Book A Study of NCAA Division I Athletes on the Use and the Effects of Combining Alcohol Energy Drinks

Download or read book A Study of NCAA Division I Athletes on the Use and the Effects of Combining Alcohol Energy Drinks written by Conrad L. Woolsey and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three main purposes of this study were (a) to determine the quantity-frequency rates of alcohol use, combined use (using an energy drink within plus or minus four hours of consuming alcohol), and energy drink use in a population of D-I athletes, (b) to compare reported risk taking behaviors and negative health consequences within combined users (n = 132), and (c) to investigate differences between men and women on reported risk taking behaviors. A total of 401 student athletes from a large Division I university participated in the study. From the complete Quick Drink Screen (QDS) sample of 401 athletes, 315 or 78.55% used alcohol, 150 or 37.41% combined, and 194 or 48.62% used energy drinks within the past year. Results indicated that combined users consumed significantly more alcohol than athletes that used alcohol only. However, combined users consumed nearly double the amount of alcohol when they did not combine energy drinks with alcohol. Yet, results of the Brief Comprehensive Effects of Alcohol (B-CEOA) and Combined Use (B-CEOCU) expectancy measures still indicated that when athletes combined they took significantly more risks and experienced significantly more negative consequences. Results also indicated that men took significantly more risks than women while drinking alcohol only and combining.

Book Acute Effects of AdvoCare Spark Energy Drink on Repeated Sprint Performance and Anaerobic Power in NCAA Division I Football Players

Download or read book Acute Effects of AdvoCare Spark Energy Drink on Repeated Sprint Performance and Anaerobic Power in NCAA Division I Football Players written by Nnamdi Ifekandu Gwacham and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumption of supplements and energy drinks is common among athletes; however, there is a lack of research on the efficacy of energy drink consumption before and during short-duration, intense exercise. The purpose of this research was to investigate the acute effects of a low-calorie, caffeine-taurine, energy drink (AdvoCare Spark®) on repeated sprint performance and anaerobic power in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I football players. Twenty well-trained Division I football players (age: 19.7 [plus or minus] 1.8 years, height: 184.9 [plus or minus] 5.3 cm, weight: 100.3 [plus or minus] 21.7 kg) participated in a double-blind, randomized crossover study in which they received the energy drink or an isoenergetic, isovolumetric, noncaffeinated placebo. The two trials were separated by 7 days. The Running Based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST), consisting of six 35-m sprints with 10 s of rest between each sprint, was used to assess anaerobic power. Sprint times were recorded with an automatic electronic timer. On average, there was no statistically significant difference between the placebo (15.06 [plus or minus] 3.80 W·s-1) and beverage (15.3 [plus or minus] 4.18 W·s-1) measurements of fatigue index. Neither were there statistically significant main effects of the beverage treatment on power F(1, 18) = 3.84, p = 0.066; or sprint time F(1, 18) = 3.06, p = 0.097. However, there was a significant interaction effect between caffeine use and the beverage for sprint times (F = 4.62, p = 0.045), as well as for anaerobic power (F = 5.40, p = 0.032), indicating a confounding effect. In conclusion, a caffeine-taurine energy drink did not improve the sprint performance or the anaerobic power of collegiate football players, but the level of caffeine use by the athletes likely influenced the effect of the drink.

The purpose of this study was to determine energy drink consumption patterns among college students, prevalence and frequency of energy drink use for six situations, namely for insufficient sleep, to increase energy (in general), while studying, driving long periods of time, drinking with alcohol while partying, and to treat a hangover, and prevalence of adverse side effects and energy drink use dose effects among college energy drink users. Proceeds from the sale of this book go to the support of an elderly disabled person.

Book Examining How Ethnicity and Country of Origin Relate to Collegiate Student Athletes Alcohol Use

Download or read book Examining How Ethnicity and Country of Origin Relate to Collegiate Student Athletes Alcohol Use written by Jennifer Nicole Forse and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been well researched that college student alcohol use is a public health concern and that college students as a general population are at risk for excessive alcohol use and binge drinking. Within the wide population of college students, student-athletes are at a particularly high risk for excessive alcohol consumption. Collegiate student-athletes have been found to be more likely than their peers to report alcohol-related negative consequences. In studying why athletes drink more than their peers, collegiate student-athlete alcohol research purports that motives for alcohol use stem from both general and sport-related motives. Social norms research, particularly descriptive and injunctive norms, has also been used to explain alcohol use habits in college students and student-athletes. Alcohol use is also strongly influenced by cultural norms and beliefs that one may develop in their country of origin. No research currently exists that studies how domestic and international student-athletes differ in alcohol use trends. The current study intends to bridge gaps in the literature by investigating alcohol use among international and domestic student-athletes and the resulting relationship between factors such as alcohol consumption, drinking motives, negative consequences of alcohol use, and a student-athlete's country of origin. It was hypothesized that student-athletes from the United States would report significantly different alcohol use behaviors than their International counterparts. NCAA student-athletes (n = 1330) completed an online questionnaire that included a demographics survey, country of origin questions, social norms perceptions questions, alcohol use questions, Athlete Drinking Scale, Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised, and Rutger's Alcohol Problem Index. Multiple MANCOVA analyses were run to examine differences in alcohol use behaviors between the three pairs of independent variables while controlling for gender and age. Analyses revealed significant effects for country of origin on student-athletes perceived injunctive norms and sport-related drinking motives. Specifically, international student-athletes perceived that friends from their country of origin approve of binge drinking more than United States student-athletes perceived their friends approve of binge drinking. Also, United States student-athletes endorsed all sport-related drinking motives more than international student-athletes endorsed the same motives, meaning that American student-athletes are more motivated to drink alcohol due to sport-related drinking motives than in international student-athletes are motivated to drink due to sport-related drinking motives.

