Book A Study of Flows Over Highly swept Wings Designed for Manoeuvre at Supersonic Speeds

Download or read book A Study of Flows Over Highly swept Wings Designed for Manoeuvre at Supersonic Speeds written by P. R. Ashill and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation into supersonic free-stream flows over two wing-body configurations, having wings of different design, suitable for combat aircraft, is described. Both wings have the same quasi-delta planform of 60 deg inboard leading-edge sweep and the same 4% thickness distribution but have differing camber distributions. Following a description of the design of the wings, the test procedures are discussed and the general features of the flows at conditions close to those for sustained manoeuvre are identified and contrasted. Comparisons between calculations by CFD methods and measurement are presented, and it is shown that a multiblock method for solving the Euler equations is suitable for designing wings for efficient manoeuvre at supersonic speeds. Keywords: Swept wings; Supersonic flight maneuverability; Flight maneuvers; Combat aircraft. Great Britain. (edc).

Book Preliminary Investigation at Supersonic Speeds of Triangular and Sweptback Wings

Download or read book Preliminary Investigation at Supersonic Speeds of Triangular and Sweptback Wings written by Macon C. Ellis and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from a supersonic wind-tunnel investigation of a series of thin triangular and sweptback wings are presented. The triangular wing series consisted of eight triangular wings of vertex angles such that a range of leading-edge postions both inside and outside the Mach cone at the test Mach numbers of 1.43 and 1.71 was obtained. The three swept wings had angles of sweep at 45, 55, and 63 degrees and were tested at a Mach number of 1.43.

Book IUTAM Symposium on Mechanics of Passive and Active Flow Control

Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Mechanics of Passive and Active Flow Control written by G.E.A. Meier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The call for papers for the rUTAM-Symposium on Mechanics of Passive and Active Flow Control brought an overwhelming response of applications for contributions. Fi nally 12 invited lectures, 48 papers and 23 posters were selected by thc Scientific Com mittee to be presented in the conference. 58 papers are published in this volume. Due to the limited number of pages available, poster presentations could not be considered for publication. The editors would like to thank all the members of the Scientific Committee for their very valuable assistance. The papers presented at the rUT AM Symposium were classified under three groups de voted to • Passive Control Methods, • Active Control Methods and • Control Concepts. This was done to contrast at first between the passive techniques where the control power is mainly supplied by the flow itself and the active techniques where the power is pro vided by external sources; the third group was devoted to control concepts for presenting methods of control theory and new techniques of flow control.

Book A Supersonic Area Rule and an Application to the Design of a Wing body Combination with High Lift drag Ratios

Download or read book A Supersonic Area Rule and an Application to the Design of a Wing body Combination with High Lift drag Ratios written by Richard T. Whitcomb and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: As an extension of the transonic area rule, a concept for interrelating the wave drags of wing-body combinations at moderate supersonic speeds with axial developments of cross-sectional area has been derived. The wave drag of a combination at a given supersonic speed is related to a number of developments of cross-sectional areas as intersected by Mach planes. On the basis of this concept and other design procedures, a structurally feasible, swept-wing--indented-body combination has been designed to have relatively high maximum lift-drag ratios over a range of transonic and moderate supersonic Mach numbers. The wing of the combination has been designed to have reduced drag associated with lift and, when used with an indented body, to have low zero-lift wave drag. Experimental results have been obtained for this configuration at Mach numbers from 0.80 to 2.01. Maximum lift-drag ratios of approximately 14 and 9 were measured at Mach numbers of 1.15 and 1.41, respectively.
