Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in Battle Formation Conclusions as to a sound formation.e details of reor personal knowledge of battle formations to work from. Individual officers, however, with few exceptions, can not be fully informed of de tailed battle formation in the American Expeditionary Forces as revealed by a study of the mass of original documents in existence. Few officers are properly placed with sufficient time to consult these documents, which as records of actual experience are the best authority on the subject. For the rest, Col. Ardant du Picq, an au thority on the psychology of war, in his Etudes sur le (7) says nothing, especially in the trade of war, is forgotten sooner than experience. So many fine things can be done, beautiful maneuvers executed, ingenious combat methods invent-ed in the musings of the office, or on the maneuver field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Tactics of Infantry: Studies In How do they affect his manner of conducting either? (a question of elementary tactics, drill). Now, although upon the former of these two ques tions opinions are pretty well reconciled, and nearly unanimous, the latter has not been settled definitively even by the last war between France and Germany, and we still see military men everywhere occupied with theoretical argument and practical experiment upon elementary tactics, especially with reference to infantry, seeking after a solution of the problem. The necessity of finding such has been brought home to all more closely by the war of 1870 - 71, and has been accepted more readily than perhaps was the case before. Book Studies in the Leading of Troops Vol 1

Download or read book Studies in the Leading of Troops Vol 1 written by Julius Von Verdy Du Vernois and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Leading of Troops, Vol. 1: The Infantry Division as a Part of an Army Corps In order to develop and direct the war strength of a nation, we must have commanders, and we must educate them. While their education should in the main be of a practical nature, yet there is no question but that it must go hand in hand with a theoretical course of study. Nor can we lose sight, at the outset, of how little time for theoretical preparation is available to one of the military profession. He who lays claim to culture cannot dispense with a general scientific foundation to be followed by a professional education. While the former almost wholly occupies the school-year period of a young man, his practical education should nevertheless begin as soon as possible. It is for this reason that with cadets in military schools, public or private, professional instruction can strive only for limited results, a condition detrimental to the most important subject of their study - Tactics. Furthermore, the field of Tactics is too large and too intricate to allow the beginner to go over it thoroughly during this period. As a consequence, we find it practicable to treat in detail only minor situations in which he may have to act at the outset of his army career, outside of which we must be content with a general illustration and superficial knowledge. Book Development of Tactics World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Development of Tactics World War Classic Reprint written by Balck Balck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development of Tactics World War It is hoped that this work will have its share in em phasizing the experiences of the war that have been pur chased with so much blood, and which experiences may easily run the danger of being lost in the dissolution of our old, tried army. May these pages call back to mind what our troops have performed, the equal of which can not be found in military history, by heavy work against an enemy so superior in numbers and equipped with all possible auxiliary means. But the heroic achievements of our troops were possible only because all members of the army performed untiring and devoted work in time of peace, in the matter of training the men to faithful per formance of duty, willingness to assume responsibility and audacity. I have but briefly touched on the end of the army; my theme ends upon the battlefield; the awful dissolution process and the failures at home, are beyond the limits of tactics. Therefore, I have purposely avoided touching on the unfortunate struggles in the interior of our country. This book of mine is not for the purpose of accusing, neither is it for the purpose of excusing errors that have been committed. I have merely touched where it was abso lutely necessary. My only endeavor has been to show how our present day tactics had their being and how they, starting from an excellent peace training, adapted them selves to the continually more difficult demands of battle. Though the war could not end with victory on the battle field, that surely was not the fault of the army, nor of its leaders. I shall be very thankful for any corrections and addi tions. This book has been chiefly prepared to aid officers in the examinations which they must pass for promotion, and to give them the views of a large number of eminent soldiers. Download or read book Studies in Minor Tactics Classic Reprint written by United States Army Service School and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Minor Tactics In most of the studies an endeavor has been made not only to set forth certain principles of minor tactics, but also to enable the reader to form for himself a mental picture of the manner in which troops might well be handled in case the conditions assumed in the various studies actually existed in the field. It is perhaps needless to say that the department does not consider any one of the solutions herein as the only correct solution to the problem presented in the particular situation, but merely as a solution that is regarded as reasonable. The same is true of all solutions prepared by the department for the various problems included in the course in military art at these schools. Book The Procurement and Training of Ground Combat Troops Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Procurement and Training of Ground Combat Troops Classic Reprint written by Robert Roswell Palmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Procurement and Training of Ground Combat Troops The decision to prepare a comprehensive account of military activities was made early in the war. Trained historians were assigned to the larger units of the Army and War Department to initiate the work of research, analysis, and writing. The results of their work, supplemented by additional research in records not readily available during the war, are presented in this series. The general plan provides for a division into subseries dealing with the War Department, the Army Air, Ground, and Service Forces, the technical services, and the theaters of operations. This division conforms to the organization of the Army during World War II and, though involving some overlapping in subject matter, has the advantage of presenting a systematic account of developments in each major fieldof responsibility as well as the points of View of the particular commands. The plan also includes volumes on such topics as statistics, order of battle, military training, the Women's Army Corps, and other subjects that transcend the limits of studies focused on an agency or command. The whole project is oriented toward an eventual summary and synthesis. The studies in this volume were written during the war in the Historical Section of Headquarters, Army Ground Forces, where the authors had free access to the records and experience of the command. The Historical Division of the War Department has confined material changes to such additions of in formation, approved by the authors, as seemed necessary to round out the picture presented. The full and frank presentation of the wartime point of view of the Army Ground Forces, which has not been affected by the changes made, is regarded as one of the most valuable features of this particular series of studies. Book Principles of the Art and Science of War and Their Application in Modern Warfare

This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of the Art and Science of War and Their Application in Modern Warfare: With Remarks on the Handling of Troops on the Field of Battle, as at Present Practiced The idea of preparing this work occurred to me during the course of instruction in Mahan's Outpost at this school last fall. The above text-book having been published before the introduction of breech loading weapons, and previous to the modifications in tactics made necessary by their introduction, as exemplified in recent wars, it is desirable that some of the principles developed during the progress of these wars should be embraced in a preliminary study of the Art of War. It is hoped that this result will to some extent be accomplished by this volume, which is a compilation from the best works bearing on these subjects, embodying the principles deduced from a study of the history of these wars, and the opinions of many active participants in them who are considered to be authorities on the questions they have considered. Book Classical Greek Tactics

Download or read book Classical Greek Tactics written by Roel Konijnendijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What determined the choices of the Greeks on the battlefield? Were their tactics defined by unwritten moral rules, or was all considered fair in war? In Classical Greek Tactics: A Cultural History, Roel Konijnendijk re-examines the literary evidence for the battle tactics and tactical thought of the Greeks during the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Rejecting the traditional image of limited, ritualised battle, Konijnendijk sketches a world of brutally destructive engagements, restricted only by the stubborn amateurism of the men who fought. The resulting model of hoplite battle does away with most received wisdom about the nature of Greek battle tactics, and redefines the way they reflected the values of Greek culture as a whole.
