Book When Lola Visits

Download or read book When Lola Visits written by Michelle Sterling and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four starred reviews! In an evocative picture book brimming with the scents, tastes, and traditions that define a young girl’s summer with her grandmother, debut author Michelle Sterling and illustrator Aaron Asis come together to celebrate the gentle bonds of familial love that span oceans and generations. For one young girl, summer is the season of no school, of days spent at the pool, and of picking golden limes off the trees. But summer doesn’t start until her lola—her grandmother from the Philippines—comes for her annual visit. Summer is special. For her lola fills the house with the aroma of mango jam, funny stories of baking mishaps, and her quiet sweet singing in Tagalog. And in turn, her granddaughter brings Lola to the beach, to view fireworks at the park, and to catch fish at their lake. When Lola visits, the whole family gathers to cook and eat and share in their happiness of another season spent together. Yet as summer transitions to fall, her lola must return home—but not without a surprise for her granddaughter to preserve their special summer a bit longer. * BookPage Best Books of the Year * The New York Public Library's Best Books of the Year * Kirkus Best Books of the Year * An ALSC Notable Children's Book of the Year * A CCBC Choices Pick of the Year * Banks Street Best Children's Books of the Year *

Book Genealogy For The First Time

Download or read book Genealogy For The First Time written by Laura Best and published by Chapelle. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Want to learn more about your ancestors, but not sure how to begin? This book will show you how to research and preserve your heritage. It's not only an enjoyable process, but also a great way to provide your family with a history they'll cherish through the generations. Start by looking at some simple information that's already available to you. Involve your parents, siblings, and children in this early stage. Don't overlook anything, including Christmas lists, address books, and even needlepoint samplers. After exhausting the personal knowledge you have within your home and among your immediate family, begin your research in other places. If you need a to know a maiden name, check the census or a newspaper. From organizing and matching families to accessing myriad records over the Internet, a computer is a tremendous tool at your disposal. Church, tax, and land records are invaluable resources, as are wills and even passenger lists kept by the U.S. Customs Service. All the advice you need to investigate further is explained here. Find out how to organize, record, and store the information you discover using a variety of simple methods. Genealogists present ancestral relationships and dates on a Pedigree Chart, commonly referred to as a family tree. Maps will help you visualize the geographic location and living conditions experienced by your ancestors, while a Historical Time-Line Chart puts family events into context with what happened in the nation in the same year. Create a loose-leaf binder that functions as a working notebook that you can carry with you to oral interviews, the library, the cemetery, and other places where you conduct research. How valid are the sources you uncover? Keep in mind what you already know about your family. If you're not familiar with the place where an event happened, look further into the history, geography, and culture of the area. Bonus; Unique uses of genealogy findings.

Book excerpt: Sterling Township, located about 18 miles northeast of Detroit, was first settled after the Erie Canal was opened. The rich soil, relatively flat land, and the vital Clinton River attracted pioneer and immigrant families who arrived to establish farmsteads. The first influx of immigrants came mainly from the British Isles, and by the 1870s, German families had flocked to the area, raising dairy cattle and establishing farms. Belgians, arriving in the early 1900s, developed truck farminggrowing fruits and vegetables to sell every week at the farmers market in Detroit. Farm culture prevailed until the 1950s, when large industrial plants began moving in, bringing with them workers and a need for housing and city services. Sterling Township became the city of Sterling Heights in 1968, and this collection of photographs will showcase the families and the way of life in the early days of this community, a historic community that is now the fourth largest city in Michigan.
