Book If the Universe Is Teeming with Aliens WHERE IS EVERYBODY

Download or read book If the Universe Is Teeming with Aliens WHERE IS EVERYBODY written by Stephen Webb and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the fact that there are perhaps 400 billion stars in our Galaxy alone, and perhaps 400 billion galaxies in the Universe, it stands to reason that somewhere out there, in the 14-billion-year-old cosmos, there is or once was a civilization at least as advanced as our own. The sheer enormity of the numbers almost demands that we accept the truth of this hypothesis. Why, then, have we encountered no evidence, no messages, no artifacts of these extraterrestrials? In this second, significantly revised and expanded edition of his widely popular book, Webb discusses in detail the (for now!) 75 most cogent and intriguing solutions to Fermi's famous paradox: If the numbers strongly point to the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations, why have we found no evidence of them? Reviews from the first edition: "Amidst the plethora of books that treat the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence, this one by Webb ... is outstanding. ... Each solution is presented in a very logical, interesting, thorough manner with accompanying explanations and notes that the intelligent layperson can understand. Webb digs into the issues ... by considering a very broad set of in-depth solutions that he addresses through an interesting and challenging mode of presentation that stretches the mind. ... An excellent book for anyone who has ever asked ‘Are we alone?’." (W. E. Howard III, Choice, March, 2003) "Fifty ideas are presented ... that reveal a clearly reasoned examination of what is known as ‘The Fermi Paradox’. ... For anyone who enjoys a good detective story, or using their thinking faculties and stretching the imagination to the limits ... ‘Where is everybody’ will be enormously informative and entertaining. ... Read this book, and whatever your views are about life elsewhere in the Universe, your appreciation for how special life is here on Earth will be enhanced! A worthy addition to any personal library." (Philip Bridle, BBC Radio, March, 2003) Since gaining a BSc in physics from the University of Bristol and a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Manchester, Stephen Webb has worked in a variety of universities in the UK. He is a regular contributor to the Yearbook of Astronomy series and has published an undergraduate textbook on distance determination in astronomy and cosmology as well as several popular science books. His interest in the Fermi paradox combines lifelong interests in both science and science fiction.

Book The Aliens Are Coming

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ben Miller
  • Publisher : The Experiment
  • Release : 2016-11-01
  • ISBN : 1615193669
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book The Aliens Are Coming written by Ben Miller and published by The Experiment. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The actor and author “celebrates the human fascination with the search for extraterrestrial life and grounds it with equally fascinating science” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). For millennia, we have looked up at the stars and wondered whether we are alone in the universe, but in the last few years—as our probes begin to escape the solar system, and our telescopes reveal thousands of Earthlike planets—scientists have taken huge leaps toward an answer. “Forget science fiction,” author Ben Miller writes. “We are living through one of the most extraordinary revolutions in the history of science: the emergent belief of a generation of physicists, biologists, and chemists that we are not alone.” The Aliens Are Coming! is a refreshingly clear, hugely entertaining guide to the search for alien life. Miller looks everywhere for insight, from the Big Bang’s sea of energy that somehow became living matter, to the equations that tell us Earth is not so rare, to the clues bacteria hold to how life started. And he makes the case that our growing understanding of life itself will help us predict whether it exists elsewhere, what it might look like, and when we might find it. “An eclectic and entertaining story, weaving together space exploration, the evolution of life on Earth, the Drake Equation and Egyptian hieroglyphs. That’s nontrivial, as we say in physics, but Ben Miller manages it!” —Brian Cox, author of Why Does E=mc2? “Whether it’s an objective look at UFO encounters, detailing the challenges of contacting aliens or explaining how life on Earth can inform our search, his snappy, conversational style will keep you turning the pages.” —Discover

