Book Twelve Tone Tonality Second Edition

Download or read book Twelve Tone Tonality Second Edition written by George Perle and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-07-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenge, in twentieth-century music, to the normative status of triadic tonality is one of the most far-reaching and extreme revolutions that the history of music has known. In his classic work, Twelve-Tone Tonality, George Perle argues that the seemingly disparate styles of post-triadic music in fact share common structural elements. According to Perle, these elements collectively imply a new tonality as "natural" and coherent as the major-minor tonality that was the basis of a common musical language in the past. His book describes the foundational assumptions of this post-diatonic tonality and illustrates its compositional functions with numerous musical examples. The second edition of Twelve-Tone Tonality is enlarged by eleven new chapters. Some of these are "postscripts" to earlier chapters, clarifying, elucidating, and expanding upon concepts discussed in the original edition. Others discuss new developments in the theory and practice of twelve-tone tonality, including voice-leading implications of the system and dissonance treatment. Errors discovered in the original edition have been corrected. - Jacket flap.

Book Schoenberg s Serial Odyssey

Download or read book Schoenberg s Serial Odyssey written by Ethan Haimo and published by Oxford [Oxfordshire] : Clarendon Press ; Toronto : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schoenberg's twelve-tone method of composition has proved to be one of the most enduring and influential ideas in the history of music. Yet until now, little attention has been devoted to the evolution of his method and the refinement of his compositional technique. Drawing upon Schoenberg's papers, sketches, and manuscripts, as well as his scores, this book traces the development of his twelve-tone serial idea from its rudimentary beginnings in 1914 to the highly refined works of his mature period.

Book An Introduction to the Music of Milton Babbitt

Download or read book An Introduction to the Music of Milton Babbitt written by Andrew Mead and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this celebration of Milton Babbitt's art, Andrew Mead explores the development of a central figure in contemporary American music. As a teacher and writer, Babbitt has influenced two generations of students, including such notable musicians as Stephen Sondheim and Donald Martino. He has helped establish the study of music theory as a serious academic pursuit, and his articles on Schoenberg, Stravinsky, and the twelve-tone system constitute a seminal body of research. But Babbitt is first and last a composer, whose works are, in Mead's words, "truly music to be heard." With Mead as a guide, we discover the strong emotional and expressive charge of Babbitt's music that is inextricably entwined with its structure. Babbitt is a twelve-tone composer, unabashedly so, and it is precisely his profound understanding of Arnold Schoenberg's epochal insight that gives Babbitt's music its special quality. By examining the underlying principles of twelve-tone composition, Mead allows us to appreciate Babbitt's music on its own terms, as a richly varied yet unified body of work. In achieving this purpose, he provides an excellent introduction to twelve-tone music in general. Without relying on professional jargon, he lucidly and succinctly explains Babbitt's complexities. A catalog of compositions, a discography, and a bibliography complete a book that will interest performers, music theorists, and music historians, as well as other readers who are enthusiastic or curious about contemporary musical works. Book Serial Composition and Atonality

Download or read book Serial Composition and Atonality written by George Perle and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-04-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely recognized as the definitive work in its field ever since its original publication in 1962, Serial Composition and Atonality remains an unsurpassed introduction to the technical features of what is probably the most revolutionary body of work since the beginnings of polyphony. In the analysis of specific compositions there is first and last of all a concern with the musical surface—an attempt to trace connections and distinctions there before offering any deeper-level constructions, and to offer none where their effects are not obvious on more immediate levels of musical experience. In this sixth edition of the book, George Perle employs the new and more consistent terminology for the identification of transpositional levels of twelve-tone sets that he first proposed in Twelve-Tone Tonality (1977).

Book A History of Twentieth Century Music in a Theoretic Analytical Context

Download or read book A History of Twentieth Century Music in a Theoretic Analytical Context written by Elliott Antokoletz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Twentieth-Century Music in a Theoretic-Analytical Context is an integrated account of the genres and concepts of twentieth-century art music, organized topically according to aesthetic, stylistic, technical, and geographic categories, and set within the larger political, social, economic, and cultural framework. While the organization is topical, it is historical within that framework. Musical issues interwoven with political, cultural, and social conditions have had a significant impact on the course of twentieth-century musical tendencies and styles. The goal of this book is to provide a theoretic-analytical basis that will appeal to those instructors who want to incorporate into student learning an analysis of the musical works that have reflected cultural influences on the major musical phenomena of the twentieth century. Focusing on the wide variety of theoretical issues spawned by twentieth-century music, A History of Twentieth-Century Music in a Theoretic-Analytical Context reflects the theoretical/analytical essence of musical structure and design.

Book Schoenberg

Download or read book Schoenberg written by Malcolm MacDonald and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Directly or indirectly, Arnold Schoenberg had a greater impact on the music of the twentieth century than any other composer. He was a vigorous polemicist whose theories were driven by his compositional practice, and although his music was for many decades more talked about than listened to, Schoenberg's influence has been incalculable" "In this completely rewritten and much enlarged updating of his long-indispensable study, Malcolm MacDonald takes advantage of thirty years of recent scholarship, new biographical information, and deeper understanding of the composer's aims and significance to produce a richly argued and thought-provoking guide to Schoenberg's life and work. He demonstrates how Schoenberg's musical language (including the much misunderstood twelve-note method), his personal character, and his creative ideas are indissolubly linked, as is his genius as a teacher and as an original composer. He also examines virtually every work in the oeuvre to demonstrate its vitality and many-sidedness. A chronology of Schoenberg's life, a work-list, an updated bibliography, and a much-expanded personalia enhance the usefulness of this new edition."--BOOK JACKET.
