Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prerequisite to investigating the underlying causes behind mass extinction is a profound understanding of the evolutionary history of both living and dead species. It is especially important to appreciate the significance of such studies in extinct organisms; especially in organisms that were abundant in a certain geologic era, but have subsequently dwindled or become extinct. Such studies should help to accurately evaluate patterns of evolution in extinct species lineages and help predict the same in its modern analogs. The book includes cutting edge research in evolutionary biology that should serve as a starting point for conservation.
Download or read book Paleozoic Stratigraphy and Resources of the Michigan Basin written by G. Michael Grammer and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Michigan Basin is a classic intracratonic basin that has played a significant role in the fundamental understanding of geological processes in such basins, and has been an important resource for oil and gas, economic minerals, groundwater, and coal. Despite the classic nature of the Michigan Basin, there has not been a "special volume" dedicated to the basin in nearly 25 years. Since that time, new advancements in the geological sciences, particularly the utilization of high-resolution sequence stratigraphy and three-dimensional geostatistical modeling, have led to a new and more comprehensive understanding of the Paleozoic sedimentary packages of the Michigan Basin. This volume provides significant new insights of the Michigan Basin to both academic and applied geoscientists; it includes papers that discuss various aspects of the sedimentology and stratigraphy of key units within the basin, as well as papers that analyze the diverse distribution of natural resources present in this basin.
Download or read book Brachiopods of the Traverse Group Devonian of Michigan written by and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Traverse group, of middle and late Devonian age, comprises about 600 feet of limestone, argillaceous limestone, and calcareous shale along its belt of outcrop in the northern part of the southern peninsula of Michigan. The abundance and exquisite preservation of the invertebrate fauna make these beds one of the finest collecting grounds for Devonian fossils in North America, and many studies on the corals, mollusks, ostracods, and Bryozoa have been published. The present report begins the systematic study of Traverse brachiopods by an analysis of the superfamilies Dalmanellacea, Pentameracea, Strophomenacea, Orthotetacea, Chonetacea, and Productacea. Twenty-three genera, 98 species, and 11 subspecies are recognized. Fifty-four of the species are new. Five new genera (Sphenophragmus, Orthopleura, Oligorhachis, Helaspis, and Truncalosia) are proposed. Bivariate statistical techniques are employed as a means of characterizing the growth patterns of 70 species and subspecies. Unusually abundant and stratigraphically complete collections of several genera from the lower four formations of the Traverse group in the Thunder Bay region involve continuous variation between extreme morphologic types. This is interpreted as a record of endemic evolution rather than migration. Theoretical difficulties in the compartmentation of a biologic continuum, ordinarily not encountered because of the incomplete nature of the paleontologic record, are here met in fact. Significant differences are noted in the number of species of the genus Strophodonta found in different formations, with a maximum of taxonomic diversity and a minimum of morphologic variation characterizing collections from the Alpena limestone. This relationship is interpreted in terms of adaptive radiation into a diversity of habitats associated with Alpena reefs. Ranges of species in the sections exposed on the shores of Little Traverse Bay and Thunder Bay are established. Faunal evidence documents the correlation of the Gravel Point formation with the Alpena limestone and part of the Four Mile Dam formation and the correlation of the middle Petoskey formation with the Potter Farm formation. Although the proportion of cosmopolitan species is small, identification of Traverse forms in collections from Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Ontario, Missouri, and New York contributes to the regional correlation of Traverse strata"--P. 351.

Download or read book Biodiversity and Evolutionary Ecology of Extinct Organisms written by Rituparna Bose and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-11 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing rate of species extinction in the present day will lead to a huge biodiversity crisis; eventually, this will lead to the paucity of non-renewable resources of energy making our Earth unsustainable in future. To save our mother planet from this crisis, studies need to be performed to discover abundant new fossil sites on Earth for continued access to oil-rich locations. Most importantly, a holistic approach is necessary in solving the present problem of biodiversity loss. This book presents newly developed quantitative models in understanding the biodiversity, evolution and ecology of extinct organisms. This will assist future earth scientists in understanding the natural and anthropogenic causes behind biodiversity crisis and ecosystem collapse. In addition, this study would be of great interest to exploration geologists and geophysicists in potentially unraveling natural resources from our sustainable Earth.

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Download or read book Paleontological Events written by Carlton Elliot Brett and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent renaissance in the field of "event" stratigraphy has promoted a much more thorough examination of the geologic record of particular fossil-bearing strata. This reference work compiles the findings of leading researchers on fossil beds, epiboles and global bioevents, mapping out a definitive temporal and regional classification of event horizons. Based primarily on research with Lower and Middle Paleozoic rocks of eastern North America, 'this volume significantly links these events to relatively short-term phenomena, including storms and climate-forcing cycles. An invaluable resource for specialists and students in the fields of paleontology, paleoecology, stratigraphy, and sedimentology, Paleontological Events helps to clarify the biological and taphonomic significance of these horizons.
