Download or read book A Shot in the Dark written by Martin Hawkins and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a "Soundtrack" CD! Before Elvis hit town, back before country music was synonymous with Nashville, a small group of intrepid entrepreneurs--local businessmen looking to make a buck and have some fun--were recording and selling all the local music they could find. From dance bands to gospel, from rhythm & blues to, yes, country music, these men inadvertently documented a wealth of local music as they struggled to run successful recording studios. Hawkins goes beyond the music to tell the stories of the behind-the-scenes folks responsible for turning Nashville into Music City U.S.A. From Jim Bulleit, who was there at the very beginnings of the music industry, to Bill Beasley, who took on the emerging Music Row 'establishment' and lost, Hawkins guides us through the careers of the folks who defined Nashville's music scene for an exciting, unpredictable decade and traces the rise and fall of local music labels like Bullet, World, Tennessee, Republic and Speed. Though the focus of the book is on the recording companies, studios, DJs and other music promoters, it also underlines the importance of some of the giants of Nashville music--like Francis Craig, who recorded an international hit by accident, Owen Bradley, who had a hand in many early labels, Del Wood, the surprise star of honky tonk piano, the fabulous blues singer Christine Kittrell, the underrated R&B bandleader Louis Brooks, the ubiquitous gospel promoter, Wally Fowler, the long-established Fairfield Four, and the king of the rude country song, Randy Hughes. This book builds off of and develops more fully the research Hawkins did for the critically acclaimed Bear Family Records box collections of Nashville recordings during this same time. Full of lush photographs, many being published here for the first time, and accompanied by a twenty-song CD highlighting the wide range of music being made in Nashville at the time, the book immerses readers in the sights, sounds, and stories of this vibrant and influential decade in Nashville music making. Co-published with the Country Music Foundation Press

Book excerpt: As an IT expert and hacker extraordinaire, Wren Nelson is no stranger to discovering all sorts of secrets online. He's a warrior...when he's behind his computer, that is. And awkward at best in social situations. His long hours with Blackbridge Security don't really provide many opportunities to go out and meet people. So what is he supposed to do when a wrong delivery--a questionably large box of bedroom toys--ends up in his hands instead of its intended target? Online stalking has always been his go-to to accumulate information on people, but only seeing Whitney through digital displays isn't enough. Approaching her doesn't seem like the best plan either. What he doesn't know is that this woman is possibly the only one in existence able to give him a run for his money.

