Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxford Movement Inevitably that Kingdom has a fight for life. The spirit of the age, the wisdom of this world, and the secular Kingdoms founded by men; all these make war on it. The history of the Church includes that of the efforts of her enemies, from age to age, to crush her, to detach men from her, or to subject her to their control, at the expense of her principles, her laws and her faith. But we must now restrict our view to the branch of the Church from which we sprang. It is a wonder that it exists. Storms have beaten on it incessantly they are raging against it still. The history of the Church in Great Britain is that of perpetual strife against de grading and destructive influences; to read it is like looking at a ship in very heavy seas, now lifted up into full view, now plunged into the trough of the waves; sometimes lost to sight, so that the heart stands still, thinking that she may have foundered and will never reappear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxford Movement: Being a Selection From Tracts for the Times IT will not be counted against me, I hope, as presumption, if, before proceeding to a short account of an ecclesiastical revolu tion, I make personal confession of such indifference to the matters in dispute as Gulliver may have had to the question of high and low heels, which excited to Civic strife the rival factions of Tramecksan and Slamecksan. No one who questions the validity of all religious dogmas can taste the excitement of taking sides in the collisions of contending dogmatists; he must needs remain as little a partisan as the average person who studies the Wars of the Roses, and finds small cause to sympathise with either York or Lancaster. Yet indifference to the subject-matter of the controversy does not imply lack of appreciation of its extreme interest, both by reason of the great personalities engaged, and of its influence on the Church to which they belonged, and which some of them forsook. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxford Movement: Twelve Years The following pages relate to that stage in the Church revival of this century which is familiarly known as the Oxford Movement, or, to use its nickname, the Tractarian Movement. Various side influences and conditions affected it at its beginning and in its course; but the impelling and governing force was, throughout the years with which these pages are concerned, at Oxford. It was naturally and justly asso ciated with Oxford, from which it received some of its most marked characteristics. Oxford men started it and guided it. At Oxford were raised its first hopes, and Oxford was the scene of its first suc cesses. At Oxford were its deep disappointments, and its apparently fatal defeat. And it won and lost, as a champion of English theology and religion, a man of genius, whose name is among the illustrious names of his age, a name which will always be connected with modern Oxford, and is likely to be long remembered wherever the English language is studied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latest Phase of the Oxford Movement The present condition of that party is the subject of this slight sketch. Those who listen to me will, I am sure, be indulgent, for they will see that the difficulties that face anyone venturesome enough to attempt even an outline of the latest phase of the Oxford Movement are by no means slight. It is quite true that I feel more at home in dealing with the High Church Party than with, say, the Primitive Methodists: that is only what may be expected in the case of one who was an enthusiastic advanced Anglican of the pro Roman section for some years. It is also true that I have had good Opportunities for seeing High Anglicanism at work, for my duty as a peripatetic preacher for a Church Society took me into some hundred and twenty parishes (nearly 'all worked on lines more or less High) in every part of England except the north. I have debated the prospects of High Churchism with scores of Anglicans, cleric and lay, some Of my correspondents being in the United States, Australia, and South Africa. I used to read everything I could find that bore on the problem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind of the Oxford Movement But a political impetus does not create religious thought. It affords it opportunity, gives it point and purpose, establishes it as effective. The high Anglicanism of the Oxford Movement was not quite identical with the high Anglicanism which had existed for two hundred years and more. But the difference was not the result of the political crisis. The power of the Movement's religious ideas sprang from somewhere deeper in men's souls and minds than their contemporary ideas of ecclesiastical expediency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of the Oxford Movement Oriental Communions, but is especially noticeable amongst the multitudinous sects of Protestantism, in all those countries Where Protestantism prevails, of which Great Britain and the United States of America are, perhaps, the most conspicuous examples. Those among Protestants who are not sceptics, or, absolutely indifferent to all religion, seem (as Cardinal Newman described them) to be in a fog, and never quite certain of the ground on which they stand. They feel the want of unity and discipline, and deplore their own want of it; they admire what they see in this direction in the Catholic Church, but they appear to be unwilling to submit to her authority and embrace her teaching. One of the most striking features of present-day Anglicans (clergy as well as Iaity) is not only their desire for unity in their own communion, but their assumption that it already exists, a unity that can only be even nominally attained by a skilful avoidance of doctrinal points at their episcopal meetings. Book Audrey and John

Download or read book Audrey and John written by Author of Flowers and Fruit of Th Faith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Audrey and John: The Story of the Oxford Movement Uncle will, if you're not terribly busy, could I come and talk to you a bit P Father Leslie was taking a brief bit of leisure after a hard day's parish work. But he looked up with a smile at his young niece, laid down his paper, and prepared for conversation. Audrey slipped into the big arm-chair opposite her uncle. She made a pretty picture sitting there in the big, roomy chair, a Slim, graceful figure in a blue cotton frock, with long, brown-stockinged legs stretched out in front of her, the sun picking out ecks of gold in her hair. Well, Audrey, what's the matter P You look rather serious, said Father Leslie. I feel serious, answered Audrey. You see, this is what happened. The last week of term a Bishop came to talk to us about the Oxford Move ment. I don't see why that should affect your Spirits, answered her uncle. Oh, do listen, Uncle Will; I haven't got to the point yet. He was rather nice, quite youngish, and his speech was Simply topping. You know the sort: While it goes on you feel as if nothing else mattered, My word, Audrey, you're not often taken like that. What happened next P No, I know I'm not. Well, we do have rather a lot of stuffy old men who come and make Speeches, but this was quite different. This one seemed to think we were quite as important as grown-up people, and that we'd got something to do. He told us tons of things we didn't know. I'd never thought much about the history of the Church, except just the first beginnings of it in the Acts, which we did when I was in ivb. Then last term we had some awfully interesting Classes with Seymour, all about St. Columba coming over from Ireland to convert Scotland, and then St. Augustine coming from Rome, and all that. I know all that pretty well. Sey mour's so frightfully interesting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
