The results, based on data derived in an actual industrial setting, confirmed the hypothesis. The theoretical implications of the findings are discussed.

Book excerpt: The overarching goal of this study was to explore whether the satisfaction and frustration of each basic psychological need was associated with job commitment. Further, I examined whether job-related attitudes (i.e., job satisfaction, job investment, and quality of alternative jobs) mediated the associations that the satisfaction and frustration of each basic psychological need had with job commitment. The results revealed that the satisfaction of all three basic psychological needs (i.e., autonomy, competence, and relatedness) had unique positive associations with job commitment, whereas the frustration of those needs has unique negative associations with job commitment. Further, the satisfaction and frustration of basic needs had consistent indirect associations with job commitment through job satisfaction. More specifically, the satisfaction of these needs had positive indirect associations with job commitment through job satisfaction and job investment but not through quality of alternative jobs. In contrast, the frustration of basic needs had negative indirect associations with job commitment through low levels of job satisfaction. Collectively, these results suggest that basic need satisfaction and frustration had unique associations with job-related attitudes and job commitment.
