Book A Source Book of Ancient History

Download or read book A Source Book of Ancient History written by George Willis Botsford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Source-Book of Ancient History This volume may be used in connection with any course in Ancient History. It is especially intended, however, to serve as an auxiliary to Botsford's "History of the Ancient World." The material has accordingly been arranged in chapters parallel to those of this text-book, to which references are constantly given. Some of the selections have been translated by friends - especially by Dr. E. G. Sihler of New York University and Miss Rachel R. Hiller - and others by ourselves; but most of them have been taken from published translations, to which credit is duly given. Particularly in the case of excerpts from translations by scholars of recognized merit, we have followed the policy of making the least possible revision, even to the extent of allowing some inconsistencies in the spelling of proper names. Readers will thus be reminded that the spelling of Greek names is far from being standardized. As to the use of the volume, we advise that the pupils read each chapter in connection with their study of the corresponding chapter of the text-book. The questions, which suggest the more important facts to be gathered from the selections, are to be regarded merely as examples. The teacher may modify or expand them according to the needs of the class. In the case of the more mature pupils, greater attention should be given to a study of the authors and to the critical appreciation of the selections than these illustrative questions indicate. Download or read book Source Book in Ancient Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Charles M. Bakewell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Source Book in Ancient Philosophy While most of these sources are already accessible in translation they are. Scattered through so many volumes, and are mixed with so much material that is chiefly of value to the advanced student whose historical interests have become highly specialized, as to be practically unavailable for use in connection with introductory courses. My obligations to others are so numerous that it would be impossible to mention them all. In making the translations I have in each case had before me all of the translations already in the field, whether in English, German, French, or Latin, upon which I could lay my hands; and I have borrowed freely from most of them. In especial, however, I should like to acknowledge my indebtedness to Professors Diels, Burnet, and Fairbanks; and in the selection of passages I have taken many suggestions from the works of Ritter and Preller, Wallace, Jackson, and Adam. Book Ancient History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ancient History Classic Reprint written by Hutton Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient History This Ancient History needs, I trust, no extended introduction. In its preparation due regard has been paid to the recommendations of the Committee of Seven and the Committee of Five, to the requirements of the College Entrance Examination Board, and to the opinions of prae ticed teachers in various parts of the country. The pedagogi appa ratus supplied may be used in a variety of ways. It is sufficient here to point out that the references preceding each chapter have been chosen with a view to their use by the pupil as subjects for reports and essays, that the studies following each chapter are based On the text and are intended to furnish material for stimulating discussions in the class room, and that the maps and illustrations form an integral part of the text for purposes of study and recitation. It has seemed wise, from both an educational and a historical standpoint, to treat the geography of the Mediterranean world as a unit (chapter iv), and to set forth in two final chapters, similarly unified, the private antiquities and art of the classical peoples. Teachers who prefer the traditional order may easily separate the sections dealing with Greece from those dealing with Rome, and treat them separately. Book The History of the Ancient World From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome

Download or read book The History of the Ancient World From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome written by Susan Wise Bauer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2007-03-17 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively and engaging narrative history showing the common threads in the cultures that gave birth to our own. This is the first volume in a bold series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. Dozens of maps provide a clear geography of great events, while timelines give the reader an ongoing sense of the passage of years and cultural interconnection. This old-fashioned narrative history employs the methods of “history from beneath”—literature, epic traditions, private letters and accounts—to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled. The result is an engrossing tapestry of human behavior from which we may draw conclusions about the direction of world events and the causes behind them.

Book A Source Book for Ancient Church History

Download or read book A Source Book for Ancient Church History written by Joseph Cullen Ayer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Source Book for Ancient Church History: From the Apostolic Age to the Close of the Conciliar Period The value of the source-book has long been recognized in the teaching of general history. In ecclesiastical history quite as much use can be made of the same aid in instruction. It is hoped that the present book may supply a want increasingly felt by teachers employing modern methods in teaching ecclesiastical history. It has grown out of classroom work, and is addressed primarily to those who are teaching and studying the history of the Christian Church in universities and seminaries. But it is hoped that it may serve the constantly increasing number interested in the early history of Christianity. In the arrangement of the selected illustrative material, a chronological analysis and grouping of topics has been followed, according to the lines of treatment employed by K. Muller, F. Loofs, Von Schubert in his edition of Moeller's text-book, and by Hergenrother to some extent. The whole history of ancient Christianity has accordingly been divided into comparatively brief periods and subdivided into chapters and sections. These divisions are connected and introduced by brief analyses and characterizations, with some indications of additional source material available in English. A bibliography originally prepared for each chapter and section has been omitted. When the practical question arose of either reducing the amount of source material to admit a bibliography, or of making the book too expensive for general use by students, the main purpose of the book determined the only way of avoiding two unsatisfactory solutions of the problem, and the bibliography has been omitted. In this there may be less loss than at first appears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of the Ancient Egyptians Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Ancient Egyptians Classic Reprint written by James Henry Breasted and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Ancient Egyptians As works on the early Orient multiply, it becomes more and more easy to produce such books at second and third hand, which are thus separated by a long remove from the original monuments forming our primary sources of knowledge. As the use of this vol ume is in a measure conditioned by the method which produced it, may the author state that it is based di rectly and immediately upon the monuments, and in most cases upon the original monuments, rather than upon any published edition of the same? For this pur pose the historical monuments still standing in Egypt, or installed in the museums of Europe (the latter in to to), were copied or collated by the author anew ad hoc and rendered into English (see infra, p. 445, B. Trans lations, bar). Upon this complete version the present volume rests. Those students who desire to consult the sources upon which any given fact is based, are re ferred to this English corpus. A full bibliography of each original monument, if desired, will also be found there, and hence no references to such technical bibliog raphy will be found herein, thus freeing the reader from a mass of workshop debris, to which, however, he can easily refer, if he desires it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Ancient World The usefulness of this book will depend largely on the teacher, and hence one or two suggestions rising out of the purpose and method of the author may not be amiss. I. The grand divisions into which the book falls are those determined by the course of historical progress. Each one of these divisions is introduced by a Prelim inary Survey of the ground to be covered in the period. It seems theoretically desirable and pedagogically useful to give the pupil beforehand a bird's-eye view of the chief stations along the pathway which he is later to travel step by step. But it is suggested that the teacher take up this Survey with the pupil, read and expound it to him, rather than assign it as a task to be learned Without the previous preparation that explanation by the teacher would give. Book The Story of Rome as Greeks and Romans Tell It

Download or read book The Story of Rome as Greeks and Romans Tell It written by George Willis Botsford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Rome as Greeks and Romans Tell It: An Elementary Source-Book The object of this volume is to supply pupils in Roman history with interesting and instructive reading from the sources. This purpose has determined not only the selec tion of the material, but also the method of presentation. Although the book contains some descriptions of institu tions, it is largely narrative and biographical; preference has been given to those passages which illustrate life and character, ori which help the reader to an appreciation of general literature. To make the subject-matter intelligible as well as attractive to young readers, the quotations have been so connected and interwoven as to form a continuous story, and the difficulties have been explained in notes and references. These features will doubtless commend the book to many who, having passed the age of the pupil, are still interested in the literature and the life of ancient Rome. As a basis for the text, English translations, so far as they are available, have been used with the consent of the publishers. These translations, however, have been freely altered, with a view chiefly to the simplification of the style; at the same time care has been taken to reproduce faithfully the meaning of the authors represented.
