Download or read book Critical Issues in Reproductive Health written by Andrzej Kulczycki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, leading academics and practitioners in the field of reproductive health address topics such as contraception, abortion, sexually transmitted infections, maternal and prenatal health, sexuality and reproductive rights by examining a number of critical issues in these areas. The authors describe new research, identify gaps and priorities in policy and practice, and illustrate innovative solutions. The book further addresses such current imperatives as understanding the social meanings of emergency contraception, measuring gender-based violence, improving reproductive health governance, strengthening health systems and services, and redressing institutional barriers. The book also assesses how reproductive health programs can be reconfigured to new challenges such as those posed by climate change, vulnerable youth in fragile states, and risks from new infertility treatments. Using a rich and varied set of cases, a broad public health and social science perspective, and novel methodological approaches, this book questions common assumptions, illustrates effective solutions and sets out research, policy, and programmatic agendas for the present and future. This is a comprehensive volume which provides a valuable resource to researchers, educators, practitioners, policymakers and students, as well as anyone studying or advocating for reproductive health.

Book excerpt: Development in Unity: A Compendium of Works of Daasebre Prof. (Emeritus) Oti Boateng, Volume1 is a compilation of research works, published articles, speeches, seminar presentations, addresses, and radio broadcasts written by the author over the past 40 years. In these articles, the author, a distinguished statistician, a university don, a UN commissioner, a Vice-Chancellor of the World Academy of Letters, and a traditional ruler, combines his rich scholarly background and his deep understanding of complex traditional, national and international issues in addressing some challenges that face humankind. The book is divided into nine sub-themes, namely, 1) Education, 2) Governance, 3) Statistics, 4) Population and Health, 5) Natural Disasters, 6) Oil and Gas, 7) Chieftaincy and Culture, 8) Religion, and 9) Economy. The theme of this book, Development in Unity, is derived from the mission of the Akwantukese Festival, which is, Development in Unity for the Welfare of the People. The Akwantukese Festival, was instituted in 1997 by the Omanhene, Chiefs, and People of New Juaben to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Daasebre Professor (Emeritus) Oti Boatengs enstoolment as Omanhene of New Juaben in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The Festival commemorates the migration of the Juabens and their allies from Asante to the Eastern Region of Ghana in the 1870s. The basic goal of Akwantukese is to promote the socio-economic progress of the people through education, traditions, and customs. It further serves as a tourist attraction for people all over the world. Akwantukese also reinforces the ancestral unity between the citizens of Asante and Jew Juaben for peaceful co-existence. The articles in this first volume have been carefully selected to emphasize these ideals thereby creating a gift for posterity. As you enjoy these collections look out for the next volume in the series which is scheduled to come out very soon.

This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development in Unity Volume Two represents an eclectic repertoire of over forty years exploits and profile of a renowned international scholar and an eminent cultural African leader, Daasebre Professor (Emeritus) Oti Boateng, to inspire a new generational philosophy of development. In this treatise, the author, a distinguished authority in statistics , a United Nations Commissioner, and recipient of several national and international awards, including recognition by the American Biographic Institute as one of the five hundred best thinkers of the twenty-first century, seeks to blend scholarship and culture as mutually inclusive prerequisites to underpin contemporary models in addressing pertinent development challenges. The book pioneers an alternative innovative root-based development model to harness the potential of indigenous institutions of governance in ensuring self-sustaining inclusive local economic development as a hedge against poverty, insurgency mobilization, migration, and radicalization in response to the demands of contemporary global development challenges. It elucidates the truth that development has manifold aspects, dealing with every aspect of human life, and addresses its intrinsic challenges from an eclectic and multidisciplinary perspective. In this respect, the book covers diverse areas ranging from entrepreneurial collaboration for sustainable micro progress, gender sensitive statistics to democratic governance through credible elections. Other areas include harmonization of tradition and modernity in the chieftaincy institution, integration of ECOWAS statistical systems, space science and satellite technology, oil and gas exploration, construction of poverty profiles, religion, and the cocoa industry. Every section of the book is filled with leadership lessons to inspire a new development approach and intellectual assertiveness. This very penetrating book fills an important knowledge gap between theory and experiential learning in the development process. It is a melting pot of lessons for all readers.

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Ghana written by David Owusu-Ansah and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghana, the former British colony of the Gold Coast, is historically known for being the first country to the south of the Sahara to attain political independence from colonial rule. It is known for its exports of cocoa and a variety of minerals, especially gold, and it is now an oil exporting country. But Ghana’s importance to the African continent is not only seen in its natural resources or its potential to expand its agricultural output. Rather the nation’s political history of nationalism, the history of military engagement in politics, record of economic depression and the ability to rise from the ashes of political and economic decay is the most unique character of the country. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Ghana covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 900 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Ghana.

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2 written by Robert Black and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.
