Book excerpt: Microbursts are small downbursts, less than 4km in outflow size, with peak winds lasting only 2 to 5 minutes. They can be classified as either midair or surface microbursts and also either wet or dry microbursts. All microbursts are characterized by a vertical downrush of air with a divergent outflow at its base. The parent clouds associated with microbursts are: Cumulonimbus; Towering Cumulus; and Anvil Cirrus. Most origin theories credit thermodynamic factors with microburst creation. Wolfson (1983) contends that microbursts result from dynamically induced vertical pressure gradients that are intrinsic characteristics of strong mesocyclone circulation. Doppler radar is the primary tool for detecting and observing microbursts. Wind field mapping is accomplished by either a single, dual or triple radar configuration. Single radar analysis methods require the most external assumptions but are the least expensive. Multiple radar techniques provide more accuracy but are more costly. Wilson and Roberts (1983) propose a number of alternatives for realtime operational detection of microbursts in an airport environment. Of these alternatives they chose a single radar, on airport configuration as the optimum choice when considering economic feasibility as well as technical performance. (Author).

Book excerpt: In the interest of aviation safety, NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are jointly conducting research to determine the applicability of airborne, coherent Doppler radar techniques to detect early microburst in wind shear conditions during aircraft takeoff and landing. If early detection of these severe wind shear conditions can be demonstrated, avoidance maneuvers can be exercised and significantly reduce the probability of aircraft disaster. Researchers have developed a computer model of the radar which predicts its response when viewing a simulated microburst against the simulated clutter background of an airport, the so-called radar-microburst-ground clutter model. Studies employing this model revealed that Doppler radar can accurately detect microburst ahead of the aircraft in time for pilot evasive response, but flight experiments will be required for complete performance evaluation of the system.

Utilization of the FAA Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) is explored. The issues of antenna polarization and Sensitivity Time Control (STC) that impact on shared operation for aircraft and weather detection are addressed. Candidate system configurations employing a common RF channel and dual orthogonal polarization channels are discussed. Ground clutter discrimination by coherent Doppler and noncoherent (Doppler spread) processing methods is described. An interim procedure is suggested for obtaining fixed reflectivity contour data from a Moving Target Detector for use in the all-digital ARTS. A preliminary design is presented for a new joint-use, long-range weather radar to support enroute air traffic controllers and to meet the data requirements of the National Weather Service and the Air Weather Service. Previous studies have shown that these outflows can be hazardous to an airplane during takeoffs and landings. The ultimate goal of a microburst detection algorithm is the timely warning of potentially hazardous wind shears through the detection of reliable precursors. Research in Colorado and Oklahoma documented the significance of precursors such as descending reflectivity cores, convergence, rotation, and reflectivity notching as indicators that a microburst will occur in the very near future. The overall importance of an individual feature varies between regions. This investigation will focus on those precursors which play a dominant role in the formation of wet microbursts in the southeastern United States. The data analyzed in this report was gathered by the FAA TDWR S-band Doppler radar during 1985 and 1986 in Memphis, Tennessee, and Huntsville, Alabama. The data used for this study were collected in the Memphis, TN area during the FLOWS (FAA/Lincoln Laboratory Observational Weather Studies) project of 1985. The methods used for declaring a microburst from both Doppler radar and surface anemometer data are described. The main objective of this report was to identify the results that were generated by comparing the 1985 radar detected microbursts (which impacted the surface anemometer system) with the surface mesonet detected microbursts. In so doing, the issue of missed microburst detections, for which there occurred two (both by the radar), is identified. Possible reasons as to why these two microbursts were not detected are discussed in detail.
