Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature The general purpose in the preparation of this book has, been to eliminate negligible detail and to subordinate or omit authors of minor importance in order to stress the men and the movements that are most significant in American intel lectual history/ The book has therefore been written with a view to showing the drift of American thought as illustrated by major writers or groups and as revealed by a careful study of one or two cardinal works by each. In this sequence of thought the growth of American self-consciousness and the changing ideals of American patriotism have been kept in mind throughout. The attempt is made to induce study of representative classics and extensive reading of the American literature which illuminates the past of the country chiefly, of course, in reminiscent fiction, drama, and poetry. Download or read book A Student s History of American Literature written by William Edward Simonds and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's History of American Literature In the preparation of this book, the author has followed in the main the principles embodied in A Student's History of English Literature, published in 1902; less reference has been made, however, to the historical setting - it being assumed that the student is well acquainted with the history of his own country. The author has tried to present the story with directness, omitting what seemed unessential or of minor importance, avoiding the technical both in criticism and in vocabulary, and attempting in the arrangement of material to find a plan as simple and clear as possible. Believing most emphatically that a course in the history of our literature should in no degree supplant the study of its masterpieces, but contribute rather to the enjoyment and correct appreciation of them, he has sought not only to interest his readers in the personal narratives of men and women who have created our literature, - and are still creating it, - but, through the suggestions for study or reading, also to encourage actual acquaintance with the works that compose that literature. Many of the reference books mentioned in the text will be of more value to the teacher than to the pupil; and the experienced instructor will make more frequent use of illustration than of critical comment. It would be gratifying if our principal authors were represented in every school library, and if one such author could be read entire by each student in the course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intensive Studies in American Literature Every teacher of literature knows how often students come unprepared to the class with the excuse, I didn't know how to go at the lesson. They have in their hands some edition of a masterpiece, carefully annotated to explain words and allusions, but failing to suggest any plan of study. If the teacher has no time or opportunity to formulate such a plan, the students probably gain only detached and frag mentary notions of the classic, and no conception at all of its purpose and value. The studies in this volume are in tended to show the pupils one way to go at their work, by outlining plans for the study of some of the masterpieces most profitable for class work and most often used in the high school class in American literature. The studies are the product of class-room experience, and have been found practically useful as a means of inspiring in not a few young persons an intelligent appreciation of good literature. It may not be amiss to state here a few of the aims the volume attempts to achieve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Subordinate to these authors are those less famous with whom all but the most superficial students should be acquainted, and who would necessarily be excluded in a briefer consideration of our literature. III. Authors' belonging to the literature of knowl edge, rather than to the literature of power, writers whose services must always be remembered in any complete history of literature, these, together with their works, are mentioned in the introductory paragraphs of each chapter. IV. English authors have been chronologically divided into six groups for the purpose of giving the student a clearer idea of what writers were contemporaneous, and, at the same time, effectively to present the movement dur ing each epoch. It is believed that the classification is a natural one, and that while doing no violence to similar and well-settled plans, it more exactly discriminates the periods of actual change in the literary spirit. Book An Introduction to the Study of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Brander Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of American Literature This book is intended as an introduction to the study of American literature. Although the chapters on the separate authors are wholly distinct, they have been so planned that each of them prepares the way for its suc cessor, and that all of them together outline the changing circumstances under which American literature has devel oped. An attempt has been made to show how each of the chief American authors influenced his time, and how he in turn was influenced by it; and also to indicate how each of them was related to the others, both personally and artistically. Bearing in mind the fact that the student needs to have his attention centered on vital points, all dates and all proper names, and all titles of books not absolutely essen tial, have been rigorously omitted. Interest has thus been concentrated on the literary career of each of the greater writers and on their practice of the literary art, in the hope and expectation that the student will be encouraged and stimulated to read their works for his own pleasure. After the consideration of these more important authors, one by one, the writers of less consequence have been discussed briefly in a single Chapter; and in like manner a single chapter has been devoted to a summary considera tion of the condition of our literature at the beginning Of the twentieth century. NO living author is named in the text. To arouse the student's interest in the authors as actual men, the illustrations chosen have been confined to por traits and views, and to facsimiles of manuscripts. To enable him to see for himself the successive stages of the growth of American literature, and to let him dis cover how the authors sometimes came one after an other and sometimes worked side by side, there has been appended also a chronological table of the chief dates in our literary history. As mere text-book instruction can never be an adequate substitute for the student's own acquaintance with the actual works of the authors discussed, there have been annexed to every chapter bibliographical