Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Souvenir History of Lincoln County, Kansas This book has been compiled from the written and verbal accounts of those who ought to know the history of Lincoln County. Personally I knew nothing of this history when I began gathering the material, and when stories conflicted I was not prejudiced to either opinion but tried in all possible ways to ascertain the actual facts In the case. I have interviewed most of the early settlers and those to whom I am most indebted are: J. J. Peate, Richard Clark, and Chalmer Smith of Beverly; John S. Strange, N. B. Rees, Anna C. Wait, Fred Erhardt, Adolph Roenigk, E. M. Harris, Martin Hendrickson, Daniel Day, Cris. Bernhardt, C. M. Heaton, Tone Bishop, Ogden Green, Myron Green of Lincoln; William Baird of Vesper; Mrs. Morgan and A. R. Buzick of Sylvan Grove. Those from a distance who have contributed letters and articles are: F. A. Schemerhorn, Eli Ziegler, and A. T. Biggs. Others have been kind enough to loan clippings. Among these clippings were articles by J. R. Mead, J. J. Peate, Thomas Strange, Washington Smith, Gen. Geo. A. Forsyth, also several important articles by unknown parties. Besides getting the statements of these people I have read the tiles of at least one newspaper from '73 down to date and searched the archives of the State Historical Society diligently and gleaned all I could from that source. A special vote of thanks is due the newspapers and others who have loaned cuts and pictures. I wish to make special mention of those who have advertised in this book. They are the fellows who are up-to-date and progressive or they wouldn't be here. And it is the man who is public spirited, liberal, and broad minded with whom you want to deal, not simply because he will do the best for the community but because he will do the best by you. As you read this book just notice who these men are. I have done my best to give a true account of the happenings of Lincoln County. I know there will be some mistakes, and I do not anticipate that everybody will agree with even that part of my story which is correct. If you do not agree with me do not ask me to change it now. If there is anything left out which you think ought to have been put in you should have spoken of it last summer. In case this book meets with your approval I shall be happy. In case it does not I refuse to worry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of Leavenworth County Kansas Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Leavenworth County Kansas Classic Reprint written by Jesse A. Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Leavenworth County, Kansas History is but a record of the happenings of human events, the per sonal element ever being present, and the history of a community or county is merely a record of those Who have contributed to its upbuild ing and advancement. Each step in the development 'of the above men tioned institutions; each incident caonnected with the passing of the original inhabitants of the territory of which our country is now com posed as well. As the coming of the pioneers - our forefathers - is history today. Centered about every pioneer family; about the rude log cabin, long since deserted and fallen to decay; about the old landmarks that live now only in our memory; about the farms, and about the grave marked by some weather worn piece, there is a story worth the telling; a story that would interest someone. Unfortunately the authors' have been compelled to eliminate much that they would like to tell owing to want of space. Having finished our undertaking of writing a history of Leavenworth County, though not to our satisfaction, we look back upon our labor as one of love and pleasure. While the task has been a tedious one, yet we feel a bit of satisfaction in our belief that we have written a story of our county in Leavenworth County language; that it is not so much written as spoken and in a way that we feel the average citizen can read and understand. We claim for this work no literary merit, neither dowe claim absolute correctness. Errors have doubless occurred by rea son of transcribing, typesetting and proof reading. Again much of this history as it is written herein has been handed down by word of mouth, and realizing as we do the frailty of human memory, we have attempted to arrive at the truth as best we could. Thoughout this work we have tried to tell the story of Leavenworth County and its people simply and plainly with the hope that we might be able to present a substantially authentic history of our county and its people to which the present and future generations may refer with con fidence and satisfaction as the years come and go, that it may be a per manent record for all time, and incidentally to inspire, by the sweep of the story, a love for our county and our cities and an intelligent solicitude for their destiny. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Cowley County, Kansas During the first half of the pres ent century this land was in the remote centre of the Great American Desert of our old geographies. This desert was no myth, but a reality. There was no timber, except narrow strips skirting the principal streams, kept narrowed by the annual fire which swept the plains, whose rolling, ridgy surface was only sparsely covered by the mesquit, a small buffalo grass, which fed the millions of buffalo, which traversed the country in their annual migrations. Here, the coyote, the wolf, the deer, the antelope, the wild turkey, the beaver and the otter were at home, and the trapper of the plains and mountains sometimes visited it for game. It was the hunting grounds of the Osages, Cherokees and many wild tribes of In dians, who annually fired the short buffalo grass, and the general fires swept over the whole country. Download or read book Our Heroes in Our Defense Labette County Kansas Classic Reprint written by W. H. Lightfoot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Heroes in Our Defense, Labette County, Kansas When we search the record of our state and nation, and compare Labette County's record we are proud of our boys, our women folk, our children and our men - Labette County has never been found wanting. In presenting this book to the people of the country the publishers have attempted in some small measure to bring before them in compact form, an all too brief story of their own community, coupled with illustrations and a pictorial history of some of our patriots who have pledged their all their very lives that Liberty may live and Right may Triumph. Within the covers of this book we have attempted to set forth what Labette County and her people typify. (personal details and records of individual acts of patriotism is lacking because of the removal from this locality of many who partici pated in the world struggle.) If we have succeeded the success is due not to us, not to the typographer who prepared this book, but to the mothers and fathers who raised these sons, for the highest and greatest service to Humanity and to their individual efforts in backing them at home.
