Book excerpt: Toledo began the 20th century as it had ended the 19th—with a rapid expansion in industrialization, urbanization, and immigration. The titans of industry who shaped Toledo's early history continued to expand their fortunes and were joined by others who took advantage of the city's potential. A new industry emerged from the bicycle factories and wagon works of the 19th century—the automobile industry. It would dominate Toledo's economy in the 20th century. In addition to Jeeps, scales, glass, spark plugs, and transmissions, Toledo was also known for its civic reforms, strong labor unions, and fine cultural institutions during the 20th century. While Toledo never became “The Future Great City of the World” that Jesup Scott envisioned or even the futuristic “Toledo Tomorrow” that Norman Bel Geddes imagined, by the end of the 20th century, it was a successful city with an interesting past and a hopeful future.

Book How to Tell Toledo from the Night Sky

Download or read book How to Tell Toledo from the Night Sky written by Lydia Netzer and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lydia Netzer, the award-winning author of Shine Shine Shine, weaves a mind-bending, heart-shattering love story that asks, "Can true love exist if it's been planned from birth?" Like a jewel shimmering in a Midwest skyline, the Toledo Institute of Astronomy is the nation's premier center of astronomical discovery and a beacon of scientific learning for astronomers far and wide. Here, dreamy cosmologist George Dermont mines the stars to prove the existence of God. Here, Irene Sparks, an unsentimental scientist, creates black holes in captivity. George and Irene are on a collision course with love, destiny and fate. They have everything in common: both are ambitious, both passionate about science, both lonely and yearning for connection. The air seems to hum when they're together. But George and Irene's attraction was not written in the stars. In fact their mothers, friends since childhood, raised them separately to become each other's soulmates. When that long-secret plan triggers unintended consequences, the two astronomers must discover the truth about their destinies, and unravel the mystery of what Toledo holds for them—together or, perhaps, apart. Lydia Netzer combines a gift for character and big-hearted storytelling, with a sure hand for science and a vision of a city transformed by its unique celestial position, exploring the conflicts of fate and determinism, and asking how much of life is under our control and what is pre-ordained in the heavens in her novel How to Tell Toledo from the Night Sky.

Book Toledo Cathedral

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tom Nickson
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2015-12-07
  • ISBN : 0271076615
  • Pages : 622 pages

Download or read book Toledo Cathedral written by Tom Nickson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Toledo is famous as a center of Arabic learning and as a home to sizable Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities. Yet its cathedral—one of the largest, richest, and best preserved in all of Europe—is little known outside Spain. In Toledo Cathedral, Tom Nickson provides the first in-depth analysis of the cathedral’s art and architecture. Focusing on the early thirteenth to the late fourteenth centuries, he examines over two hundred years of change and consolidation, tracing the growth of the cathedral in the city as well as the evolution of sacred places within the cathedral itself. He goes on to consider this substantial monument in terms of its location in Toledo, Spain’s most cosmopolitan city in the medieval period. Nickson also addresses the importance and symbolic significance of Toledo’s cathedral to the city and the art and architecture of the medieval Iberian Peninsula, showing how it fits in with broader narratives of change in the arts, culture, and ideology of the late medieval period in Spain and in Mediterranean Europe as a whole.

Book Toledo the Story of an Old Spanish Capital

Download or read book Toledo the Story of an Old Spanish Capital written by Hannah Lynch and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the town's earliest history knowledge is merely the wildest assumption, and we have no reason to believe any of the legends handed down to us by historians as tradition. For instance, that obscure if venerable voice, asserts, that when God made the sun he placed it over Toledo (previously made, of course) and planted the foot of Adam, first King, beneath it at that particular spot of the globe. This is at least a fine testimony of the Spaniard's lofty faith in the antiquity of Toledo.

Book The Eagle of Toledo

Download or read book The Eagle of Toledo written by Alasdair Fotheringham and published by Aurum Press Limited. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federico Martí n Bahamontes, the Eagle of Toledo, is rated by many as the greatest climber in cycling history. The first Spaniard to win the Tour de France and a six-time champion of the race’ s gruelling King of the Mountains classification, he became a national hero in a Spain struggling to rebuild after the devastation and atrocities of the Civil War. Indeed, his success owed much to the conflict. When the Nationalist rebellion of General Franco finally overran the democratically elected Republic in 1939, vast swathes of the country were left impoverished and desperate. On the verge of starvation, the young Bahamontes took to cycling as a means of running black market goods, before realising that sport offered a more lucrative future. An impressive amateur career followed, leading to his Tour debut in 1954, when he won the mountains competition on his first attempt. Success and a charismatic, but temperamental, racing style brought him fame at home and abroad – as well as controversy. Today, despite his appropriation by the Franco regime, he remains the godfather of Spanish cycling and a sporting eccentric of phenomenal will power. He is also one of the few living witnesses to cycling’ s golden age and – as Alasdair Fotheringham discovered when interviewing him for this compelling biography – he’ s more than ready to tell the tale.