notes calling attention to the editions most suitable for the student's reading, and also to the best biographies and to a few of the most suggestive criticisms. Book A History of Literature in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Literature in America Classic Reprint written by Barrett Wendell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Literature in America When it was proposed that Wendell's Literary History of America should be reprinted in a school edition, it was clear to us that for such use the book needed thorough revision. Many passages, which properly found place in a book intended for general reading, involved expressions of opinion obviously unsuitable for schools. In preparing this school version, our object has accordingly been to omit needless or debatable matter, but to preserve the general outline and all available portions of the original work. To aid us in our task, we submitted the Literary History, chapter by chapter, to an advanced class of students at Harvard College, whom we encouraged to criticise it minutely in writing. The energy and good sense with which they did so have enabled us to correct many slight errors, and, at the same time, have strengthened our conviction that the earlier book was historically sound. We cannot too heartily acknowledge our debt to this critical collaboration of our pupils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's American History In the latter part of the fifteenth century Venice had gained control of the lucrative trade between Europe and the Indies. That trade, however, was seriously hampered by the fact that it could not follow a direct and continuous water route. The Isthmus of Suez barred the way. For this reason, the spices, silks, and drugs brought from the far East up the Red Sea had to be unloaded, transported across the desert to the Nile,4 the student's american history. [1487. Book A History of American Literature

Download or read book A History of American Literature written by Fred Lewis Pattee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature: With a View to the Fundamental Principles Underlying Its Development; A d104-Book for Schools and Colleges In the preparation of this history of the rise and development of American literature the author has had clearly in mind the limitations to which every textbook on literature must be subject. Such a work can be at best only directive. It can trace the influences of race, environment, and epoch, and indicate causes and results; it can insist that the student follow the logical order, rejecting everything not worthy of his attention and emphasizing sufficiently the emphatic points; it can furnish him with a plan for estimating the personality and influence of each individual author; but more it cannot do. No one ever learned literature from a text-book, not even when it was supplemented by copious extracts from the authors considered. Fragments of an author's writings, like fragments of any work of art, give only vague ideas of the whole. He who has studied merely "Thanatopsis" or "Evangeline" knows very little of Bryant or Longfellow. A knowledge of "Rip Van Winkle" provides the key to only a very small part of Irving's domain. Download or read book A History of American Literature written by William B. Cairns and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature This book attempts to trace within reasonable compass the course of literary development in America, and to present the most significant facts regarding American authors and their works. It places greatest emphasis on general movements because American literature is first of all important as an expression of national life. There are few American writings that require careful analysis and merit intensive study as masterpieces. But in a nation where education has from the first been so generally diffused, literary attempts of slight artistic merit may reflect not only the obvious changes in national life and ideals, but subtler tendencies and aspirations. For this reason attention is given not only to the few greater writers, but to many others whose works, though less important in themselves, are sometimes even more significant. The plan of the book and the decision what to include and what to exclude have been influenced by the authors experiences with college classes; but an attempt has been made to meet the wants of the general reader as well as those of the systematic student. In tracing tendencies and movements it has been necessary to adopt a geographical classification of authors; and this has sometimes been carried beyond the point where it is significant. It is a matter of the greatest importance whether an author represents the spirit of Puritan New England or the spirit of Cavalier Virginia; it is of little importance whether he chances to write in New Hampshire or in Vermont. For convenience, however, smaller as well as larger groupings have been made on the basis of residence. In adopting this plan the author wishes to disclaim any intention of over-emphasizing sectional differences. Book Abridged History of the United States

Download or read book Abridged History of the United States written by Emma Hart Willard and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abridged History of the United States: Or Republic of America The leading objects of the author of this work, have been to give the events of the history with clearness and accuracy; with such illustrations of time and place addressed to the eye, as shall secure their retention in the memory; and, at the same time, with such an order of arrangement, as will enable the mind to recall, at need, what it thus retains. This we regard as important, not only with respect to this particular study; but as rightly laying out the ground-plan of the intellect, so far as the whole range of history is concerned. We have endeavoured to make the book convenient, - by side notes with dates, - by numbered paragraphs of suitable length for reading classes, - and by questions on each paragraph, placed at the bottom of the page. These questions are so put, that youthful teachers may avail themselves of the author's long experience, to acquire a manner of questioning, which, while it is not obscure, will yet oblige the pupil to think, and which will bring into relief prominent points. We have, indeed, been desirous to cultivate the memory, the intellect, and the taste. But much more anxious have we been to sow the seeds of virtue, by showing the good in such amiable lights, that the youthful heart shall kindle into desires of imitation. And we have been careful to give clear conceptions of those deeds, which are proper to imitate; while, with regard to bad actions, we have, as far as possible, given the result, rather than the detail.
