Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic progress has been made in all branches of physics since the National Research Council's 1986 decadal survey of the field. The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.

Book Study of Baryon Stopping Pion and Proton Production from 4 9 GeV Al Au Fixed target Collisions at STAR

This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the goals of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) Beam Energy Scan program is to explore whether signatures of the quark-gluon plasma can be turned off, search for a potential Quantum-Chromodynamic (QCD) critical point, as well as identify the phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter. This program ran from the years 2010 through 2014 and certain observables such as the directed flow of protons and higher moments of net-protons show features that may suggest some sort of transition to hadron-dominated matter below 20 GeV. The Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) Fixed-Target program was created to extend center of mass energies below [square root sNN]= 7.7 GeV, down to [square root sNN]= 3.0 GeV, as these energies are not practical to do with colliding beams at RHIC. This will be crucial in the second phase of the Beam Energy Scan program, BES-II, as data from energies within this range may yield information of the phase transition. The capabilities of reconstructing interactions with a fixed-target geometry needed to be demonstrated for the future of the program in BES-II. In 2015, two test runs with a fixed-target geometry were done with the STAR detector; the first was Au + Au at [square root sNN] = 4.5 GeV and the second, a month later, was Al + Au at [square root sNN] = 4.9 GeV center-of-mass energy. This dissertation focuses on the asymmetric Al + Au collisions but will involve mentions of the Au + Au run. In this work, the spectra and rapidity density of [pi]− and p are measured at the top 0-5%, 5-10%, 10-15%, 15-20%, 20-25%, and 25-30% most central collisions. In addition, the "stopping" for protons will be discussed.

Book Particle Physics Perspectives And Opportunities Report Of The Dpf Committee On Long term Planning

Download or read book Particle Physics Perspectives And Opportunities Report Of The Dpf Committee On Long term Planning written by Robert N Cahn and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-09-20 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a broad-based and in-depth study of high energy physics commissioned by the Executive Committee of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. This year-long study was initiated in the early 1994, in the wake of the cancellation of the SSC, and is meant to complement the report of the Drell HEPAP subpanel, charged with providing a vision for the future of the field. The DPF study of high energy physics was organized on the basis of the working groups, each led by a number of co-conveners chosen among established leaders in the various subspecialties in the field. These conveners, in turn, organized their working groups by inviting other active workers in the discipline to participate and gathered further input from the community by holding a variety of specialized meetings and workshops. This book contains the final reports of the 11 working groups assembled for the study, along with an extended overview and executive summary by the editors.

Book Fragmentation of Quark and Gluon Jets in Proton antiproton Collisions at Center of mass Energy of 1 8 TeV

Download or read book Fragmentation of Quark and Gluon Jets in Proton antiproton Collisions at Center of mass Energy of 1 8 TeV written by Alexandre P. Pronko and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: We report the first model independent measurement of charged particle multiplicities in quark and gluon jets, Nq_ and Ng_, produced at the Tevatron in proton-antiproton collisions with center-of-mass energy 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measurements are made for jets with average energies 41 and 53 GeV by counting charged particle tracks in cones with opening angle of thetac_=0.28, 0.36, and 0.47 rad around the jet axis. The corresponding jet hardness Q=Ej_et*thetac_ varies in the range from 12 GeV to 25 GeV. At Q=19.2 GeV, the ratio of multiplicities r=Ng_/Nq_ is found to be 1.64"0.17, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are added in quadrature. The results are in agreement with re-summed perturbative QCD calculations and are consistent with recent ee− measurements.

Book Studies of CP Violation in Charmless Three Body b Hadron Decays

Download or read book Studies of CP Violation in Charmless Three Body b Hadron Decays written by Daniel O'Hanlon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights two essential analyses of data collected during the LHCb experiment, based on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The first comprises the first observation and studies of matter-antimatter asymmetries in two three-body b-baryon decays, paving the way for more precise measurements of the relatively unknown decay properties of b-baryon decays. The second is an analysis of a charged B meson decay to three charged pions, where previously large matter-antimatter asymmetries were observed in a model-independent analysis. Here a model of the decay amplitude is constructed using the unitarity-conserving ‘K-matrix’ model for the scalar contributions, so as to gain an understanding of how the previously observed matter-antimatter asymmetries arise; further, the model’s construction yields the most precise and comprehensive study of this decay mode to date.

Book Measurement of the Inclusive Jet Cross Section with the ATLAS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider

Download or read book Measurement of the Inclusive Jet Cross Section with the ATLAS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider written by Caterina Doglioni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-28 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests of the current understanding of physics at the highest energies achievable in man-made experiments are performed at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. In the theory of the strong force within the Standard Model of particle physics - Quantum ChromoDynamics or QCD - confined quarks and gluons from the proton-proton scattering manifest themselves as groups of collimated particles. These particles are clustered into physically measurable objects called hadronic jets. As jets are widely produced at hadron colliders, they are the key physics objects for an early "rediscovery of QCD". This thesis presents the first jet measurement from the ATLAS Collaboration at the LHC and confronts the experimental challenges of precision measurements. Inclusive jet cross section data are then used to improve the knowledge of the momentum distribution of quarks and gluons within the proton and of the magnitude of the strong force.