Book Invasive and Introduced Plants and Animals

Download or read book Invasive and Introduced Plants and Animals written by Ian D. Rotherham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been many well-publicized cases of invasive species of plants and animals, often introduced unintentionally but sometimes on purpose, causing widespread ecological havoc. Examples of such alien invasions include pernicious weeds such as Japanese knotweed, an introduced garden ornamental which can grow through concrete, the water hyacinth which has choked tropical waterways, and many introduced animals which have out-competed and displaced local fauna. This book addresses the broader context of invasive and exotic species, in terms of the perceived threats and environmental concerns which surround alien species and ecological invasions. As a result of unprecedented scales of environmental change, combined with rapid globalisation, the mixing of cultures and diversity, and fears over biosecurity and bioterrorism, the known impacts of particular invasions have been catastrophic. However, as several chapters show, reactions to some exotic species, and the justifications for interventions in certain situations, including biological control by introduced natural enemies, rest uncomfortably with social reactions to ethnic cleansing and persecution perpetrated across the globe. The role of democracy in deciding and determining environmental policy is another emerging issue. In an increasingly multicultural society this raises huge questions of ethics and choice. At the same time, in order to redress major ecological losses, the science of reintroduction of native species has also come to the fore, and is widely accepted by many in nature conservation. However, with questions of where and when, and with what species or even species analogues, reintroductions are acceptable, the topic is hotly debated. Again, it is shown that many decisions are based on values and perceptions rather than objective science. Including a wide range of case studies from around the world, his book raises critical issues to stimulate a much wider debate.

Book The Frequency of Aliens

Download or read book The Frequency of Aliens written by Gene Doucette and published by Gene Doucette. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annie Collins is back! Becoming an overnight celebrity at age sixteen should have been a lot more fun. Yes, there were times when it was extremely cool, but when the newness of it all wore off, Annie Collins was left with a permanent security detail and the kind of constant scrutiny that makes the college experience especially awkward. Not helping matters: she’s the only kid in school with her own pet spaceship. She would love it if things found some kind of normal, but as long as she has control of the most lethal—and only—interstellar vehicle in existence, that isn’t going to happen. Worse, things appear to be going in the other direction. Instead of everyone getting used to the idea of the ship, the complaints are getting louder. Public opinion is turning, and the demands that Annie turn over the ship are becoming more frequent. It doesn’t help that everyone seems to think Annie is giving them nightmares. Nightmares aren’t the only weird things going on lately. A government telescope in California has been abandoned, and nobody seems to know why. The man called on to investigate—Edgar Somerville—has become the go-to guy whenever there’s something odd going on, which has been pretty common lately. So far, nothing has panned out: no aliens or zombies or anything else that might be deemed legitimately peculiar… but now may be different, and not just because Ed can’t find an easy explanation. This isn’t the only telescope where people have gone missing, and the clues left behind lead back to Annie. It all adds up to a new threat that the world may just need saving from, requiring the help of all the Sorrow Falls survivors. The question is: are they saving the world with Annie Collins, or are they saving it from her? The Frequency of Aliens is the exciting sequel to The Spaceship Next Door.

This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American Mythology began long before the European settlers arrived on North American soil. Contrary to popular beliefs, there is more to Native American Folklore than stories of buffalo hunts, teepee living and animal stories. Hundreds of tribes throughout North American created a huge mythological system that has rivaled that of the Greeks. Many of these tales have been lost, or are often hard to find. This collection represents a history that should be remembered. As a Native American myself, I embrace these stories. Native Americans tribes offer such a rich heritage. They have recorded a huge amount of their history through storytelling. In these stories you will relive their history and the lives of North America’s First People. The stories in this book have been handed down from generation to generation. And in such tradition, they are now handed down to you, to share with the next generation. Included in this anthology, are a group of collected works from the well-known, to the often-forgotten tribes. The tales included within this book, feature some of the most familiar and popular recorded… Gods, Aliens and all things Paranormal. Among the stories included in this book are: The Star Feathers, The Nûñnë'hï And Other Spirit Folk, The Ghost Woman, The Gods and the Six Regions, Wíshakon and His Friend Visit the Plėthoak (Thunderers), The Raven Mocker, The Giants from the West, The Young Woman and Thunder, Tsuwe'nähï: A Legend of Pilot Knob, When the Storm God Rides, Qalagánguasê, Who Passed to the Land of Ghosts, The Deserted Village, The Boy from the Bottom of the Sea, Who Frightened the People of the House to Death, The Water Cannibals, Átahsaia, the Cannibal Demon, The Twelve Stars, The Man Who Married the Thunder's Sister, The Maiden Who Loved a Star, The Man Who Became a Star, Tsul'kälû, the Slant-eyed Giant, The Woman with the Iron Tail, The Evil Water Spirits, The Great Leech of Tlanusi'yï, A Man Chased by the Ancient of Lizards, The Origin of Death, The Giant Cloud-Swallower, Kumagdlak and the Living Arrows, The Stick That Sang, The Tsundige'wï, The Ice Man, The Thunder Spirits, The Walking Stone, and many more.
