In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, they began migrating southeast to Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. In the second half of the twentieth century, mainly because of their participation in the Second Indochina War (1954-1975), the Hmong began migrating to the West. Today the Hmong are one of the fastest-growing ethnic populations in the United States, increasing from about 94,000 in the 1990 census to approximately 190,000 in the U.S. Census Bureau's 2005 American Community Survey. With this rapid expansion, there has been a substantially increased interest in Hmong-related written works; multimedia materials; and websites among students, scholars, service professionals, and the general public. To help meet this interest, Mark Edward Pfeifer has compiled Hmong-Related Works, 1996-2006. The researcher investigated the definition of popular music, the globalization of popular music, and best practices for teaching popular music. This review also investigated theories of multicultural education, the intersection of multicultural education with music education, and models for teaching multicultural music education. This study employed ethnography and backward design to create a middle-school general music curriculum about Hmong popular music. The hip-hop musician Tou Saiko Lee and the rock musician Kace Vang were both interviewed during the ethnography and feature prominently in the curriculum. In addition the author described how ethnography and backward design were employed to generate the curriculum. The unit assessments included activities where students studied the life and music of Tou Lee and Kace Vang. These lessons require students to work in small groups to create and perform arrangements of songs by these musicians.

It negotiates both Hmong American political and cultural citizenship, meticulously rewriting the established view of the Hmong as “new” Asian neighbors—an approach articulated, Hollywood style, in Clint Eastwood’s film Gran Torino. The collection boldly moves Hmong American studies away from its usual groove of refugee recapitulation that entrenches Hmong Americans points-of-origin and acculturation studies rather than propelling the field into other exciting academic avenues. Following a summary of more than three decades’ of Hmong American experience and a demographic overview, chapters investigate the causes of and solutions to socioeconomic immobility in the Hmong American community and political and civic activism, including Hmong American electoral participation and its affects on policymaking. The influence of Hmong culture on young men is examined, followed by profiles of female Hmong leaders who discuss the challenges they face and interviews with aging Hmong Americans. A section on arts and literature looks at the continuing relevance of oral tradition to Hmong Americans’ successful navigation in the diaspora, similarities between rap and kwv txhiaj (unrehearsed, sung poetry), and Kao Kalia Yang’s memoir, The Latehomecomer. Encouragement for males to obtain a higher education may seem more likely to happen. School Counselors are expected to learn of multicultural counseling to effectively reach out to all students. It's important for school counselor's to know of and learn about the Hmong culture to effectively help Hmong students and give them resources necessary to obtain a higher education.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examines the personal history and risk factors that affect Hmong students in post-secondary education from the students' perspectives. Ten Hmong students (five male students and five female students) from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities were recruited to participate in this study. A series of open-ended questions was given to the participants. The researcher used content analysis to analyze the data. Categories were first developed from the interview responses and then were linked to previous related literature. After 40 years of living in the United States, the Hmong are still encountering many challenges in post-secondary education primarily due to internal (cultural barriers) and external (academic setting) conflicts. Acculturation is a continuous process in which individuals and families adopt different strategies at different times, and must deal with different life issues; thus, it is imperative that social workers and other professionals be knowledgeable about the current literature on how to effectively serve this population.
