Book Clarinet Concerto in C Minor Op 36

Download or read book Clarinet Concerto in C Minor Op 36 written by Philipp Jakob Riotte and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early years of the nineteenth century saw wide-ranging developments to the mechanics and acoustics of the Classical clarinet. The Russian virtuoso clarinetist, composer, and instrument designer Iwan Müller brought about some of the most important innovations in clarinet design. His “clarinet omnitonique,” a thirteen-keyed instrument, was radical in that it would be able to play comfortably in all tonalities, dispensing with the need for the family of clarinets pitched in different keys. For a prototype of this “nouvelle clarinet”—a collaboration between Müller and the noted Viennese maker, Johann Merklein—the German composer Philipp Jakob Riotte (1776–1856) wrote a virtuosic concerto. This premiered in Vienna in the autumn of 1809. Published in 1818, and previously thought to be lost, Riotte’s op. 36 for the prototype “clarinet omnitonique” displays a diverse palette of keys, extreme registral contrasts, and chromatic writing for clarinet, which were clearly facets of Müller’s playing enabled by his new instrument. The work enhances our understanding of the development and deployment of the “clarinet omnitonique” within the concerto genre in the early nineteenth century. It serves also to reinstate the important relationship between Müller, Riotte, and Merklein.

Book Ticheli s Clarinet Concerto as a Contribution To and Standard In the Repertory

Download or read book Ticheli s Clarinet Concerto as a Contribution To and Standard In the Repertory written by David Ray Brigle and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composer Frank Ticheli longed for many years to write a concerto for clarinet. The opportunity finally presented itself in 2010 when Swedish American clarinetist Hakan Rosengren offered a commission to write a concerto. Ticheli was impressed by Rosengren’s virtuosity and “poignantly beautiful sound,” directly influencing Ticheli’s compositional style of the piece. Ticheli gives tribute to three renowned contemporary composers of the twentieth century in his clarinet concerto: George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, and Leonard Bernstein. His inspiration derives from the various elements and creative musical styles of these composers, from Copland’s distinct lyricism and Gershwin’s use of jazz to Bernstein’s passionate enthusiasm effectuated by hyperactive technical facility and accents of sultry motifs. Out of the vast number of concerti written for the clarinet, some of the most well-known concerti include the Concerto for Clarinet K.622 (1791) by W.A. Mozart, Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra Op.57 (1928) by Carl Nielsen, and Clarinet Concerto (1948) by Aaron Copland among others. The clarinet community considers these works to be staples in the literature. Mainstream literature may be classified as such by the following criteria: the popularity of the work as demonstrated by the number of recordings and performances, overall musical expression, academic potential, and unique technical requirements. Since Ticheli’s clarinet concerto was composed recently (2010), it is presently difficult to predict the role this work may play in the future of mainstream clarinet repertoire. While some consider the work already a staple of clarinet literature, further research into the history of existing repertoire may provide insight into the future relevance of this new concerto. To narrow the scope, extra focus will be given to a popular contemporary concerto for nearly a century, Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto, Op.57 (1928). Nielsen’s concerto is one of the most well-known in the clarinet world, almost as much as Mozart’s concerto. During its composition, Nielsen pursued unique modernism by taking stylistic liberties which stand out greatly from other clarinet concerti composed even to this day. The concerti of Nielsen and Ticheli require a unique skill set by the performer, ranging from complex technical prowess to deep musical expression. The following document will provide an extensive history of these concerti and their respective composers. Further it will define a proper framework for determining mainstream repertoire for the clarinet. Finally, evidence will be provided from well-known compositions to support the possible inclusion of Ticheli’s Clarinet Concerto into the mainstream literature.

Book Clarinet Concertos Nos 1 and 2 in Full Score

Download or read book Clarinet Concertos Nos 1 and 2 in Full Score written by Carl Maria von Weber and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These popular clarinet concertos, both written in 1811, follow in the classical tradition of Mozart while showcasing the instrument's new technical possibilities. They arose from the fortunate introduction of composer Carl Maria von Weber to one of the era's greatest clarinetists, Heinrich Joseph Baermann. Excited by the performer's virtuosity, von Weber created these two works, which have since become cornerstones of the clarinet repertoire. In the Concerto No. 1 in F Minor, Op. 73, the solo clarinetist has the opportunity to range over the instrument's entire compass, with brilliant runs, leaps, and passagework. The Concerto No. 2 in E-flat Major, Op. 74, features a long first movement with considerable development, a spellbinding "Barcarolle" second movement, and a sparkling final "Polacca". These two works appear here in full score and for the first time in a single volume, offering insightful delights for performers and listeners alike.

  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2008-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300102826
  • Pages : 426 pages

Download or read book The Clarinet written by Eric Hoeprich and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clarinet has a long and rich history as a solo, orchestral, and chamber musical instrument. In this broad-ranging account Eric Hoeprich, a performer, teacher, and expert on historical clarinets, explores its development, repertoire, and performance history. Looking at the antecedents of the clarinet, as well as such related instruments as the chalumeau, basset horn, alto clarinet, and bass clarinet, Hoeprich explains the use and development of the instrument in the Baroque age. The period from the late 1700s to Beethoven's early years is shown to have fostered ever wider distribution and use of the instrument, and a repertoire of increasing richness. The first half of the nineteenth century, a golden age for the clarinet, brought innovation in construction and great virtuosity in performance, while the following century and a half produced a surge in new works from many composers. The author also devotes a chapter to the role of the clarinet in bands, folk music, and jazz.
