Book excerpt: Konduru was first published in 1971. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This is a detailed anthropological description and analysis of life in Konduru, a village in the central part of southern India about one hundred miles south of Hyderabad. The study is based on field work done by Professor Hiebert over a period of several years when he lived in the village, spoke its language, Telugu, and became closely acquainted with the people and their culture. After sketching the geographic and historical setting of the village, Professor Hiebert describes and discusses the social structure, including the societal categories, the various castes, the social groups including family, patrilineage, associations, and communities, and hamlets, villages, and towns in the region. There are chapters on status and power, networks of interpersonal relationships, panchayats (the system of justice), and rituals. Finally, the author discusses changes which are taking place in the society and culture of Konduru and presents his conclusions. He points out that this study of Konduru illustrates the importance of the village within the social order but at the same time demonstrates that the village cannot be understood apart from the other social groups in which its members are involved and interrelated, and that these relationships are neither static nor simple. But, as he concludes, the village is, for the individual, the concrete expression of his society. The book is illustrated with photographs, maps, and drawings. E. Adamson Hoebel, Regents' professor of anthropology at the University of Minnesota, writes a foreword.

Book Welfare and Wisdom

    Book Details:
  • Author : John S. Morgan
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press

Download or read book Welfare and Wisdom written by John S. Morgan and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1966-12-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when terms like "The Great Society" and "War against Poverty" are commonly used to indicate growing public awareness of welfare as a concern of national and international policy, and when the advantages of welfare are being questioned and debated in many areas of the community, this fundamental examination of the meaning and nature of welfare is a significant contribution. It represents the ideas of four world-famous scholars, each of them from a different cultural tradition and a different academic discipline; these scholars were carefully chosen by the School of Social Work, University of Toronto, to present a series of lectures marking the fiftieth anniversary of the School, and the result is a well-integrated, provocative, and authoritative statement on this social institution which accounts for the consumption of more than one-tenth of the national income of all modern industrialized societies. The theme of all their remarks is the wisdom of welfare: each contributor speaks in the light of his own academic and cultural experience, and each re-defines welfare in terms of twentieth-century knowledge, making significant proposals for the further exploration of the underlying ideas in his topic. In his introductory Commentary Professor Morgan considers the ideas which have particular relevance for Canada as touchstones for the future welfare of this country. All the contributors agree that welfare as an expression of human aspirations and as a legitimate expectation of organized society deserve a significant proportion of society's human and material resources. This is a book which will merit careful reading by all those concerned with this most critical area of social behaviour. Social scientists and social workers will find it stimulating. Fundraisers and contributors alike will benefit greatly from the thoughtful statements presented here.

Book Two Faces of Protest

Download or read book Two Faces of Protest written by Amrita Basu and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-10-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on case studies of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in West Bengal and Shramik Sangathana in Maharashtra, this ground-breaking new work examines Indian women's political activism. Investigating institutional change at the state level and protest at the village level, Amrita Basu traces the paths of two kinds of political activism among these women. With insights gleaned from extensive interviews with activists, government officials, and ordinary men and women, she finds that militancy has been fueled by pronounced sexual and class cleavages combined with potentially rancorous ethnic division. Thorough in its fieldwork, incisive in its political analysis, Two Faces of Protest offers a richly textured and sensitive view of women's political activism in the Third World.
