This book was released on 2006 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS has collected a large sample of K to pi pi0 gamma decays. Two amplitudes contribute to these decays. The dominant one comes from Inner Bremsstrahlung (IB) in the K to pi pi0 process. The second one is given by the Direct Emission (DE) of the photon at the weak vertex from an intermediate state of the decay. The simplest radiative transitions are electric dipole (E1) and magnetic dipole (M1). Electric amplitudes can interfere with IB, and CP violation and possible non-SM effects can show up in th e corresponding interference (INT) term.In this work a sub sample of the data has been analyzed. About 120000 K to pi pi0 gamma decays, with negligible background contamination have been reconstructed in the ranges 0.2

Book Status of a Study of the Decay K Pi Nu

Download or read book Status of a Study of the Decay K Pi Nu written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AGS-787, BNL-Princeton-TRIUMF, began taking data in February 1988 on rare K decays into .pi. and non-interacting neutrals. Recent observations of B-/bar B/ mixing have sharpened the branching ratio prediction of the three generation standard model, (SM), to (approximately) 1-5 x 10−1° for .pi.+.nu./bar /nu//. The detector has 2.pi. acceptance for this decay and 4.pi. acceptance for background gammas. A very large window for viewing new physics exists between the SM value and the previous experimental limit of 1.4 x 10−7. Several other predicted rare K+ decays can be detected. The performance of the detector is described. 8 refs., 4 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors as well as their applications. Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.

Book Study of the Decay K L Pi E Nu E E to Probe the Semileptonic K pi Structure

Download or read book Study of the Decay K L Pi E Nu E E to Probe the Semileptonic K pi Structure written by Katsushige Kotera and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors observed a new neutral kaon decay mode, K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup {+-}}e{sup {-+}}{bar {nu}}e{sup +}e{sup -} for the first time. Based on the 20225 events including 1018 {+-} 25 background events, they determined the branching ratio, B(K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup {+-}}e{sup {-+}}{bar {nu}}e{sup +}e{sup -}; M{sub e{sup +}e{sup -}}> 5 MeV/c{sup 2}, E*{sub e{sup +}e{sup -}}> 30 MeV) = (1.281 {+-} 0.041) x 10{sup -5}. This branching ratio agrees with a theoretical prediction based on the chiral perturbation theory ({chi}PT) calculation at {Omicron}(p{sup 4}). Most of the kinematical distributions agree with the {chi}PT {Omicron}(p{sup 4}) calculation. They also measured one of the low energy coupling constants for the {chi}PT {Omicron}(p{sup 4}), L{sub 9}{sup r} = (8.0 {+-} 1.6) x 10{sup -3}. The M{sub e{sup +}e{sup -}} distribution below 100 MeV showed a 3 {sigma} deviation from the {chi}PT {Omicron}(p{sup 4}) calculation. This requires further studies in theory and experiments.

Book Measurement of the Branching Fraction And Search for Direct CP Violation in the B J Psi Pi Decay Mode at BaBar

Download or read book Measurement of the Branching Fraction And Search for Direct CP Violation in the B J Psi Pi Decay Mode at BaBar written by Francesco Fobozzi and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of CP-violation in weak interactions, discovered in 1964 in decays of neutral kaons, receives a simple and elegant explanation in the Standard Model with three generations of quarks. Indeed, in this model the common source of CP-asymmetry phenomena is represented by a simple complex phase in the unitary matrix (the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix) describing the charged weak couplings of the quarks. This simple scheme has never received an accurate validation, because the phenomenological parameters determined from measurements of CP-violation in kaons decays are related to the fundamental parameters of the theory in a complex way, sensitive to large theoretical uncertainties. On the contrary, decays of neutral B mesons like B{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi} K{sub S}{sup 0} represent a unique laboratory to test the predictions of the theory because they are expected to show significant CP-violation effects, the magnitude of which is cleanly related to the Standard Model parameters. Thus experimental facilities have been built with the purpose of performing extensive studies of B decays. The BABAR experiment is operating at one of these facilities, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. It is collecting data at the PEP-II asymmetric e{sup +}e{sup -} collider (E{sub e{sup -}} = 9.0 GeV; E{sub e{sup +}} = 3.1 GeV), a high-luminosity accelerator machine (L = 3 x 10{sup 33} cm{sup -2}s{sup -1}). The center-of-mass energy (10.58 GeV) of the e{sup +}e{sup -} system at PEP-II allows resonant production of the {Upsilon}(4S), a b{bar b} bound state, which decays almost exclusively in a B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} or a B{sup +}B{sup -} pair. A high-acceptance detector, projected and built by a wide international collaboration, detects and characterizes the decay products of the B mesons. From the analysis of the data collected during the first two years of operation, the BABAR collaboration has established CP-violation in decays of neutral B mesons at the 4.1{sigma} level. Besides the primary goal of CP-violation studies, the high luminosity of PEP-II, coupled with the high acceptance of the BABAR detector, allows competitive studies of the properties of a wide set of B decay modes. In particular, measurements of non-leptonic decays are extremely useful to understand the dynamics of the non-perturbative strong interactions involved in these processes. In this thesis a study of the non-leptonic decay mode B{sup {+-}} {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup {+-}} is presented.
