Book The Circle of the Snake

Download or read book The Circle of the Snake written by Grafton Tanner and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shocked by 9/11, the Great Recession, digital anxiety, and ecological collapse, the West suffers from nostalgia. People everywhere yearn for a utopian version of the past that never existed. Desperate for relief, many long to escape from the present. Some will stop at nothing to achieve it. In his essential new book, Grafton Tanner, author of Babbling Corpse: Vaporwave and the Commodification of Ghosts, argues that our nostalgia today is partly a consequence of the attention economy. At a time when historical literacy is crucial, and old prejudices are percolating into the present, Big Tech’s predictive algorithms are locking us into nostalgic feedback loops. The result is a precarious society with its gaze fixed on the good old days. Spanning from the ancient Sophists to Black Mirror, The Circle of the Snake is at once a reckoning with the myth of digital utopia and an incisive analysis of nostalgia as a weapon to spread fascism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of global capitalism, vaporwave celebrates and undermines the electronic ghosts haunting the nostalgia industry. Ours is a time of ghosts in machines, killing meaning and exposing the gaps inherent in the electronic media that pervade our lives. Vaporwave is an infant musical micro-genre that foregrounds the horror of electronic media's ability to appear - as media theorist Jeffrey Sconce terms it - "haunted." Experimental musicians such as INTERNET CLUB and MACINTOSH PLUS manipulate Muzak and commercial music to undermine the commodification of nostalgia in the age of global capitalism while accentuating the uncanny properties of electronic music production. Babbling Corpse reveals vaporwave's many intersections with politics, media theory, and our present fascination with uncanny, co(s)mic horror. The book is aimed at those interested in global capitalism's effect on art, musical raids on mainstream "indie" and popular music, and anyone intrigued by the changing relationship between art and commerce.

Just looking at this distinct animal raises many scientific questions. With regard to evolution, how did such an animal come to be? How does a snake move, and how do its sense organs differ from that of other reptiles? How does it eat, and how does it reproduce? Essentially, how does a snake "work"? Book excerpt: Longlisted for the 2022 National Book Award A Washington Post, Chicago Review of Books, Kirkus, and Christian Science Monitor Best Book of the Month “Inventive, funny and moving.” —The New York Times Book Review Translated from the German by Damion Searls Winner of the German Book Prize, Saša Stanišic’s inventive and surprising novel asks: what makes us who we are? In August, 1992, a boy and his mother flee the war in Yugoslavia and arrive in Germany. Six months later, the boy’s father joins them, bringing a brown suitcase, insomnia, and a scar on his thigh. Saša Stanišic’s Where You Come From is a novel about this family, whose world is uprooted and remade by war: their history, their life before the conflict, and the years that followed their escape as they created a new life in a new country. Blending autofiction, fable, and choose-your-own-adventure, Where You Come From is set in a village where only thirteen people remain, in lost and made-up memories, in coincidences, in choices, and in a dragons’ den. Translated by Damion Searls, it’s a novel about homelands, both remembered and imagined, lost and found. A book that playfully twists form and genre with wit and heart to explore questions that lie inside all of us: about language and shame, about arrival and making it just in time, about luck and death, about what role our origins and memories play in our lives.

Book Snake Circle

Download or read book Snake Circle written by Roberta Sykes and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snake Circle is the final book of Roberta Sykes' Snake Dreaming trilogy. Snake Circle draws the remarkable Snake Dreaming trilogy to a close as we accompany Sykes on the final stage of her journey - this time to Harvard University. It is a vivid recounting of Sykes' experience as the first Australian Black to graduate with a doctorate, and of her growing confidence as she thrives in the new environment of Harvard. It also passionately tells of her relationships with those she loves, such as MumShirl and her children, and the ongoing run-ins she has with the bureaucracy and politicians along the way. A moving and exuberant conclusion to a story that began as a tale of brutalisation. WHAT THE CRITICS SAID ABOUT SNAKE CRADLE AND SNAKE DANCING: 'Snake Cradle and Snake Dancing are enough to suggest that Sykes' three-volume memoir may well become an Australian classic.' - Sun-Herald 'Once begun, readers should be made aware that Snake Dancing is the kind of book which tugs at you to read it quickly. Once read, it is sure to stay long with us.' - Canberra Times 'It is a testament to the writing as much as to her life that the reader becomes so immersed in the story of Roberta Sykes. It is a story every Australian should read.' - Anne Summers, The Age 'Roberta. that you not only survived but triumphed is an incredible tribute to you and the human spirit.' - David Suzuki 'Reading Roberta Sykes is to be engaged by a great tale and by an uncompromisingly fine writer.' - Janine Burke, The Age

Book Cane Creek Days

Download or read book Cane Creek Days written by Warren Gill and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cane Creek Days is the memoir of a boy growing up on a story-book farm near Petersburg, Tennessee, the kind of farming life that no longer exists. The story takes place among the fields and small towns and bridges and dusty roads through which winds the beautiful, life-sustaining stream called the Little Cane Creek. Times were tough for the author, his family, and his friends in this rural Middle Tennessee area, not far from Alabama. Hunting and fishing were more than sport – they provided an important part of living a rich life. Livestock and crops provided cash, but also put food on the table. Their knowledge of the soil, plants, and animals of the region helped these hard-working and intelligent folks stay alive and even thrive in an age of less extravagance and indulgence. Many of these old ways required to survive were common and necessary are in danger of being forgotten. So author Warren Gill shares about growing up in the 1950s and how rural life sustained his community. Gill hopes to preserve for modern readers the lessons he and his community learned and how they survived without the technological tools that modern farms use today. Many North Americans are showing an interest in returning to our agricultural roots, either as working farmers or as hobby farmers who want to keep alive the knowledge of traditional agriculture. Many of these people remember that their parents and grandparents lived hard, fulfilling lives, and they want to recapture and preserve that tradition. This memoir captures that experience from someone who’s lived it.
