Book A Sketch of the Physical Structure of Australia Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Sketch of the Physical Structure of Australia Classic Reprint written by Joseph Bette Jukes and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of the Physical Structure of Australia IT is now four years since the notes were written on which this little book is founded. I read an abstract of it at the meeting of the British Associa tion, at Southampton, in 1846; another abstract was read at the Geological Society, in November, 1847. In consequence, however, of its length, and of its being not entirely composed of original oh servations, it could not be published in extenso in the proceedings or transactions of either of those bodies. I have since frequently intended to publish it myself, in order that the labour I expended on its compilation might not be entirely thrown away; but have been too much occupied with the duties of the Geological Survey of Great Britain, to which I am now attached, to spare the necessary time for its completion. Buried for the most part in the heart of the Welsh mountains, I have been unable to do more now than take advantage of some rainy days this spring for revising my original rough notes. I mention these facts in some measure to excuse the incompleteness of many parts, and the hastily written style of all, and trust the reader will pardon me accordingly should his eye or his ear be offended. Book Dispelling The Darkness Voyage In The Malay Archipelago And The Discovery Of Evolution By Wallace And Darwin

Download or read book Dispelling The Darkness Voyage In The Malay Archipelago And The Discovery Of Evolution By Wallace And Darwin written by John Van Wyhe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-05-10 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The facts of variability, of the struggle for existence, of adaptation to conditions, were notorious enough; but none of us had suspected that the road to the heart of the species problem lay through them, until Darwin and Wallace dispelled the darkness.”T H Huxley (1887)Darwin is one of the most famous scientists in history. But he was not alone. Comparatively forgotten, Wallace independently discovered evolution by natural selection in Southeast Asia. This book is based on the most thorough research ever conducted on Wallace's voyage. Closely connected, but worlds apart, Darwin and Wallace's stories hold many surprises. Did Darwin really keep his theory a secret for twenty years? Did he plagiarise Wallace? Were their theories really the same? How did Wallace hit on the solution, and on which island? This book reveals for the first time the true story of Darwin, Wallace and the discovery that would change our understanding of life on Earth forever.
