Book excerpt: The Battle of St. Fagans in May 1648 was a decisive event in Welsh history. It was the turning point of a rebellion that had begun as a mutiny of Parliamentarian troops in Pembroke and spread through south Wales into Glamorgan with the immediate aim of capturing the town of Cardiff. The stakes were sufficiently high that despite growing disorders in England, Oliver Cromwell, the second-in-command of the New Model Army, was dispatched to Wales to prevent the rebels from reaching Cardiff. The defeat of the Welsh rebels at St. Fagans was of critical importance. It broke the momentum of the rebellion, and it shattered the ambitions of many of its supporters for greater local autonomy. It led to the appointment of a new elite of government loyalists who were to maintain control of the region, and this in turn consolidated the authority of London central government in Wales that was to endure for 350 years. These events have traditionally been seen merely in the context of the struggle between king and parliament in the civil war of 1642-46, the Welsh rebels of 1648 being cast as Royalists aiming to restore the defeated Charles I. Recent research has led, however, to a reinterpretation of these events, showing the rebellion to have embodied a complex mix of motives in which mutineer Parliamentarian soldiers believed themselves still true to Parliamentarian ideals and Glamorgan gentry sought greater local autonomy.Taking account of the most up-to-date research, The Battle of St. Fagans, 1648: Rebellion in Wales provides an account and explanation of the circumstances out of which these dramatic events developed, and a reconstruction of the largest battle ever to take place in Wales.

Book John Poyer the Civil Wars in Pembrokeshire and the British Revolutions

Download or read book John Poyer the Civil Wars in Pembrokeshire and the British Revolutions written by Lloyd Bowen and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length treatment of the ‘turncoat’ John Poyer, the man who initiated the Second Civil War through his rebellion in south Wales in 1648. The volume charts Poyer’s rise from a humble glover in Pembroke to become parliament’s most significant supporter in Wales during the First Civil War (1642–6), and argues that he was a more complex and significant individual than most commentators have realised. Poyer’s involvement in the poisonous factional politics of the post-war period (1646–8) is examined, and newly discovered material demonstrates how his career offers fresh insights into the relationship between national and local politics in the 1640s, the use of print and publicity by provincial interest groups, and the importance of local factionalism in understanding the course of the civil war in south Wales. The volume also offers a substantial analysis of Poyer’s posthumous reputation after his execution by firing squad in April 1649.
