Download or read book A Child s History of Scotland Classic Reprint written by Mrs Oliphant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's History of Scotland Malcolm was received with much kindness in England, and Siward went to Scotland with him to help him to regain his father's crown. The country itself rose to welcome and help him when, with the great Thane of Fife, Macduff, at his side, and Saxon Siward with his army, he marched home to the north, so that the usurper trembled before him. Macbeth, as we all know, was a man of many superstitions. He might never have murdered Duncan, or entered on his career of blood at all, if it had not been for the witches, women who were feared and believed in those days, and who were said to have put the whole dreadful scheme into his head, or perhaps only fanned the flame which had been al ready smouldering there. He had been told by these mocking prophetesses that he was safe until Bimam Wood should march to Dunsinane, where he was lodged in his strong castle. This he understood to mean that he should be always safe, for it was certain that to Dunsinane, or anywhere else, Bimam Wood could never march. But it happened that, as the advancing army marched through the noble covert of this wood, Macduff advised the soldiers each to cut for himself a bough from the trees, that their number should not be detected, and thus as Siward's men and the loyal Scots approached, the bright ness of their helmets and breastplates veiled with the green leaves, it was indeed as if Birnam Wood were marching upon the usurper's castle. He sallied forth in his despair and died fighting, which, perhaps, was better than he deserved. I saw a great oak the other day upon the banks of the clear and shining Tay which surged round the promontory of greensward upon which it stood, and this, I was told, was the last tree of Bimam Wood. Amid all the wonderful colours of the autumn woods, it alone stood dark against the gleam of the river and the blue of the sky. Book A History of Scotland From the Roman Occupation Vol 2 of 3 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Scotland From the Roman Occupation, Vol. 2 of 3 The author must apologise for any errors in fact which have escaped his attention, or are due to that subconscious bias from which no historical student can be free. In his opinion the hardships of' the Catholics, after the Reforma tion, have been rather cavalierly treated by many of our historians, and he has therefore dwelt upon a point too much neglected. As Sir Walter Scott observed in a private letter, our sympathies - at the period here treated, and later - are apt always to be with the party which is out of power. Book The History of Scotland Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Scotland Classic Reprint written by James Mackenzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Scotland The religious element in Scottish History, from the Reformation to the Revolution, is well-nigh everything. It is hard to understand how any man not sympathizing with the religion of Scotland could write her history fairly. But some of our ablest historians have altogether lacked that sympathy; and the consequence is that their descriptions of' our religious struggles cannot be read without indignation. Scotland, to borrow the language of Defoe, has been represented to the world in so many monstrous shapes, and dressed up in so many devils' coats and fools' coats, that her own sons do not know their mother. There is a foolish, sentimental generation, whose only ideas of Scottish History are taken from novels, songs, and ballads. It is impossible to speak the truth about that bloody House which fell at the Revolution, and its minions, without giving offence to such persons. It is equally impossible to speak the truth about the great contendings of our glorious forefathers for their religious freedom, without offending the enemies of our Scottish Presbyterianism. The writer merely begs leave to repeat an anecdote of the greatest of Scottish historians, given by James Melville in his Diaryz - That September, in time of vacance, my uncle Mr. Andrew, Mr. Thomas Buchanan, and I, hearing that Mm George Buchanan was weak, and his History under the press, passed over to Edinburgh to visit him and see the work. We went from him to the printer's work-house, whom we found at the end of the seventeenth book of his Chronicle, at a place which we thought very hard for the time, which might be an occasion of staying the whole work - anent the burial of Davie. Therefore, staying the printer from proceeding, we came to Mr. George. Mr. Thomas, his cousin, shows him of the hardness of that part of his story, that the King would be offended with it, and it might stay all the work. 'tell me, man, ' says he, 'if I have told the truth 'yes, ' says Mr. Thomas, 'sir, I think so.' 'i will hide his feud and all his kin's, then. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History Banking in Scotland IN presenting a reprint of this work, the writer desires to acknowledge the appreciative spirit in which the first edition was received. He has endeavoured to give effect to the kindly criticism which was evoked; and to supply to some extent what was lacking in the first essay. It has been a great pleasure to him to find that what was a labour of love has been of service to the students, and of occasional interest to the older members of the banking profession. If the present emendation prove as helpful as he is assured the original effort has proved, he will be abundantly satisfied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scotland's Story: A History of Scotland for Boys and Girls I make no apology for them, for has not a grave and learned historian said that there ought to be two histories of Scotland one woven with the golden threads of romance and glittering with the rubies and sapphires of Fairyland? Such, surely, ought to be the children's Scotland. So I dedicate my book to the littler children, ' as Caledonia calls them, who care for their country's story. It is sent into the world in no vain spirit of rivalry, but rather as a humble tribute to the great Master of Romance, who wrote Tales for his little grandson, and I shall be well repaid, if my tales but form stepping-stones by which little feet may pass to his Enchanted Land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Rise and Development of Presbyterianism in Scotland Throughout the whole history of the Reformed Church in Scotland one of the most outstanding features will be found to be the overwhelming desire to maintain the independence of the Church from all secular control, and the most characteristic feature of the disputes which went on during the reigns of the Stewart Kings (especially James VI and I, and Charles I), was the failure of those Monarchs to appreciate the Scottish sentiments Of Patriotism, Protestantism and Freedom. Book Scotland Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scotland Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Sir Walter Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scotland, Vol. 1 of 2 The Author was invited to undertake this general Sketch of Scottish History in connection with a similar abridgment of English History by Sir James Mackin tosh, and a History of Ireland by Thomas Moore, Esquire. There are few literary persons who would not have been willing to incur much labor and risk of reputation for the privilege of publishing in such society. On the present occasion, the task, though perhaps still a rash one, was rendered more easy by the Author having so lately been employed on the volumes called Tales of a Grandfather, transferred from the History of Scotland, for the benefit of a young relation. Yet the object and tenor of these two works are extremely different. In the Tales taken from Scottish history, the author, throwing into the shade, or rather omitting all that could embarrass the under standing or tire the attention of his juvenile reader, was desirous only to lay before him what was best adapted to interest his imagination, and confining himself to facts, to postpone to a later period an investigation of the principles out of which those facts arose. Book The Story of Scotland from the Earliest Times to the Present Century Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Scotland From the Earliest Times to the Present Century Thf. Story of Scotland presents two classes of facts and incidents of varied and absorbing interest. First, the conflict of the chief tribes with each other; the foundation of the Monarchy; the gradual extension of the kingdom from its centre outward; and the development of a distinct and intense nationality. Second, the struggles arising from the invasions and attacks of external enemies, which were commenced by the Romans, followed by the Danes and N orwe gians and, finally, the long and unequal struggle with England. In all these conflicts for liberty and inde pendence, the Scots made a heroic and memorable defence. Although often cruelly oppressed and driven to the greatest extremities of suffering and privation, at times almost conquered still in the face of all obstacles and against fearful odds they continued to resist and ultimately triumphed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Byways of Scottish History What has so far been said does not, it must be allowed, apply very directly to one of the papers contained in the present collection. It cannot be claimed for the Long tail myth, of which the stpry is here given, that it is essentially Scottish. It may, however, be urged in support of its right to appear here, that it was French at a time when, as regards antipathy against England. The agreement between France and Scotland was a very close one. And, if further justification be needed, it may be found in the fact that some of the Scottish chroniclers are amongst those who supply the most valuable informa tion concerning both the prevalence and the alleged origin of the quaint medieval belief that Englishmen had tails inflicted on them in punishment of the impiety of some of their pagan forefathers. In connection with this paper the author has the pleasant duty of expressing his thanks to Dr. George Neilson, to whom he is indebted for several illustra tive passages; and also to Mr. Barwick, of the British Museum, without whose ready help a number of others would have remained inaccessible.