Book The Palgrave Handbook of Psychological Perspectives on Alcohol Consumption

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Psychological Perspectives on Alcohol Consumption written by Richard Cooke and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook provides a broad and comprehensive overview of psychological research on alcohol consumption. It explores the psychological theories underpinning alcohol use and misuse, discusses the interventions that can be designed around these theories, and offers key insight into future developments within the field. A range of international experts assess the unique factors that contribute to alcohol-related behaviour as differentiated from other health-related behaviours. They cover the theory and context of alcohol consumption, including possible implications of personality type, motivation and self-regulation, and cultural and demographic factors. After reviewing the evidence for psychological theories and predictors as accounts for alcohol consumption, the book goes on to focus on external influences on consumption and interventions for reducing alcohol consumption, including those based on purchasing and consumption behaviour, technologies such as personalised feedback apps, and social and media phenomena such as “Dry January” and “Hello Sunday Morning”. It brings together cutting-edge contemporary research on alcohol consumption in childhood and adolescence, including topics such as managing offers or drinks, “pre-drinking”, online identities, how children develop their beliefs about alcohol and how adolescents discuss alcohol with their parents. The book also offers a rounded presentation of the tensions involved in debates around the psychological impacts of alcohol use, discussing its role in helping people to socialise and unwind; as well as recognising the possible negative impacts on health, education and relationships. This book will be of interest to academics, policymakers, public health officials, practitioners, charities and other stakeholders interested in understanding how alcohol affects people psychologically. This book will also be a key resource for students and researchers from across the social sciences.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to investigate male college athlete's perceptions of alcohol and drugs, attitudes toward alcohol and drugs, self-reported alcohol and drug related consequences, and self-reported amount of alcohol consumption on their respective college campuses. Two hundred and ten male college football and basketball players from two Midwestern universities were surveyed. A total response rate of 81.4% was the initial return rate for this study; however 6.7% of the individuals did not complete the survey correctly so the effective return rate was 74.8%. Analysis of the data was completed through the use of independent samples t-test, Chi-Square analysis, and descriptive statistics. The research questions were evaluated at .05 alpha levels. Additionally the Bonferroni technique was utilized to yield a corrected alpha level. This technique was utilized in order to control for the effects of multiple comparisons on the same data set. There was a significant difference found between male college football and basketball players on their perceptions of alcohol use. Male football athletes perceived that other students consume alcohol in higher amounts. No significant difference was found between male college football and basketball player as it related to their perception of marijuana and illicit drug use. No significant difference was found between male college football and basketball players on their attitude toward alcohol and marijuana use. The majority of male college basketball and football players reported that use of illicit drugs is unacceptable. Further, no significant difference was found between male college football and basketball players on their self-reported alcohol and drug related consequences. A significant difference was found between male college football and basketball players. Male college football players reported consuming alcohol in greater quantities. Findings from this study suggest that male college football players consume more alcohol than male college basketball players. Moreover, this study suggests that male college football players perceived that other students consume alcohol in higher amounts when compared to male college basketball players.

Book The Effects of Energy Drinks on Division 1 Soccer Midfielders

Download or read book The Effects of Energy Drinks on Division 1 Soccer Midfielders written by Jordan D. Vitale and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caffeine is a popular ergogenic aid that is commonly used in young athletes to improve performance. Energy drinks are just one of the many ways to consume caffeine. There have been mixed results about whether or not caffeine actually improves different types of exercise performance. The studies that do exist focus primarily on the effects that caffeine has on males. There is very little research on the effects of caffeine on females, especially during anaerobic exercise. The purpose of this study is to expand the known effects that energy drinks have on anaerobic exercise performance and explore a new population of female soccer midfielders through the use of a Wingate test. A total of 10 participants were chosen from a division I collegiate women’s soccer team and were asked to volunteer in the study. Each participant was informed of testing protocol and expectations before agreeing to participate and signing a consent form. Peak power and rate of fatigue was the main focus of the study. All of the data was analyzed through the use of an independent t-test to discover the relationship between energy drink consumption and peak power, and energy drink consumption and rate of fatigue. It is hypothesized that the consumption of an energy drink prior to a Wingate anaerobic test would result in overall better anaerobic performance, specifically with increased power and a lower fatigue index.

