely the special function of the public school to replace with positive health qualities. The princi pal problems of life, whatever they may be, and to be discovered only by a study of life through surveys or any other efficient means, furnish the problems of public edu cation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of School Hygiene What was then true of schools is still to a very large extent true. Schools are notably institutions for giving a rather narrow type of intel lectual memoriter training. Their houses have been erected on small plots of land little larger than is needed for the buildings themselves, and have not taken into consideration the importance of play and outd001 physical education; they have provided one or more class rooms in a building with seats screwed to the floor and arranged for sedentary book reading; they have provided teachers who to a large extent are unlearned in the physiological aspects of children and of education. In many cases, as very recent school health surveys are appallingly illustrating, they have failed to provide in this library-school room even the first ele ments of adequate sanitation and hygiene. Book The Laws of Health and School Hygiene

Download or read book The Laws of Health and School Hygiene written by Carstairs Cumming Douglas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Health, and School Hygiene: A Hand-Book on School Hygiene Some may object that the sections dealing with anatomy and physiology are too short. This abbrevia tion is intentional. There are already excellent small manuals dealing with physiology suitable for the teacher's needs, and what is wanted is a book treating of the application of physiological knowledge to the hygiene of school life. The tendency in lectures on the laws of health is to overburden them with purely anatomical and physiological details, and so obscure their real pur pose and lessen their value. In the original preparation of my lectures, I gained many useful hints from the excellent articles on the teaching of hygiene to teachers, which appeared in the British Medical Journal during 1904 - 1905. Use has been made of them once more in preparing this manual. Most of the illustrations have been furnished by my publishers. For No. 16 I am indebted to Messrs. E. 85 S. Book The Modern Health Crusade

Download or read book The Modern Health Crusade written by National Tuberculosis Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Health Crusade: A National Program of Health Instruction in Schools; Manual for Teachers, Superintendents and Health Workers When boys and girls, in all states of the Union and in foreign countries in three continents, take up the systematic performance of health chores, a phenomenon is presented that invites explanation. The health chores have of themselves no attraction for the average child; they are to him odious duties, performed only under social or parental pressure. Good reasons for doing hygienic duties are set forth attractively in the modern type of school text-book. N 0 set of facts to be learned in school has greater value, but usually the pupil fails to translate this knowledge into his own conduct except under outside influences. Education among us consists too much in telling and not enough in training. The Modern Health Crusade brings into the schools a distinct influence serving to reinforce established courses in hygiene, physiology, physical training and sanitation. It does not conflict with such courses but adds vitality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Health and Citizenship Education 1933 written by Juanita McDougald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health and Citizenship Education, 1933: A Suggested Procedure for Teaching Safety and First Aid Modern life has brought with its comforts a corresponding host of hazards which calls for the development of explicit instruction in safety. The teaching of safety habits, attitudes and information has produced gratifying results. A study of automobile fatalities for the whole country reveals an increase of 25% in deaths of adults and 7% in pre-school children, whereas there is a decrease of 10% for school children according to a statement issued by The Federal Commissioner of Education. A record of approximately accidental deaths and several million serious non-fatal injuries for the whole country, and the low ranking of North Carolina in motor vehicle accident control among neighboring states, presents, however, a problem to be reckoned with. The problem of safety is largely a matter of controlling human con duct. The school is the organized institution which the state maintains to teach those things which have been pronounced essential to happy and effective living to help in the development of proper self-control or self direction.
