Book A Study of Resiliency in African American Middle School Boys

Download or read book A Study of Resiliency in African American Middle School Boys written by Andrea Celico and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While our nation claims that we provide "equal learning opportunities" for all, the Black-White achievement gap still exists. This leads to a variety of political, economic, and social ramifications for our students. With this said, seldom are studies conducted that disprove the countless theories that explain why African-American students are at-risk for academic success. As an attempt to determine environmental factors that contribute to the achievement gap between African-American and Caucasian students, it is important to gain a greater understanding of how academically successful African-American students have managed to translate their struggles and experiences of oppression into academic success (Griffin & Allen, 2006). Resiliency and risk have been studied for more than 40 years. Many African-American students succeed in school despite living in single-parent, impoverished families. Some African-American students from this background successfully emerge from high risk environments, coping and overcoming dire circumstances (Floyd, 1997). Children living in single-parent families (particularly those mother-headed) are at a greater risk for negative outcomes than those in two-headed families (Brody & Murry, 1999). In this study, the experiences of 13 academically successful sixth through eighth grade African-American boys living in single parent, impoverished homes in an urban school district in the Midwest were explored. Through demographic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, the self-reported factors as contributing to the students' academic success were identified. Th e answers to the following research question were explored: What experiences (at home, in their peer community, and at school) do academically successful African-American middle-school boys living in single parent, impoverished homes report as contributing to their academic success? In this qualitative study, the students reported a number of factors as contributing to their academic success. Grounded theory and the constant comparison methodology were used to obtain the findings and identify domains. They included: strategies for success, future orientation, motivating factors, homework, access to resources at home and in the community, and relationship with mother. In formation from this study can be used to help educators analyze and examine current educational practices that are in place and re-think ways to meet the emotional and environmental needs of the students they serve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we fix the leaky educational pipeline into a conduit of success for Black males? That the issue is critical is demonstrated by the statistics that only 10% of Black males in the United States are proficient in 8th grade reading, only 52% graduate from high school within four years, and only 35 percent graduate from college. This book uniquely examines the trajectory of Black males through the educational pipeline from pre-school through college. In doing so it not only contributes significantly to the scholarship on the experiences of this population, but bridges the gap between theory and practice to provide frameworks and models that will improve these young men’s educational outcomes throughout their educational journeys.A compelling feature of the book is that that it does not treat Black males as homogeneous, but recognizes the diversity that exists among Black males in various educational settings. It demonstrates the need to recognize students’ intersectionalities and individual characteristics as an essential preliminary to developing practices to improve outcomes at every educational stage.Throughout, the contributing authors also focus on the strategies and experiences of Black males who achieve academic excellence, examining growth-producing and asset-based practices that can be sustained, and that build upon the recognition that these males have agency and possess qualities such as resilience that are essential to their learning and development. The frameworks and models that conclude each chapter are equally commendable to K–12 educators and administrators; higher education faculty, student affairs practitioners, and administrators; and policymakers, for whom templates are provided for rectifying the continuing inequities of our educational system.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine if patterns exist among at risk African American male students who defy the odds. This study focuses on at risk African American male students whose circumstances made it likely that they would fail in school. Yet in spite of adverse life conditions, these students exhibited outstanding academic performance. This study also examines why some at risk African American male students flourish in spite of environmental disadvantages. Additionally, the study explores the factors that influence resiliency development, which contribute to our capacity for designing interventions that will enhance student outcomes. The present study identified characteristics of resilient African American adolescents such as social competence, problem-solving skills, autonomy and a sense of purpose and future. A network of high achieving friends was characteristic of these African American male students. In addition, these successful students supported the concept of grouping in honors and advanced classes, had supportive adults in their lives, and participated in multiple extracurricular activities. As a means of dealing with social and academic pressures, they assumed bicultural identities and had interracial peer support systems. They also maintained peer and adult networks with which they shared their daily struggles. In addition, these resilient youth had a positive attitude towards school and embraced an achievement ideology. Besides these, resilient African American males exhibited temperamental characteristics that elicit positive responses from people who were around them. Such traits begin in early childhood and include a child who is affectionate, good-natured, and sociable. These successful African American male students were actively involved in extracurricular activities, such as hobbies, sports, school auxiliaries, or creative interests.

Book From the Backstreets to the High Road

Download or read book From the Backstreets to the High Road written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inordinate numbers of Black men come of age in the urban enclave of "the 'hood," exposed to drugs, street culture, and violence. Many die young, die brutally, die needlessly. Much research has focused on the ethnography and pathology of drug culture and the efficacy of treatment approaches. Few studies, however, have looked at resiliency factors among African American males who have transcended drug-centered lifestyles to become respected citizens and contributors to their communities. This in-depth case study of a 59-year-old African American man identified resiliency themes that might be generally applicable to addicted Black men. It highlights the remarkable personality transformations that sometimes occur with abstinence-based programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).The study elicited a phenomenological understanding of factors that may have influenced Terrell's transformation, to illuminate factors likely to lead to success in recovery for African American male substance abusers. Resiliency themes identified were significant early relationships; support of extended family; closeness with a "core" of immediate family; warm childhood memories; family, cultural, and ethnic pride; spiritual roots; artistic talent and interests; early leadership experiences; strong work ethic; meaningful social networks; commitment to volunteer work; and personality characteristics such as congeniality, charm, positive attitude, curiosity, intelligence, self-confidence, ambition, and "adoptability" (Rubin, 1996).Results of the study support the need for Afrocentric approaches to the treatment of addicted Black men. Educational interventions could help Black men develop cultural knowledge and build a healthy bicultural identity, as Americans and African Americans. Black manhood training programs, rites-of-passage programs geared toward men with delayed social development resulting from addiction, and mentorship programs also could help Black men develop needed competencies. A sociopolitical-spiritual approach to recovery is suggested. Future studies could be geared toward designing, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of creative Afrocentric approaches to treatment and prevention. Studies also could explore whether there is a "culture of resiliency" within family or social networks that heightens the chances that people afforded certain early-life exposures will eventually beat the odds and overcome difficult life circumstances.

Volume Four: Genes and Environment focuses on the interplay between nature and nurture throughout the life stages, and the ways in which a child's environment can influence his or her physical and mental health as an adult. The discussion explores relationships with family, friends, and the community; environmental factors like poverty, violence, and social support; the development of coping mechanisms, and more, including the impact of these factors on physical brain development. This new third edition has been fully updated to incorporate the latest advances, and to better reflect the increasingly multilevel and interdisciplinary nature of the field and the growing importance of translational research. The relevance of classification in a developmental context is also addressed, including DSM-5 criteria and definitions. Advances in developmental psychopathology are occurring increasingly quickly as expanding theoretical and empirical work brings about dramatic gains in the multiple domains of child and adult development. This book brings you up to date on the latest developments surrounding genetics and environmental influence, including their intersection in experience-dependent brain development. Understand the impact of childhood adversity on adulthood health Gauge the effects of violence, poverty, interparental conflict, and more Learn how peer, family, and community relationships drive development Examine developments in prevention science and future research priorities Developmental psychopathology is necessarily interdisciplinary, as development arises from a dynamic interplay between psychological, genetic, social, cognitive, emotional, and cultural factors.
