Book Graduate Unemployment in South Africa

Download or read book Graduate Unemployment in South Africa written by Taryn Joy Van de Rheede and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study firstly defined the relevant concepts and discussed some theories relevant to graduate unemployment, before reviewing the results of the past studies on the nature and extent of graduate unemployment. Thereafter, the possible causes were investigated, such as lack of experience, lack of soft skills, skills mismatch, poor quality of education of the graduates, discrimination by employers, etc. Graduate unemployment in India, China and Europe were also considered, and it was found that graduate unemployment was not in a unique problem in South Africa. The study proceeded with an analysis the Statistics South Africa 1995-2010 labour survey data and conducted more up-to-date statistical analyses of the profile of graduate unemployed. The results showed that the characteristics of unemployed graduates were, in general, the same as what was found by the previous studies, as graduate unemployed were more likely to be female and black, aged 15-34 years at the time of the survey, residing in Gauteng, with only post-Matric certificates or diplomas, and graduating from the fields of Business / Commerce / Management, and Education / Training / Development. The Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition was also applied, and the results indicated that employment discrimination against black graduates was very likely, after controlling for differences in demographic and educational attainment blacks and whites.

Book Promoting Entrepreneurship to Reduce Graduate Unemployment

Download or read book Promoting Entrepreneurship to Reduce Graduate Unemployment written by Katono, Isaac Wasswa and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on recognition, evaluation, and exploitation of opportunities, entrepreneurship is a process that stimulates economic growth, provides us with new products and services, and serves as a solution to low unemployment rates. Hence, many governments encourage their citizens to embrace entrepreneurship as a strategy to mitigate unemployment, particularly youth and graduate unemployment. While studies show that entrepreneurship education has yielded positive results in Western countries, in other parts of the world it seems that most students still prefer to seek paid employment in their career of choice. Promoting Entrepreneurship to Reduce Graduate Unemployment seeks to expand understanding of the barriers that face graduates in becoming entrepreneurs in various countries, examining the role of educational institutions in promoting graduate entrepreneurship and evaluating governments as well as other schemes that promote graduate entrepreneurship. Although it will not be a panacea for all the obstacles that impede graduate entrepreneurship, it is hoped that this book will illuminate the entrepreneurship career path, serve as a platform for further diagnosis for reducing graduate unemployment, and highlight areas in need of further research. Covering topics such as entrepreneurial self-efficacy, career choice, and educated unemployment, it serves as a dynamic resource for educators, educational administration and faculty, government institutions, graduate students, student organizations, professionals, researchers, and academicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of unemployed young graduates in South Africa is on the rise. This is due to a combination of factors which include a lack of the right skills, work experience, type of qualification, low number of available jobs and other macro-economic factors. Different stakeholders have proposed entrepreneurship as possible solution to graduate unemployment. This book, based on a scientific study, explores the feasibility of entrepreneurship as a way out of unemployment for jobless graduates in South Africa. It does this by investigating the perceptions of young graduates of the University of KwaZulu-Natal who are engaged in entrepreneurship in the city of Pietermaritzburg. Two major areas of investigation in this book are that of the challenges that graduates encounter in their various business ventures as well as their perceptions about the effectiveness of entrepreneurship education at university

Over the past fifteen years, the number of degreed graduates in the labour force has more than doubled even as the graduate unemployment rate has fallen. And, even after the financial crisis, graduate unemployment remains at around 5 per cent. These are key findings of a recent research study commissioned by the Centre for Development and Enterprise." -- Cover.

Book First Employment Experiences of Graduates

Download or read book First Employment Experiences of Graduates written by Percy Moleke and published by HSRC Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined first employment experiences of graduates from South African universities, highlighting educational and noneducational factors that affected their ability to secure employment in their fields of study, as well as graduates' perceptions of their studies in relation to their jobs. Researchers sent surveys to 8,000 graduates listed in the Human Sciences Research Council registry who had graduated between 1991-95 (1,806 were returned). The study relied on graduates' work histories and their perceptions about their work experiences. The sample was stratified according to the size of two variables: historically black and historically white universities and broad fields of study. The study found that 59 percent of graduates secured employment immediately after obtaining their degrees; 84 percent found employment within their first year of searching. The report concludes that the labor market still reflects the apartheid system, with nonwhite graduates and graduates from historically black colleges disadvantaged in their employment search. About half the graduates believed that they were in jobs requiring graduate level ability; most perceived considerable benefits from higher education; and only a few had received career guidance at any point. Twenty-two data tables are included. Appended is the survey methodology, a biographical profile of the respondent group, and a description of occupations held. (Contains 33 references.) (SM)

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiences and livelihoods of unemployed graduates in Windhoek, Namibia. Graduate unemployment is a global phenomenon and is not only known to the nation of Namibia. There have been numerous research conducted on graduate unemployment worldwide but less research has been conducted on graduate unemployment in Namibia especially focusing on their experiences and livelihoods. This study aimed to examine the experiences and livelihoods of unemployed graduates residing in Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia. This study sought to find out how the Namibian nation is affected by the high number of unemployed graduates with the main focus being on the unemployed graduate. This study assessed the impact unemployment has on graduates by focusing on the following research questions; what are the experiences of unemployed graduates seeking employment and what are the livelihood activities of unemployed graduates? A qualitative approach has been used using narrative interviews as a method. The total number of participants interviewed was thirty participants selected using purposive and snowball sampling. The key findings of the study were that graduates are finding it difficult to obtain employment, the main reason being graduates lack the number of working years’ experience required by employers. Secondly, unemployed graduates are struggling to earn a living and have engaged in a range of ad hoc and informal activities to survive. The study also showed that for unemployed graduates residing in Windhoek, livelihoods are not sustainable. The participants discussed various strategies that can be implemented to better their experiences and livelihoods and these were considered as recommendations for practice and policy.

It reveals the inherent contradictions involved in trying to search for work whilst coping with the experience of unemployment.

Book The Unfolding of Meaning in Narratives of Unemployed Young Adult Graduates

Download or read book The Unfolding of Meaning in Narratives of Unemployed Young Adult Graduates written by Rinet Van Lill and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to explore how meaning unfolded in the narratives of unemployed young adult graduates. South Africa has the highest youth unemployment rate in the world, which is affecting a growing number of university graduates. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge about this population by combining insights on unemployment, young adulthood as a distinctive developmental period, and meaning. A qualitative research design, incorporating an existential-humanistic paradigm, was utilised to explore the nuances of personal experiences regarding meaning. A total of 12 participants between the ages of 21 and 30 who had graduated and had been unemployed for at least six months took part in individual interviews. Rich data were gathered through narrative interviews, and a narrative analysis yielded findings that demonstrated the uniqueness of each story and common themes that emerged. The participants had experienced a loss of meaning when expectations of employment were disappointed, which inspired efforts to seek meaning. Commitment to their original purpose through further education, connecting with supportive people, being involved in meaningful activities, and reflecting on how to obtain new coherence and growth restored their sense of meaning. The findings suggest that the ability to pursue new avenues of meaning can be cultivated as a valuable resource during unemployment. Stakeholders involved in graduates' transition to work should consider including meaning-focused interventions to prepare graduates for the labour market and to curb the deleterious effects of unemployment.
