Book A Sideways Look at Time

Download or read book A Sideways Look at Time written by Jay Griffiths and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-03-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant and poetic exploration of the way that we experience time in our everyday lives. Why does time seem so short? How does women's time differ from men's? Why does time seem to move slowly in the countryside and quickly in cities? How do different cultures around the world see time? In A Sideways Look at Time, Jay Griffiths takes readers on an extraordinary tour of time as we have never seen it before. With this dazzling and defiant work, Griffiths introduces us to dimensions of time that are largely forgotten in our modern lives. She presents an infectious argument for other, more magical times, the diverse cycles of nature, of folktale or carnival, when time is unlimited and on our side. This is a book for those who suspect that there's more to time than clocks. Irresistible and provocative, A Sideways Look at Time could change the way we view time-forever.

Book Geotechnical Engineering of Dams 2nd Edition

Download or read book Geotechnical Engineering of Dams 2nd Edition written by Robin Fell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 1384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geotechnical Engineering of Dams, 2nd edition provides a comprehensive text on the geotechnical and geological aspects of the investigations for and the design and construction of new dams and the review and assessment of existing dams. The main emphasis of this work is on embankment dams, but much of the text, particularly those parts related to geology, can be used for concrete gravity and arch dams. All phases of investigation, design and construction are covered. Detailed descriptions are given from the initial site assessment and site investigation program through to the preliminary and detailed design phases and, ultimately, the construction phase. The assessment of existing dams, including the analysis of risks posed by those dams, is also discussed. This wholly revised and significantly expanded 2nd edition includes a lengthy new appendix on the assessment of the likelihood of failure of dams by internal erosion and piping. This valuable source on dam engineering incorporates the 200+ years of collective experience of the authors in the subject area. Design methods are presented in combination with their theoretical basis, to enable the reader to develop a proper understanding of the possibilities and limitations of a method. For its practical, well-founded approach, this work can serve as a useful guide for professional dam engineers and engineering geologists and as a textbook for university students.

Book Horizontal Gene Transfer Mediated Multidrug Resistance A Global Crisis 2nd Edition

Download or read book Horizontal Gene Transfer Mediated Multidrug Resistance A Global Crisis 2nd Edition written by Dongchang Sun and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, human life has been seriously threatened by bacterial infectious diseases. After the discovery of antibiotics, humanity thought it had won the fight against infectious bacteria. However, considering the rapid evolution of bacterial multidrug resistance and exhausted pipeline of antibiotics for fighting bacterial infectious diseases, we are approaching the ‘post-antibiotic’ era. Unlike eukaryote, bacteria are proficient in exchanging their genetic materials with others by means of horizontal gene transfer (HGT). As a vehicle for antibiotic resistance gene (ARG), plasmid is self-replicable and transferable in a wide range of host bacteria. Moreover, ways of HGT-mediated ARGs spreading are highly diverse among different species, implicating complex evolution routes for the development of multidrug resistance in bacteria. In recent years, multidrug resistance plasmids have been widely found in bacteria not only from clinical patients, but also from animals, birds and plants, as well as from natural environmental settings including soil and water – heralding that the ‘post-antibiotic’ era is much closer than we previously thought. The global crisis of multidrug resistance calls for a closer collaboration among people of different professions in different regions, countries and continents, which will help us recognize the current situation and eventually find effective and long-lasting solutions for fighting against infectious bacteria.

Book Tabletops Horizontal Interactive Displays

Download or read book Tabletops Horizontal Interactive Displays written by Christian Müller-Tomfelde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-16 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objects displayed on a table can take multiple forms. In meetings, it is still very often printed paper although its content was originally created on a computer. The content can also be a “table”, but now in the mathematical sense, showing, e. g. , the budget of a project. Then, we have a “table” on the table. Most often, the computer-generated contents are subject of frequent changes or dynamic in nature. It is a logical consequence to avoid the detour and the inherent media break by transforming the surface of the table into a display able to show media that are active and can be computer-generated and computer-controlled. At the same time, it is desirable to maintain the inherent features and affordances of working with the objects and the contents while sitting or standing around a table. Electronic Meeting Rooms On the basis of these and other elaborate considerations, we started to design in 1992/1993 an electronic meeting room in Darmstadt at GMD-IPSI (later Fraunhofer IPSI). The setup of our custom-built DOLPHIN-System consisted of a “traditional” large rectangular wooden table with four physically integrated workstation-like computers with at screens. This set-up was complemented by linking a large ver- cal pen-operated interactive display, at that time the rst LiveBoard outside of Xerox PARC (two of which I was able to get to Darmstadt after my stay at Xerox PARC in 1990).

Book Trading Systems 2nd Edition

Download or read book Trading Systems 2nd Edition written by Urban Jaekle and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely revised and updated second edition, with new AmiBroker codes and new complete portfolio tests Every day, there are traders who make a fortune. It may seem that it seldom happens, but it does – as William Eckhardt, Ed Seykota, Jim Simons, and many others remind us. You can join them by using systems to manage your trading. This book explains how you can build a winning trading system. It is an insight into what a trader should know and do in order to achieve success in the markets, and it will show you why you don't need to be a rocket scientist to become successful. It shows how to adapt existing codes to the current market conditions, how to build a portfolio, and how to know when the moment has come to stop one system and use another one. There are three main parts to Trading Systems. Part One is a short, practical guide to trading systems development and evaluation. It condenses the authors' years of experience into a number of practical tips. It also forms the theoretical basis for Part Two, in which readers will find a step-by-step development process for building a trading system, covering everything from writing initial code to walk-forward analysis and money management. Two examples are provided, including a new beginning of the month trading system that works on over 20 different stock indices worldwide – from the US, to Europe, to Asian indices. Part Three shows you how to build portfolios in two different ways. The first method is to combine a number of different trading systems, for a number of different markets, into an effective portfolio of systems. The second method is a new approach to system development: it provides step-by-step instructions to trade a portfolio of hundreds of stocks using a Bollinger Band trading strategy. A trader can never really say they were successful, but only that they survived to trade another day; the black swan is always just around the corner. Trading Systems will help you find your way through the uncharted waters of systematic trading and show you what it takes to be among those that survive.

Book The Art of Finding Springs 2nd Edition

Download or read book The Art of Finding Springs 2nd Edition written by Abbé Paramelle and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abbé Paramelle (1790-1875) published The Art of Finding Springs in 1856 as a how-to manual for finding groundwater. Paramelle began his field research into springs on a karst plateau in southwestern France. Between 1833 and 1854, upon request, Paramelle explored 40 of France's departments and found groundwater in 10,000 places based on his observational method, which used geology and geomorphology, at a time when these sciences were in their infancy. Paramelle's method was used until the 1970s to find groundwater in the French Department of Lot. Although the book was translated into German and Spanish in the mid-1800s, this is the first English translation. The translator has included detailed notes and an introduction providing extensive historical background about this largely unknown hydrogeologist.
