Download or read book Return to Rome written by Francis J. Beckwith and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be evangelical? What does it mean to be Catholic? Can one consider oneself both simultaneously? Francis Beckwith has wrestled with these questions personally and professionally. He was baptized a Catholic, but his faith journey led him to Protestant evangelicalism. He became a philosophy professor at Baylor University and president of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS). And then, in 2007, after much prayer, counsel, and consideration, Beckwith decided to return to the Catholic church and step down as ETS president. This provocative book details Beckwith's journey, focusing on his internal dialogue between the Protestant theology he embraced for most of his adult life and Catholicism. He seeks to explain what prompted his decision and offers theological reflection on whether one can be evangelical and Catholic, affirming his belief that one can be both. EXCERPT It's difficult to explain why one moves from one Christian tradition to another. It is like trying to give an account to your friends why you chose to pursue for marriage this woman rather than that one, though both may have a variety of qualities that you found attractive. It seems to me then that any account of my return to the Catholic church, however authentic and compelling it is to me, will appear inadequate to anyone who is absolutely convinced that I was wrong. Conversely, my story will confirm in the minds of many devout Catholics that the supernatural power of the grace I received at baptism and confirmation as a youngster were instrumental in drawing me back to the Mother Church. Given these considerations, I confess that there is an awkwardness in sharing my journey as a published book, knowing that many fellow Christians will scrutinize and examine my reasons in ways that appear to some uncharitable and to others too charitable.

Book Catholicity and Heresy in the Early Church

Download or read book Catholicity and Heresy in the Early Church written by Dr Mark Edwards and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it has often been recognised that the development of Christian orthodoxy was stimulated by the speculations of those who are now called heretics, it is still widely assumed that their contribution was merely catalytic, that they called forth the exposition of what the main church already believed but had not yet been required to formulate. This book maintains that scholars have underrated the constructive role of these "heretical" speculations in the evolution of dogma, showing that salient elements in the doctrines of the fall, the Trinity and the union of God and man in Christ derive from teachings that were initially rejected by the main church. Mark Edwards also reveals how authors who epitomised orthodoxy in their own day sometimes favoured teachings which were later considered heterodox, and that their doctrines underwent radical revision before they became a fixed element of orthodoxy. The first half of the volume discusses the role of Gnostic theologians in the formation of catholic thought; the second half will offer an unfashionable view of the controversies which gave rise to the councils of Nicaea, Ephesus and Chalcedon . Many of the theories advanced here have not been broached elsewhere, and no synthesis on this scale had been attempted by other scholars. While this book proposes a revision in the scholarly perception of early Christendom, it also demonstrates the essential unity of the tradition.

Book Revelation and Inspiration

Download or read book Revelation and Inspiration written by James Orr and published by . This book was released on 1910 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is written under the conviction that revelation and inspiration, in connection with the Bible, can only be defended in conjunction with a more positive view of the structure of the Bible itself than is at present prevalent. The three things imply each other -- a positive view of the structure of the Bible, the recognition of a true supernatural revelation in its history, and a belief, in accordance with the teaching of Christ and His apostles, in the inspiration of the record. The evidence for each of these three things yields support to faith in the other two. The critical appreciation of the Bible is helped by the recognition of the revelation contained in it, and of the character of inspiration attaching to the book which is the vehicle of the revelation. The revelation sustains faith in inspiration, and vice versa. From the unity of the three aspects results the conception of a Holy Scripture. - Preface.
