Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Ramsey's reinterpretation of the Edward FitzGerald English-language version of the classic Omar Khayyam poem, The Rubaiyat, began with his displeasure of the oft-quoted verse: "Here with a loaf of Bread Beneath..." The author says: "I thought this sounded more Victorian than Persian. I think Omar meant something more like this: 'With a book of verse beneath the bough...' For my own amusement I then proceeded to deflower other of Fitzgerald's translations of Khayyam's poetry. The challenge was to make suitable alternatives to those famous verses that have made The Rubaiyat one of the best-known works of poetry in the English language. One might say that I plagiarized the author, or his principal translator, or both--but I consider this more as an unholy collaboration between the three of us over the centuries. I hope my two unwitting collaborators would not be displeased with my reinterpretation of their efforts." Ramsey's irreverent verses are amusing, full of philosophical wit, and very relevant indeed to today's free-swinging culture. Great reading! Great fun!

Book Influence of Epicurean Thought on the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Download or read book Influence of Epicurean Thought on the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam written by Craig A. Leisy and published by Shires Press. This book was released on 2016-09-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Omar Khayyam (1048-1123 CE), an astronomer and mathematician famous in his own time, is best known today as the author of remarkable verses of poetry on a variety of philosophical subjects including: the meaning of life and death, the existence and nature of god, free will and predestination, and the problem of evil. A collection of his verses was translated by the nineteenth century English poet Edward FitzGerald and published in 1859 as the, Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the Astronomer-Poet of Persia. The freethinker philosophy of Omar Khayyam, as expressed in his verses, was out of step with his society in the medieval Islamic world. However, his thinking was consistent with that of other freethinkers in the Middle East and may be traced to materialists in ancient Greece such as Democritus (atomism), and Epicurus (341-271 BCE). This book explores evidence that the Persian poet Omar Khayyam, and other poets in the medieval Islamic world, were influenced by the freethinkers in ancient Greece, the source of the conflict between science and religion.

Book excerpt: Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his 1859 translation of a selection of quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), dubbed the Astronomer-Poet of Persia.FitzGerald's work at first was unsuccessful, but was popularised by Whitley Stokes from 1861 onward, and the work came to be greatly admired by the Pre-Raphaelites; in 1872 FitzGerald had a third edition printed which increased interest in the work in America. By the 1880s, the book was extremely well known throughout the English-speaking world, to the extent of the formation of numerous Omar Khayyam Clubs and a fin de siècle cult of the Rubaiya. FitzGerald's work has been published in several hundred editions, and it has inspired similar translation efforts both in English and in many other languages.

Book Late Night Thoughts on Reading Fitzgerald s Omar Khayyam

Download or read book Late Night Thoughts on Reading Fitzgerald s Omar Khayyam written by Omar Khayyam and published by . This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is personal philosophical reflections on reading on Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, as translated by Edward Fitzgerald. Only some of the rubai are included, and the ones selected for including are taken from many different editions of the Fitzgerald translation based on my own preference of which was the best. The French translations are my own amateur attempt to convey the basic meaning of a few rubai into modern French. The illustrations are my own gouache and watercolor paintings done in 1995 in Silver Spring Maryland, inspired by those lithographs done by Akbar Tajvidi done in 1955 in Tehran, Iran. This book does not contain the full Edward Fitzgerald translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and is no substitute for reading that work in any of its five editions. It is simply my own "take" on some of the rubai, based on 50 years of thinking about them.

Book In Search of Omar Khayyam RLE Iran B

Download or read book In Search of Omar Khayyam RLE Iran B written by Ali Dashti and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Khayyam has been the subject of speculation on the part of literary critics ever since Edward Fitzgerald published his own version of the Rubaiyat in 1859. This edition represented the first opportunity to study in English the work of Khayyam by a Persian scholar. There is no conclusive evidence to prove which of the many quatrains attributed to Khayyam are authentic. Ali Dashti therefore constructs a likeness of the poet from references found in the works of writers of his day or immediately after, and from Khayyam’s own works on philosophy, mathematics and astronomy, of which the authenticity is not questioned. Khayyam emerges as a widely read and broad-minded scholar, immersed in his own studies, cautious and moderate, averse to committing himself on controversial questions. Using this portrait Dashti draws up a list of some hundred quatrains which are in keeping with Khayyam’s character. Selling point: An elegant and accurate translation which throws light on the nature of Khayyam’s religious and philosophical beliefs.

Book excerpt: Its lines and verses have become part of the western literary canon and his translation of this most famous of poems has been continuously in print in for almost a century and a half. But just who was Edward FitzGerald? Was he the eccentric recluse that most scholars would have us believe? Is there more to the man than just his famous translation? In The Man Behind the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam William Martin and Sandra Martin go beyond the standard view. Drawing on their unique analysis of the more than 2,000 surviving letters of FitzGerald, together with evidence from his scrapbooks, commonplace books and materials from his personal library, they reveal a more convivial yet complex personality than we have been led to suppose."
