Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Irish People, Down to the Date of the Plantation of Ulster Having been asked by the widow of my lamented friend, Dr. A. G. Richey, to edit for publication a new Edition of his Lec tures on Irish History, I gladly accepted the task as a tribute to the memory of one who, as truly said in the Edinburgh Review for April, 1886, p. 437, saw his way through the complexities of Ancient and Modern Celtic life with a discernment almost intuitive in its appreciation of facts, while his scrupulous love of truth was only equalled by his pity for the long darkness of human misrule, which made him say, The study of Irish history teaches us sympathies with all That this description is true his writings show, but how true can only be known by those who have had, as I have had, long friendship and intimate association with him. Dr. Richey's Lectures were published in two volumes. The first, published in 1869, under the title of Lectures on the History of Ireland down to 1534, consisted of eight Lectures delivered to the pupils of the Alexandra College, Dublin, in 1869. The second, published in 1870, under the title of Lectures on the History of Ireland, from a.d. 1534 to the date of the Plantation of Ulster, consisted of ten Lectures delivered in Trinity College, Dublin, in Hilary Term, 1870, in continuation of the previous series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Plantation in Ulster at the Commencement of the Seventeenth Century, 1608-1620 Irish of Ulster could possibly have become exporters must have been the short interval between his appointment to the deputyship in 1604, and the actual commencement of the plantation in the autumn of 1610. Sir Oliver St. John, who was intimately acquainted with the capabilities of the Ulster Irish as farmers, recommended that the escheated lands should be let directly from the crown to the natives who had been in possession, and who, in turn, would have given the king large rents, ample revenues, indeed, to meet all his difficulties, transferring also to him that allegiance which had been previously rendered to their own Chieftains. See p. 69. The writer, in conclusion, hereby presents his sincere thanks to several literary friends for their kind and valuable suggestions during his preparation of this volume. He feels specially indebted to john P. Prendergast, Esq, whose forbearance with historical inquirers never grows weary, and whose thorough acquaintance with the manuscript materials of modern Irish history enables him, most efficiently, to alleviate the toil of workers in that rugged though attractive field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulster: A Brief Statement of Fact The dawn Of history in Ireland finds the whole people of Ireland with a common language, common ideals and traditions, common social and political institutions, and a common literature. In political and social organisation their constructive instinct was federal rather than feudal, and individuality and individual freedom were fostered. The Provincial Kings gave a nominal deference to a High King, who was one of themselves, and Kings and Chiefs were regarded, and regarded themselves, as trustees rather than as owners. Their privileges and rights appertained to their position, to which they were elected by the popular voice, and not to themselves per sonally. Allegiance was to the Clan, then to the Province, and finally the symbolic, rather than rigid, allegiance to the Nation in the person of the elected High King, but never to any individual. The whole feudal idea was abhorrent to the Irish mind, and when feudal organisation was sought to be thrust on the nation by the English, they fought it so long as they had the power to do so. And the federal instinct, although suppressed by law, still finds expression in the co-operative movement. Early Ireland was a wealthy country and a civilised country, rich in crops and in cattle and in manufactures, its fairs thronged with the merchants Of the Continent, its harbours thronged with their shipping, and its own ship ping thronging the harbours of the Continent. It was a country of great schools, where learning was taught free to strangers, where the lamp Of European culture was kept burning when it had flickered almost to extinction in Europe itself. Book The Mere Irish and the Colonisation of Ulster 1570 1641

Download or read book The Mere Irish and the Colonisation of Ulster 1570 1641 written by Gerard Farrell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the native Irish experience of conquest and colonisation in Ulster in the first decades of the seventeenth century. Central to this argument is that the Ulster plantation bears more comparisons to European expansion throughout the Atlantic than (as some historians have argued) the early-modern state’s consolidation of control over its peripheral territories. Farrell also demonstrates that plantation Ulster did not see any significant attempt to transform the Irish culturally or economically in these years, notwithstanding the rhetoric of a ‘civilising mission’. Challenging recent scholarship on the integrative aspects of plantation society, he argues that this emphasis obscures the antagonism which characterised relations between native and newcomer until the eve of the 1641 rising. This book is of interest not only to students of early-modern Ireland but is also a valuable contribution to the burgeoning field of Atlantic history and indeed colonial studies in general.
