Book The Relationship Between Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors and Superintendent Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Relationship Between Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors and Superintendent Job Satisfaction written by Cheryl L. Floyd and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to test theoretical assumptions about the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic factors and job satisfaction. Surveys were sent electronically to superintendents (N = 450) to determine the level of superintendent agreement with items pertaining to general job satisfaction, items pertaining to intrinsic factors, and items pertaining to extrinsic factors. Survey questions were modeled after modified versions of two well-established instruments used to measure job satisfaction. Literature-based items were created to measure intrinsic and extrinsic job characteristics. The relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic factors and superintendent job satisfaction was analyzed using a multiple regression analysis. The multiple regression analysis revealed that: (a) the linear combination of intrinsic factors was related to job satisfaction, (b) the linear combination of extrinsic factors was related to job satisfaction, and (c) the linear combination of both intrinsic and extrinsic subscores was related to job satisfaction; furthermore, superintendent respondents indicated that extrinsic factors were more important to them than intrinsic factors. Factor analysis was used to identify underlying constructs of the 24 indicators on the survey. Three factors (satisfaction, intrinsic, and extrinsic) were identified. Demographic variables (gender, age, ethnicity, total years of experience as a superintendent, total years in current district, and enrollment) did not relate to superintendent job satisfaction. This study supports the results of the study conducted by Malanowski (1999) regarding job satisfaction of urban superintendents in New Jersey. Malanowski found superintendents had a high level of general job satisfaction, and they were intrinsically and extrinsically satisfied. In contrast, this study disputes the findings of the study of South Dakota superintendents conducted by Palleria (2000). Although Palleria found that the superintendents were satisfied with their jobs, he reported that the superintendents were more satisfied with the intrinsic factors than the extrinsic factors. This study supported the theoretical perspective that reinforcers inherent in the work itself as well as those that are extrinsic to the job are each potent predictors of job satisfaction. Individually, intrinsic and extrinsic domains each explain variation in job satisfaction. Further, personal demographics did not impact job satisfaction.

Book Job Satisfaction and Stress Among Missouri Public School Superintendents

Download or read book Job Satisfaction and Stress Among Missouri Public School Superintendents written by Frank Rowles and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine which job-related activities are most or least stressful. The perceptions are those of current public school superintendents in the state of Missouri for the 2007-2008 school year. The study also explored: (a) superintendents perceptions of overall stress and overall job satisfaction and (b) if stress or job satisfaction is associated with changing employment or early retirement. Superintendents in 175 of the 524 Missouri public school districts completed a web-based survey. The superintendents answered a 31 question survey instrument about their perceptions concerning the amount of stress associated with various tasks and duties of the superintenedency. The major findings of the study were: (a) respondents rated as their most stressful job related activity "federal and state mandates". Also rating as moderately stressful activities were "frustration of under-funded mandates," "political nature of the job," "public pressure/accountability," "lack of financial resources," "dealing with school finances/budget," and "too many insignificant demands". Superintendents agreed that their jobs are moderately stressful but also rated their job satisfaction as being in the "high" category. They also had "high" agreement to the statement that if they were given the chance to do it all over again, they would again choose a career as superintendent.

Book Correlates of Job Satisfaction Among Mid level TRIO Program Administrators in the Mid eastern Region of the United States

Download or read book Correlates of Job Satisfaction Among Mid level TRIO Program Administrators in the Mid eastern Region of the United States written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined factors that contribute to job satisfaction among directors working for federally funded TRIO programs at colleges and universities in the mid-eastern region of the United States. Both independent and dependent variables were considered in this study. The independent variables were the demographic and institutional factors and the dependent variables were the intrinsic, extrinsic and general job satisfaction factors. The conceptual framework for this study was based on Dawis and Lofquist's Theory of Work Adjustment . This study utilized the 1967 long-form version of the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) to measure the dependent variable of job satisfaction. This self-administered instrument is composed of 100 items which are work-related statements developed to test employees' satisfaction or dissatisfaction with their jobs. Demographic data were collected through the use of a researcher designed data form. A total of 238 useable surveys were returned from directors of TRIO programs working in federal regions II, III, V and VII. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, content analysis, Independent Samples t -Test, and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). This study presented evidence that directors' satisfaction is influenced more by intrinsic factors than by extrinsic factors. The findings in this study indicated that respondents were most satisfied with the job related intrinsic factors of social service, moral values, achievement, creativity, and responsibility. They were least satisfied with the extrinsic factors of institutional policies and practices, compensation and advancement. The results indicated that there were significant relationships between the following independent and dependent variables: race/ethnicity and the social service facet; regional location and the advancement facet; and institution type (two-year/four-year) and the social service facet. This study further revealed that the participants in this study were generally satisfied with their positions. Recommendations for mid-level administrators, institutions, human resource development professionals, policymakers, and researchers were suggested.
