Book excerpt: Teachers are being encouraged to use observational strategies for a variety of professional purposes in assessment and evaluation. Observation differs from just "looking" in that the personal experience of looking is transformed into a public event by the systematic recording of what is seen and by subsequent analysis and interpretation. Chapter 1 introduces techniques of observation and considers its advantages and disadvantages as a data gathering tool. Chapter 2 presents the two main methods of recording data, systematic recording and descriptive and narrative recording. The use of technological aids to recording is also reviewed. Chapter 3 discusses how to plan the management of observation procedures and the personal and ethical issues involved. The most commonly used methods of analyzing data are described in chapter 4, considering the processing of both quantitative and qualitative data. (Contains 12 figures and 27 references.) (SLD)

Each chapter focuses on a select teacher education class where the instructor implemented components of the Paul and Elder Model of Critical Thinking. Written from the instructor’s point of view, each chapter details how each instructor utilized components of the Paul and Elder Model to support students in the development of their critical thinking skills. Importantly, each instructor's use of the model varied and those variations are shared in detail. Chapter authors found that utilizing components of the Paul and Elder Model resulted in more consistent use of critical thinking skills by students within their teacher education classes. In this practice-based book, interested teachers will be challenged to think through the methods they currently use in their own classes and will be provided new ideas or strategies to try.

Book excerpt: This dissertation was designed to compare teachers' and administrators' perceptions of teachers' abilities to promote critical thinking skills and students' abilities to use critical thinking skills in reading and language arts instruction. Teachers' methods for teaching reading and language arts curricula were surveyed. Data from third grade teachers from various levels of performance on state-wide end of grade reading tests were collected and analyzed. Analysis of the data revealed students who engage in regular activities that promote the development of critical thinking skills performed higher on tasks that required higher-order thinking skills. Additionally, the study confirmed previous theories that emphasize educator expectations. When educator self-expectations of ability to promote critical thinking skills were higher, expectations of students' abilities to use critical thinking skills were also higher.