Download or read book Killing Kennedy written by Craig Cabell and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read the Chilling Truth Behind the Assassination That Shocked the World. At 12.30hrs on Friday 22 November 1963, US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. He was the 35th President of the United States, the first Roman Catholic President, and the fourth President to be assassinated in less than one hundred years. The news of his death shocked the world, and everybody seems to remember with great clarity where they were and what they were doing the moment the tragic news was broadcast.Craig Cabell's book reveals the sniper gauntlet that lay in wait for President Kennedy in Dallas that fateful day. His ballistic analysis of the famous Zapruder film, along with other photographs, film clips, eye-witness and medical accounts, proves that the assassination shot came from in front of the motorcade and not behind it, proving that a conspiracy really happened and that Lee Harvey Oswald was not guilty of assassination. He then explains how the killer escaped and looks at three other sniper dens that all fit the same scenario perfectly, sharing the same escape route for the other members of the sniper gauntlet, thus constructing a concrete explanation as to why the true gunmen were never found.Oswald described himself as the patsy in the assassination of President Kennedy and this book vindicates that claim, proving him innocent of assassination, but still embroiled in the conspiracy at the Texas School Book Depository.Avoiding conjecture, Cabell crafts a factual book about one of the most famous days in history, at last placing Oswald in his rightful context and exposing the dark, salubrious, world of professional snipers. As a former Small Arms desk officer for the Ministry of Defence and author of 17 previous history books and biographies, Craig Cabell provides the final word to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Swan Moments is the story of the Kennedy assassination and the man who would have solved it. Nuclear physicist Frank Jackson had a top secret security clearance. He knew there had been a conspiracy, and he was going to name names, but on December 13, 1963, he died under mysterious circumstances at the age of forty-nine. His death paved the way for the magic bullet theory. This book explains the real reason that Chaim Richman and the Paines were introduced to Lee Harvey Oswald. It also reveals what really happened in Dealey Plaza, and it names the men who shot Kennedy. It features new information that explains how the assassination was financed. It was written to explain what happened to Frank Jackson and the measures taken to silence the author. It also includes shocking information about the events that led to the controversial removal of Frank Jackson as director of the Center for Naval Analyses in 1962. In 1963, many people in the government were aware of Frank Jackson. Among them were Richard Bissell, Fred Korth, Bobby Kennedy, John McCone, John Connally, and John McCloy. The intelligence community couldn’t stop this book from being published because it includes rare photos, rare documents, and unimpeachable information from well-placed sources. Highly detailed, it answers questions that most people would be afraid to ask about the death of our thirty-fifth president.
Download or read book Deadly Force written by Lawrence O'Donnell and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring a new preface and afterword by the author From the host of MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, the riveting story of a 1975 police shooting of an unarmed black man in Boston—one of the first to draw national headlines—and the dramatic investigation and court case that followed. On a rainy winter night, James Bowden, Jr. left his mother’s house in Roxbury after a visit. As he guided his Buick out of his parking spot, an unmarked police car suddenly blocked his path. Two undercover officers sprang out, running toward his car. Shots were fired, and Bowden slumped over the wheel. Moments later, he was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. The police argued that they had fired in self-defense, claiming that Bowden was an armed robbery suspect and that after they had ordered him to stop, he had fired a shot at one of them. And multiple internal investigations by the Boston Police Department exonerated the officers involved. But Patricia Bowden, James’s widow, knew better. “The truth will come out,” she said at her husband’s funeral. She sought a lawyer willing to take on the Boston Police Department and finally found one in Lawrence F. O’Donnell, the author’s father, a man whose past, unbeknownst to Patricia Bowden, made him the only man in town who could not refuse her case. O’Donnell embarked on a highly contentious three-year battle with the Boston Police Department to win justice for James Bowden. More timely now than ever, Deadly Force is a powerful indictment of police misconduct, a reminder of this issue’s long, tortured history and of how far we still have to go.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 300 years, settlement patterns, geography, and climate have greatly affected the ecology of the south Texas landscape. Drawing on a variety of interests and perspectives, the contributors to On the Border probe these evolving relationships in and around San Antonio, the country's ninth-largest city.Spanish, Mexican, and American settlers required open expanses of land for agriculture and ranching, displacing indigenous inhabitants. The high poverty traditionally felt by many residents, combined with San Antonio's environment, has contributed to the development of the city's unusually complex public health dilemmas. The national drive to preserve historic landmarks and landscapes has been complicated by the blight of homogenous urban sprawl. But no issue has been more contentious than that of water, particularly in a city entirely dependent on a single aquifer in a region of little rain. Managing these environmental concerns is the chief problem facing the city in the new century.

Download or read book Hearths of Darkness written by Tony Williams and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hearths of Darkness: The Family in the American Horror Film traces the origins of the 1970s family horror subgenre to certain aspects of American culture and classical Hollywood cinema. Far from being an ephemeral and short-lived genre, horror actually relates to many facets of American history from its beginnings to the present day. Individual chapters examine aspects of the genre, its roots in the Universal horror films of the 1930s, the Val Lewton RKO unit of the 1940s, and the crucial role of Alfred Hitchcock as the father of the modern American horror film. Subsequent chapters investigate the key works of the 1970s by directors such as Larry Cohen, George A. Romero, Brian De Palma, Wes Craven, and Tobe Hooper, revealing the distinctive nature of films such as Bone, It's Alive, God Told Me To, Carrie, The Exorcist, Exorcist 2, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as well as the contributions of such writers as Stephen King. Williams also studies the slasher films of the 1980s and 1990s, such as the Friday the 13th series, Halloween, the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Nightmare on Elm Street, exploring their failure to improve on the radical achievements of the films of the 1970s. After covering some post-1970s films, such as The Shining, the book concludes with a new postscript examining neglected films of the twentieth and early twenty-first century. Despite the overall decline in the American horror film, Williams determines that, far from being dead, the family horror film is still with us. Elements of family horror even appear in modern television series such as The Sopranos. This updated edition also includes a new introduction.