Book Do Drinking Motives Mediate the Relationship Between Co occurring Alcohol and Energy Drink Use and Alcohol Consequences

Download or read book Do Drinking Motives Mediate the Relationship Between Co occurring Alcohol and Energy Drink Use and Alcohol Consequences written by Daniel DiPerna and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining alcohol and energy drinks has been an increasing problem on college campuses. Research suggests that alcohol/ energy drink use (AmED) is associated with increased alcohol-related consequences. Although there appears to be an association between AmED use and increased alcohol consequences, little research has been done about the nature of this relationship. The current study expands the understanding of the relationship between AmED use and alcohol-related consequences by looking at the influence of drinking motives while controlling for independent contributions from other risky drinking practices such as pregaming and drinking games.

Book Alcohol Nutrition and Health Consequences

Download or read book Alcohol Nutrition and Health Consequences written by Ronald Ross Watson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic alcohol use is associated with heart, liver, brain, and other organ pathology. Alcohol is a drug of abuse and a caloric food and it causes poor intake and absorption of nutrients, thus playing a major role in many aspects of clinical consequences. Alcohol use lowers consumption of fruit and vegetables, lowers tissue nutrients, and, in some cases, requires nutritional therapy by clinicians. Alcohol, Nutrition, and Health Consequences will help the clinician define the causes and types of nutritional changes due to alcohol use and also explain how nutrition can be used to ameliorate its consequences. Chapters present the application of current nutritional knowledge by physicians and dietitians. Specific areas involving alcohol-related damage due to nutritional changes are reviewed, including heart disease, obesity, digestive tract cancers, lactation, brain function, and liver disease. In addition, alcohol’s effects on absorption of minerals and nutrients, a key role in causing damage are treated. The importance of diet in modifying alcohol and its metabolite damage is also explained. Alcohol, Nutrition, and Health Consequences is essential reading for alcohol therapists and researchers as well as primary care physicians and dietitians and is an easy reference to help the clinician, student, and dietitian comprehend the complex changes caused by direct and indirect effects of ethanol at the cellular level via its nutritional modification.

Book Energy Drink Expectancies Among College Students

Download or read book Energy Drink Expectancies Among College Students written by Aaron C. Luneke and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Energy drinks are part of a growing industry that targets the college population, among others, with aggressive marketing tactics, by promoting greater focus and more energy with their product consumption. Energy drinks are associated with a multitude of consequences, including emergency room visits and hospitalization. Additionally, they are linked with heavy drinking, poor academic outcomes, and drug use. The research on the consequences and behaviors associated with the mixing of alcohol and energy drinks and college students (AmEDs) is widespread; however, to date, a comprehensive literature review on the topic does not exist. Another gap in literature is the lack of information on the expectancies college students have regarding the consumption of energy drinks and how that impacts their use. Both of the aforementioned issues are the subject matter of this dissertation. Purpose: This alternative dissertation includes two separate studies. The first study was a systematic literature review, which was completed with the purpose of summarizing and identifying the gaps in literature regarding energy drinks and their use with alcohol among college students. The second study was a result of the first, where there was an evident gap in the literature, as there were no data on the energy drink expectancies of college students. Therefore, the purpose of the second study was to explore the energy drink expectancies of college students. Methods: (Study 1) The systematic literature review was completed using multiple academic search engines, including Academic Search Complete, ERIC, Medline, PsychInfo, PubMed, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Google Scholar databases. The article inclusion criteria were that the topical focus was on AmED consumption among United States undergraduate college students aged 18 to 25. (Study 2) An alcohol and drug use questionnaire that contained 74-items was used to assess energy drink expectancies of undergraduate college students (n=1,246), aged 18 to 25. The variance in past 30-day energy drink consumption accounted for by energy drink expectancies were determined by a multinomial logistic regression analysis. Further, to understand which expectancies predicted energy drink consumption, binary logistic regression analyses were conducted with each expectancy factor. Results: (Study 1) Of the 164 articles found in the search process, 35 met the inclusion criteria for the systematic literature review. The level of scientific rigor varied, as neither the response rates nor validity measures were included in the majority of articles. In addition, convenience samples, self-reported data, and single site samples were common. (Study 2) With regard to the cross-sectional study, the expectancy factors were found to account for 24.3% of the variance in past 30-day energy drink consumption. Further, four expectancy factors were found to be significantly related to energy drink consumption including Anxiety/Negative Physical Effects, Withdrawal, Energy Enhancement, and Social/Mood Enhancement. Conclusions: Results from the literature indicate that more scientific rigor needs to be utilized with future research. Specifically, collecting and reporting response rates and validity measures, as well as using randomized and more heterogeneous samples. Further, it fueled the cross-sectional study as there was a gap in the literature regarding energy drink expectancies of college students. The Anxiety/Negative Physical Effects expectancy was found to be the strongest overall expectancy and negative expectancy, while Energy Enhancement was the strongest positive expectancy. Based on the results of this study, practitioners should educate college students highlighting the negative outcomes associated with energy drink consumption, while correcting the misperceptions concerning the positive expectancies consumers have in an effort to curb consumption
